New Super Luigi U |OT| I do it !

Slightly not but quite off-topic, but has anyone seen Newer Super Mario Bros Wii? I saw it on Dtoid, it's a NSMBWii fan mod, which should normally be words to strike fear into the hardiest of men but in this case has some fantastic additions to the original game and, despite having the same bland art style, is visually much more varied. There's even a new world map with switch palaces. I found a walkthrough of the first world here, apparently the game is available for free for anyone who has a modded Wii (which I don't) and the original game. From what I've watched, it puts Nintendo's laziness with the series to shame even while operating with the same toolset.

How is the difficulty in this? I only really would want it if it takes off where NSMBU ended and simply gets harder from there.

So, probably a dumb question, but is it worth the asking price?

If you're a fan of NSMB style of play, probably. It's basically just way harder NSMBU with flashier stuff going on

Significantly more difficult. I'd say it's closer to DKCR levels of difficulty than any NSMB

Good thing I've played the mod before, had I learned about it through your post I would probably have disregarded it.

Quite difficult, but the levels are much shorter - you get a 100 second timer per level- so trial and error does not feel that bad, as you'll only have to replay 30-45sec chunks of levels at worst.

Wow, some of the hidden exits are hidden in damn clever places. It'll be fun finding the rest of them sprinkled throughout the game. Only gotten through a few levels in a few worlds so far just to test this out and I'm already excited for more. It definitely fits the bill of a more difficult variation of the original NSMBU. So if you liked that game and wanted some more, this DLC is absolutely worth the $20.

Hey, Microsoft! This'd be a great way to tackle pre-owned.

The more I play the grater this game gets. I love this DLC. It would be great to be able to change the timer once you beat it.

At first I would think the 100 second timer would detriment the experience, but no, it is actually built around that. Once you beat it I think you should be able to change it just to mess around in levels.

I have noticed that on at least the first stages there is a 1up early in the level.

Due to the short levels and timer, I do think when you die you should be given an option to quick-restart a level rather than go back to the worldmap.

That said, I was skeptical at first but got into it. I think the key is simple: if you're not interested in collecting all the star coins, this is going to be underwhelming. These quickfire stages are designed around figuring out how to even get some of the star coins and do it within the time limit. In fact, it could have been very cool if you were required to get all three in a single run in order for it to count.

How is Nintendo advertising this game? Are they advertising it? They should, because it's a masterpiece.

I just finished world 6, and I think this is the most consistently exciting Mario game ever made. There are no down levels or plain stretches. Pretty quickly every level could be a special world level from recent Mario games. I mean that both in terms of creativity and difficulty. In fact, I'd say it's the most difficult Mario game since SMB3. What makes it great is that, timer aside, the level design really does beg you to go fast and make stylish jumps. With the coin paths to guide you, New Super Luigi might actually be an ideal vehicle for teaching people how to play Mario games well (lesson one: hold down the run button).

I can't get over how good this game is.

So pixel luigi is in every levels? I did only two levels (seeking for that damned secret exit) and found one in second level.
I found secret exit some minutes later, is that mechanic even in the main game?

Nintendo's digital pricing policy is terrible in nearly every other instance though. The prices of their digital prices in Europe often exceed retailer prices by something like 30%, it will cost £19 more to buy a digital version of Pikmin 3 (£50) on the eShop than it will on Amazon (£31). It's utterly ridiculous, especially in the UK. As another example, 3DS games retail online for around £27-£33 I've found. On the eShop, where there are no physical manufacturing costs, they cost £40. Bonkers.

So how do you force the game to update? I'm trying to give Nintendo my money and I cant get the damn game to update.

This is fun so far. Luigi's controls are a little loose but not too bad. 100 seconds disappears before you know it which really pushes you through the levels at a fast pace. I'm only in the second world but it seems like the star coins are a little easier to get, a lot of them are hard not to get. I wouldn't mind a more challenging Luigi version for 2D Mario games from now on.

Do we know how limited the box copy will really be? Like, if I wait until release and don't preorder, am I gonna be screwed?

You'll get it if you wait until release I'm sure. It'll be on shelves for at least a few weeks but then Nintendo probably won't ever send any more shipments so you'll be kicking yourself if you don't pick it up right when you see it on shelves.

I'm going to guess that it will be a standard one-time print for it, probably the same number of copies as the Metroid Prime Trilogy [maybe a bit more].

I don't think it will be as valuable as the MPT, though, considering it'll always be available as a digital download for those looking to purchase the game [Metroid Prime Trilogy wasn't], but even still, it will absolutely retain its worth [and then some] considering it will more than likely be considered "rare".

My advice? Pre-order now and pick it up at launch. You really have nothing to lose doing so, and you're guaranteed a copy this way [unless the store you pre-ordered at messes things up]. It won't drop in-price [ever], so there's no real reason to wait until later to purchase it [the lower price-tag helps things too].

I'll likely download the digital version soon [still debating] and purchase the retail version just as a collector's item.

The secret exit in
Acorn Plains 2

I can't believe I found that!

If I wasn't looking for a secret exit in that level, I think I would've missed it.

You can buy it now. It's been out in the US since around noon.

Make sure you're on version 1.3.0, not 1.2.0

when you start up the game it lists what version you're on in the bottom right of the screen

I'm on 1.2.0. How do I update exactly?

Mine didn't update automatically, but I closed the game, went to the shop, chose the Luigi game as if to purchase, and then had it tell me to update NSMBU first -- after which the update did in fact begin when I went back and restarted the game.

Enjoying it a ton so far. Short levels but its non-stop danger and precision jumping, very fun. Not getting the stars, but almost done with all the regular levels and I can see myself playing this more than the regular NSMBU.

Where's the reviews for this thing? Kinda want, but I can't tell if it's because I haven't bought anything for my Wii U that wasn't a 20-year-old VC game in months.

Totally expecting reviews to complain about same world map, assets reusing, and floaty controls.
I'm guessing its time-limit/difficulty, as well. To me, that's a positive [well, the difficulty anyway, I could do without the time-limit].

Either way, it's looking more likely that I'll be purchasing the digital as well as retail. It's only been a day, and I'm already feeling the need to play it. NOW.

You're not the only one. I haven't even beaten the original for the sake of playing it multiplayer with friends but am super interested in this.

Hey, Microsoft! This'd be a great way to tackle pre-owned.

This isn't a new idea.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
- Full length expansion
- Released as DLC which required main game Oct 26, 2010, $9.99
- Released a retail disc for $10 more which did not require main game Nov 26, 2010, $29.99 and included two other pieces of DLC

I wouldn't mention it, because I think what Nintendo is doing is good, but I feel like people built up this image in their head of DLC and digital distribution as being this monstrous scam, and Nintendo being the only one to approach it the right way, when in reality a whole lot of people in the industry have been practicing this and trying a whole lot of different things for a long time and it's worth considering which of those worked and didn't work instead of reinventing the wheel.

Shut up, please. I'm actively trying to not spend $20 here because I'm pre-broke thanks to new consoles. You're not making this easy.

This game is great. I've played the first 4 worlds and all of the levels are difficult and some are fiendishly so. Layer Cake Desert - Fort trolled me hard the first time I played it. I wish the timer was longer because these levels don't need it to be as difficult as they are.
