New Trailer for FFXVI is up

I don't expect anything, it's just my reaction to the trailer, and as said it probably goes for the whole genre. Are there gritty JRPGs?
I don't think it looks like a PS3 game but for me there is a lack of grittiness here, on everything, it's the style, the skin, beard, hair, clothes and armour, ground, castles, ruins, everything just looks too tidy.

I think we are having a communication issue here. If they were clean 24/7, I would say you have a point. It would be very annoying if they are in the midst of battle and still looking perfectly clean and not at all disheveled - but the only time we see them clean is when they are in the safety of their walls and cities, far away from combat. In combat, they are covered in dirt, blood, grime, soot covers their clothes, their hair becomes disheveled, etc.

Heck, even the grounds look dirty and grimy in some scenes, when it is in more "public" and general purpose areas. As it should. The clean locates tend to be in the major castles, near the royalty.

I already made peace with the fact SE will no longer makes turn based for mainline FF, thats fine SE still makes other games that are turn based combat but If mainline FF going towards action combat then I want proper one.

And so far FFXVI's combat is looking good.
I'm still holding out hope for another FFIX moment, where they reset and go back to the basics.

Well to be fair, Joshua is 10 and Clive is a teenager there. They just look young

This is what Clive looks as an adult

Nothing about this says woman to me

First non ridiculous looking main dude in a FF since like FF8 and people are complaining?
We got through weird androgynous midget (Zidane), Meg Ryan (Tidus), shirtless Michael Jackson (Vaan) and an entire japanese boy band and people have an issue with this guy?

The trailer looks absolutely amazing but I haven't played a final fantasy game since the super Nintendo days, how do final fantasy games play?

Are they turn based still?

No.
FF hasn't had traditional turn based combat since FFX (over 20 years ago)

These days the combat changes a lot in each entry. This time around it looks like it's going to be very fast and action heavy

The combat director has worked in stuff like Dragon's Dogma and DMC.

That looks like devil may cry for sure, I love from software games. Do any final fantasy games play like them?

If so which one, also are there any gameplay videos of 16?

'Final Fantasy Origins: Stranger of Paradise' is the only FF games that remotely plays like a Fromsoft game and its a spinoff.

My reaction to this is nothing like the hype from others. I mean I will get it day 1, but it was just a bunch of story stuff that looks cool, but could suck as bad as FFX. Final Fantasy was special in the 90s, but I haven't been satisfied by one since FFIX. Please don't be an OK way to game and be engaged with the story for a couple dozen hours only to be ruined by excessive grinding near the end and/or a terrible and stupid resolution to the story.

is that Leviathan?

both Pheonix and Ifrit is not there which is probably for a reason? but for Ifrit it makesense that the second Eikon of fire is something that should not appear at first place.

both

Yeah it's Leviathan, It looks like Bahamuts wings but once zoomed in you can definitely see the Serpent!!! Ifrit and Phoenix are in the full screen image.

Just missing the element of light... I guess they're not including Carbuncle or Alexander???

Amazing trailer, September and October are bringing really good announcements.
Seems like everyone got tired of Sony's bullshit pussyfooting with their showcase and decided to do it themselves.

Anyway, the game looks so damn good and feels epic in scale with the different kingdoms.Feels like game of thrones in a final fantasy setting.I can't wait.

He looks like someone was working really hard to make an awesome character on the character creation screen in dark souls, then they got up to the part where you can add a tattoo or a scar, but as they were working out where to put it they thought "Screw this! I've been making this character for ages! I just wanna play now!"
Every time there's an FFXVI new trailer or whatever everyone is always saying "Ehhh not that impressed with the graphics" while I'm over here thinking it looks awesome...
Who the hell are you

I am a FF noob here but didn't they in the very first reveal trailer said this game will end the legacy of crystals. I thought people were pissed after FF13 that they dragged the crystal storyline too much. I was interested in playing from a new era/story arc of sorts.

Seiken Densetsu (Mana) and Kingdom Hearts are not JRPGs, yes, you got that right. Both are Action-Adventures like Zelda.
No they aren't. Both of these games are JRPGs with an action combat system. Zelda does not even have any rpg features to speak of, and they are not the same genre. You have come up with your own personal definition of genres that nobody else shares, mistaken those for facts and now you're arguing with people after finding out that everybody thinks your definitions are wrong.

Almost every FF involves crystals. The tagline "the crystals have (something something) for long enough" just refers to crystals being viewed as bad in XVI's world.

Lol sorry! It's been my PSN ID since 2008 at least?

if you like the turned based stuff, Bravely Default and Octopath would be their big series that have those type of FF concepts going on.

