I'll tell you what.No.
FF hasn't had traditional turn based combat since FFX (over 20 years ago)
These days the combat changes a lot in each entry. This time around it looks like it's going to be very fast and action heavy

The combat director has worked in stuff like Dragon's Dogma and DMC.
Strategy RPG IS its own genre. If we go by your logic, There is no reason why "Action RPG" is its own genre that can only be separate from "JRPG", but "Turn based RPG" is not. A game like Dragon Quest has turn based combat. Tales of has Action based combat. Every other aspect of these games are almost identical, yet Dragon Quest is a "JRPG" ,Named after the place it originated from, and Tales of is an "Action RPG", named after the type of combat it used? Huh? Why isn't Dragon Quest's genre based on its gameplay component? Why is only one defined by its place of origins, despite both coming from the same place and both being RPGs?No, it's not. It's more like saying SRPG is it's own genre, just like JRPG is it's own genre. Both are sub-genres of the overall game type called RPG.
No it isn't. It's never been one of the essential traits of JRPGS. This is something that you yourself have entirely made up and that you now parade around as fact. JRPG games have had action combat since the 80's. Go to any JRPG fan community, be it forums, reddit or whatever, and start a thread saying that games like Tales of Series, Seiken Densetsu, Star Ocean or Ys are not JRPGS. You will be laughed out of there. Nobody agrees with you.Of course not. The stuff I listed are simply additional differentiating factors that can occur in JRPGs (to make it eaier to distinquish them from other genres), but being turn-based is definitely one of the essential ones.
Then they aren't differential factors that make a game a JRPG, then listing them is redundant. The new Pokemon games (Scarlet & Violet) have no separate battle screens anymore.I don't mean random encounters have to be present. They can. Like I said "some type of transition to a battle screen" (even if the screen is part of the background, like in Chrono Trigger) can be another feature in helping to differentiate between other genres. I should have made that more clear I guess.
And how is there no screen transfer to a battle screen in Pokemon games?
The conclusion that is posted above the diagram is frankly, absurd. An interesting (to me anyway) thread I ran across given some of the takes I've read. I'm old enough to recall when some FF fans were angry at FF7 for jumping away from medieval influences and it's funny watching it all come full circle.
Looks better than I hoped, but I'm still confused who the main charecter is. Like this is the first FF I feel hasn't leaned on a clear main character in the trailers.
This was SO dramatic. I had to roll my eyes like 3 times. Also, I'm honestly not a fan of people using something maybe one person said and running with it as an example. I'm pretty sure literally only one idiot who has never even seen footage of Skyrim compared it to XVI.![]()

It's a bit too grim and dark for my taste. I keep hoping that with the next trailer they will show me something to really like and make me want to buy the game. I'll still keep some tabs on the game but I got to say this is the first main line ff game since ps1 ff7 where I was like nope at the start. The change (?) in style and gameplay is more than welcome but I hope the game is not all that grim and dark all the time. It's not a Dark Souls afterall and even FF14 carefully alternates serious moments and scenarios with more lighten up ones!
But no doubts the story and characters will be one to remember for long. Ff14 doesn't ever fuck up
It probably is cross gen, they're just not announcing it yet to build up hype for the ps5 versionLooking at this, they should've just made this cross-gen like everything else. I struggle to see what in this wouldn't be possible on last gen machines.
My hype deflates with each new trailer they show, what a shame. At least I still have dragon quest to look forward to.
I think one of the issues (at least for me) is that none of the trailers so far have really shown us any of the characters outside of combat. It's mostly just combat footage with some characters saying random stuff in the background. They should show us a cutscene or two, with proper dialogue and character interactions.
Nor have they really shown any of the environments, and how exploration is gonna look. Usually trailers for rpgs like this feature shots of the character riding through beautiful landscapes, or walking through bustling cities etc. But all they've shown us of FF16 is combat. It's no wonder that some think this looks like a DMC game.
Dude, at least read what I'm writing. I specifically said that "JRPG" has become it's own term and does not simply mean "it's any type of RPG made in Japan".other aspect of these games are almost identical, yet Dragon Quest is a "JRPG" ,Named after the place it originated from, and Tales of is an "Action RPG", named after the type of combat it used? Huh?
I don't. Bein turn based (or having any type of passive combat style) is maybe the most essential trait of JRPGs. What else would it be? What would you name are - for example - the or even 2 essential traits of an JRPG? I'm curious. You confuse an aspect that is common in JRPG's as one of its essential defining traits
You're right: Ys and Seiken Densetsu are not JRPGs, they are ARPGs (or Action Adventures). Many of the Star Ocean and Tales of Series games could be considered JRPGs.Go to any JRPG fan community, be it forums, reddit or whatever, and start a thread saying that games like Tales of Series, Seiken Densetsu, Star Ocean or Ys are not JRPGS
You literally pass over 70% of the arguments I've laid forward, and you want to accuse me of not reading what you're writing? That's funny. I've addressed every single point that you've made, perhaps you've missed it in your attempts to cut out and ignore the vast majority of my arguments?Dude, at least read what I'm writing. I specifically said that "JRPG" has become it's own term and does not simply mean "it's any type of RPG made in Japan".
It is not an essential trait of JRPGS. It's never been an essential trait of JRPGs. Action RPGs like YS and Seiken densetsu have been considered JRPGS since they came out.I don't. So then, why don't you do exactly as the part you've quoted? Go ahead and go visit any JRPG community and start a poll. Oh right: Because we both know what will happen. Nobody agrees with your weird definitions. I can go to any JRPG community and find countless discussions and conversations about Tales of, Star Ocean, Ys or Seiken Densetsu. Exactly none of them: Zero, will contain a reply that says :"These are not JRPGs". I'd love to know why only some of the Star Ocean games or Tales games could be considered JRPGs. Which ones and why? You're right: Ys and Seiken Densetsu are not JRPGs, they are ARPGs (or Action Adventures). Many of the Star Ocean and Tales of Series games could be considered JRPGs.
These "people" are an embarrassment to mankind.Have you seen how men in Asia look like?