Semi OT, but I wonder if they'll do another World Of Final Fantasy. I thought that was a great jrpg.

Can't say I've been excited for a final fantasy since 10 and I didn't like it. 12 was OK and didn't bother with 13 and 15 was kinda ok-ish. Really feel like this will be the best, for me, since 9.

I think it looks awesome, i guess the only reason there is a slight drop in some of the graphics is because its cross gen with ps4 right?

At least it will be 60 FPS on ps5 etc.

Wrong. Both mentioned games are either ARPGs or Action-Adventures, but not JRPGs. And... of course Zelda has RPG features.

You do realize that a game being an Action RPG doesn't mean that it's not a JRPG, right? JRPG is at best an umbrella term. It is not a genre in itself. Zelda does not have RPG features. The reason why we call games RPGs in the first place is because they use similar originally founded in P&P RPGs. Zelda does not have these. It's not an RPG.

Looks better than I thought. wish it was coming to Xbox.
I'm sure it will eventually. FFXV came out on Xbox.

I want above all to gameplay, namely the exploration, towns, and dungeons. But I think the devs want to firmly establish the setting and major characters before showcasing the gameplay.

What kind of logic is that? An apple and an orange are both fruits, yes, but that doesn't mean an apple is an orange... So yes, if something is an ARPG it means it's not a JRPG. JRPG is its own genre. Just like Heavy Metal and K-pop; both are considered music, but Heavy Metal is still not K-pop.

Nope not cross-gen. FFVII Remake part 2 (FF7 Rebirth), also current gen only, along with Forespoken, Kingdom Hearts 4 and Dragon Quest 12.

I am guessing 4k 60fps won't be a problem for this title.

Whenever FF games try a new combat system, it takes usually 2-3 games to get it right, this thing looks fucking awful right now.

It's like you've got people that have never played games with combat in them trying to design a new for no reason combat system.

They need to stop trying to reinvent a wheel that they don't understand and end up adding edges to and just conform to a modern design that works.

From the brief glances this looks like Kingdom Hearts or something, they're intentionally not showing long combat clips for a reason.
You do know the combat director for this game worked with Devil May Cry 5 and Dragon's Dogma which were praised for their combat. Let's just chalk it up to preference because I would rather have something as thrilling as the combat shown here than menu based back and forth turn based combat. I like turn based combat but the traditional kind feels so outdated. If it turned into something like Divinity Original Sin 2, I would be all over.

This entire series has consantly changed and tried new things. This isn't new or surprising.

Yea, I explained that the combat systems that they introduce take time to mature, like the shit they put into that Lightning FF series wasn't good but at least was more matured by 15.

It's like if you read my comment you'd have half agreed.

JRPG is not its own genre. It's like saying Turn based RPG is its own genre, so a turn based RPG can't be a JRPG.

The qualification you have given for JRPGs, Which you've listed here:
Like I said, "turn-based" is one of the main differentiating features, not it's sole one. Being menu based (handing out commands instead of playing the character(s) themself(ves)), having random encounters, having its own battle screen or some type of visual pause between overwold and battles are others (and "turn-based" kinda implies that).
Are criteria that you've made up entirely on your own, which you now parade around as fact. Some of these examples are flat out ridiculous. Does Chrono Cross having its enemies visible instead of random battles mean it's now "less" of a JRPG? Are the new Pokemon games suddenly less JRPG because there's no screen transfer to a battle environment? Of course not. The requirement for a game to be turn based to be qualified as a JRPG something you've entirely come up with on your own. Considering the fact that you thought Zelda had RPG features, which it doesn't, suggests that you're not really in a position to redefine the genre either.

I do hope we have some sort of party system, though. I won't hate on it if it does not, but it will be somewhat of a bummer if it does not.

JRPG is not its own genre. It's like saying Turn based RPG is its own genre, so a turn based RPG can't be a JRPG.

No, it's not. It's more like saying SRPG is it's own genre, just like JRPG is it's own genre. Both are sub-genres of the overall game type called RPG.

Does Chrono Cross having its enemies visible instead of random battles mean it's now "less" of a JRPG? Are the new Pokemon games suddenly less JRPG because there's no screen transfer to a battle environment?

Of course not. The stuff I listed are simply additional differentiating factors that can occur in JRPGs (to make it eaier to distinquish them from other genres), but being turn-based is definitely one of the essential ones.
I don't mean random encounters have to be present. They can. Like I said "some type of transition to a battle screen" (even if the screen is part of the background, like in Chrono Trigger) can be another feature in helping to differentiate between other genres. I should have made that more clear I guess.
And how is there no screen transfer to a battle screen in Pokemon games?