I agree for how much the Japanese developers seem to ponder to Western markets they as sure not listening when it comes to character design and story tropes.
These "people" are an embarrassment to mankind.
Now I see why nobody is making babies there anymore. These "people" are an embarrassment to mankind.
Dude, this is total bullshit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_of_Mana take a look. I don't know how long you have been playing games, but since decades SoM hasn't been called a JRPG.It is not an essential trait of JRPGS. It's never been an essential trait of JRPGs. Action RPGs like YS and Seiken densetsu have been considered JRPGS since they came out.
Again, total bullshit. By your logic, every game made in Japan that features character stats that define the capabilities of the characters are JRPGs. So Castlevania Symphony of the Night is a JRPG? The snes game EVO Search for Eden is a JRPG? Dungeon Sige is a JRPG? Monster Hunter is a JRPG? So almost every game made in Japan is a JRPG? This is absurd. The term "JRPG" can be interpreted in two different ways: You can either use it as an umbrella term for all RPGs coming out of Japan (Much in the same way that we use the term Western RPG) or you can use its as a term to describe an RPG from Japan that contains traits that can be found in, or originate from, Japanese (pop) culture. The "RPG" part is the same as every other definition of the term RPG: It means that the stats of the Player Character define the capabilities of the characters. These mechanics originate from table top RPG games. Hence, they are called RPGs.
He can't tell the difference between FF16 and fucking Skyrim!! Jesus I don't think I've heard anything more absurd.![]()

while i somewhat agree with all you say, i especially agree with this. we've seen so much more of massive castles/fortresses than we have of beautiful, colorful, majestic environments. it's this imbalance of too much overwrought melodrama & not enough breathtaking scenery that i, as a huge ffxiv fan, find pretty off-putting...Everything Final Fantasy XVI has shown so far is overly serious. From the dialogue, the dark themes, the way characters are presented, the increased focus on violence, the overly brown environments. Classic Final Fantasy has dealt with darker themes before, but it was always presented in a more nuanced/optimistic way than what was shown here. Take away the chocobos and the summons, and the game has nothing in common with the rest of the series. At least, based on the trailer.
Wow dude. What part of JRPG is not a genre do you not understand? it's not listed as JRPG under its genre because JRPG isn't a genre.Dude, this is total bullshit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_of_Mana take a look. I don't know how long you have been playing games, but since decades SoM hasn't been called a JRPG.
What even are these examples that you're citing? Monster Hunter doesn't have RPG statistics in its character development. Dungeon Siege isn't made in Japan.Again, total bullshit. By your logic, every game made in Japan that features character stats that define the capabilities of the characters are JRPGs. So Castlevania Symphony of the Night is a JRPG? The irony of this very post is legendary. You have no idea what the term "RPG" means. You claim Zelda has RPG mechanics. You claim Monster Hunter has RPG mechanics. Next time, don't come into a thread with this attitude.Seriously, anyone not understanding the very concept of "genre" and how these things originate is - sorry to say - a bit of a retard.
Especially on a hardcore enthusiast forum like GAF, not understanding these things is quite embarrassing.
Zone-basedIs it open world?
Is it open world?
I would say it's similar to Xenoblade 1-3, it not open world but each zone has huge open field. Is it open world?
I've only really played f7 remake extensively - like similar to that? The openness of ff15 appealed to me but I heard it wasn't goodI would say it's similar to Xenoblade 1-3, it not open world but each zone has huge open field.

I knew that voice sounded familiar. Also the same guy who is from the iron islands, eggs theon on in game of thrones then knocks him at winterfall.
FF7remake is linear so no, think Dragon Quest XI structure but with much bigger map.I've only really played f7 remake extensively - like similar to that? The openness of ff15 appealed to me but I heard it wasn't good
