New 'X' trailer [Monolithsoft] shows uncut gameplay

This might just be a cutscene, though.
Seems more like gameplay to me, the first trailer didn't have any other cutscenes, and that part was spliced between two other obvious gameplay bits. I figured this would be a contextual scene though. Like the player is on one of the colony cannon's

After watching that gameplay, I no longer have any interest whatsoever. I had only watched the teaser reveal last (?) year, and had no idea that this was a Monster Hunter-clone.
I think if people want to label something as a Monster Hunter clone, they actually need to play Monster Hunter.

Heh, it's not even close to a Monster Hunter clone. It's a regular RPG. Instead of random fights you see the enemies on the map and can attack them at will. Just like FF XII.

You know what other game is a great Monster Hunter clone? New Super Mario Bros.
When you fight that Giant Bowser it's just a total Monster Hunter rip off.

-All the weapons and mechs feel very weak, especially when it comes to sound design.

This game does seem interesting, but it feels like the guys designing the game didn't really do (or haven't gotten around to doing) anything to make the player character and the party feel powerful and thereby make the opponents seem more threatening. For example, XCOM has some pretty meaty sound effects for the starter guns, so that when you start going up against tougher enemies and those guns start falling short, you feel like those bad guys are dangerous because they're tougher and harder to beat.

I quite agree with you here. Rewatching it now and man that Minigun sound...

Where did this even come from? Did anyone saying this stuff actual play Monster Hunter??

It comes from people that see giant monsters than think it's just Monster Hunter. People that obviously never played Xenoblade or Monster Hunter.

If X/Xenoblade are Monster Hunter clones, then so is every other RPG ever made, including the ones made before Monster Hunter. What am I even reading in this thread?

To be honest, while I loved Xenoblade, this doesn't impress me. I'm really hoping the monster hunter clone (In the sense that the characters are customizable and there's no real plot/story) posts are baseless but if they're true then I won't be getting this ever.

Of course they didn't. Monster Hunter is a slower paced methodical action game. This is a fast paced role playing game.

Yup, plus we're talking about a Takahashi game here.

I believe the biggest mistake they've made so far advertising this game off is not showing any of the story. The second biggest mistake they did was showing off anything online related before showing the story and base gameplay.

Did you not watch any of the trailers for this? This has nothing in common with Monster Hunter on any level.

This is the same format they did for Xenoblade. I honestly think everyone is overreacting over nothing.

Nintendo should have done a better job showing gameplay for the first time, make Bill Trinen introduce the world, the setting, mention the genre, past games of the creators and then introduce the mechanics on a 5:00 video. Not only it failed to increase the interest gathered by the first two teasers but it has led to some confusion and as usual game journalists dont brother to clarify the mechanics or simply just lazily decide to post some gifs and call it a day. And no "Play Xenoblade" doesnt cut it since some people probably didn't play it.

Fixed the bolded

Other than that, yeah I agree with your idea, Bill would be perfect for explaining he mechanics and introducing the world.

Everyone has been hyping this game to maximum levels, that's why the disappointment. Back when Xenoblade was being shown off like this, we had very little idea of how the game actually felt. We have some idea now for 'X' because it is based off of Xenoblade designs, but we don't really know much else besides the little snippets that have been shown.

Really, I'm just disappointed of the type of footage that they decided to show. maybe they haven't built enough of the story elements yet to show them off, and that's why we are getting battle system playtesting videos. This game may be really far off as well. I'm guessing it's a mid to late 2015 title at this point, unless they still think this game will fit somewhere at the end of 2014 release schedule (it was in the spring 2014 Direct after all).

I hope they decide to show off a bit more of this game at E3. Really need to see some story elements to help put everything into context.

And that same format was foolish there too; Nobody took interest in the game until the name change and the story/exploration videos got released. :\

Then when they release those trailers showcasing that down the road more people will be interested.

Overhype something so much there can be no other conclusion of disappointment due to being unable to meet unattainable expectations.

I'm sure most people comparing this to Monster Hunter don't mean in terms of the actual combat or flow of gameplay. Rather just that you might form parties of people online and kill monsters in a multiplayer fashion. There certainly was no online multiplayer monster-killin in Xenoblade.

Though when it's dismissed as a "monster hunter clone" those are some pretty ridiculous words sure.

Did you not watch any of the trailers for this? This has nothing in common with Monster Hunter on any level.

If it has customizable characters (based on the sprite icons from the trailer in the OP) then it already has something in common, and would also imply that the game will not be focusing much on story.

This is exactly what I mean.

I really wanted to like this but it's just a slightly reskinned Monster Hunter with the same exact mechanics and basically could be mistaken for a slighty enhanced port of Monster Hunter U.

Hopefully it's early on and the game finds an identity of its own and isn't a shameless clone.

I do wish they would show off some story cutscenes with characters talking/dialogue, etc. It would go a long way in clearing up the misconception as well as easing my mind personally. I just don't like how long it's taking to see some story.

We have no idea if there are customizable characters yet. It's been showing the same 4 or so characters since the reveal, so... I dunno.

Yeah but that doesn't do them any good now. If their intent is to build hype, they need to properly showcase the game. If they're not ready or willing to do that, then don't show it off in the first place.

I'm sure there's a justification for it. But it's probably a misguided one. Pairing this unedited footage up with a basic story trailer would have done wonders.

Footage was a tad dull, to be honest... but then again, I didn't play Xenoblade Chronicles, so I wasn't sure what I was looking at in the first place.

The enemies seem very spongy, and not particularly reactive. Seemed like the heroes just kept circling the enemies and spraying them with bullets. The enemies didn't really seem to notice, either.

Nice day-to-dusk transition, though, and the baboon-like monster design is cool.

Are people now purposefully trying to spread mis-information about this game? There is way to much of this crap going on.

Combat looks as shitty as Xenoblade's, and they kept the annoying constant chatter too. Too bad. :(

(lol @ the Monster Hunter comparisons though, WTF? That has to be the most absurd comparison I've heard...)

There is absolutely no reason to think these posts are true. There is nothing to support the guys saying "OMG this is just Monster Hunter with robots". They are pulling it out of their asses. Anyone saying that has never played Monster Hunter or Xenoblade.

Since there's no way this hits anything other than the WiiU they have to justify not getting the console somehow.

Considering the people behind it, I don't see how it can't be story focused.

Dunno if it was pointed out but in this new Gameplay in and after getting into his Mech his was the only one shown on the Minimap on the Rader. Wasn't really much doubt but regardless that's something pointing further to character owned mechs.

...Wouldn't it be important to show the position of all Mechs if the other party members were simply AI? Unless of course typical AI warping powers!

Hrm didn't pay attention before to notice that characters are using the same named Mech, twice.

Seriously. It'd be like if I came into a thread about The Witcher 3 and said this is just a Thief clone. It honestly makes as little sense as that.

IT'S NOT A MONSTER HUNTER CLONE. Good god. It's about as furthest away from Monster Hunter as you can get.

I'm not trying to be difficult, but what little I've seen of X, and what little I've played of Monster Hunter, I feel that they are very similar: you have a team of three or four, you fight large monsters that are damage sponges, and a bunch of numbers are popping up on-screen. Am I wrong?

I think the reason some are underwhelmed is that it's one area without a lot of color and it's a regular fight but I'm actually glad they showed gameplay like this.

The trailers were amazing but this gives you an example of the mechanics whether it's flashy or not.

Ha ha, I'm just gonna assume you are trolling, Poo.

Huh? You can still clearly see everyone's Mech as a green dot on the mini map.

Has there been any footage of something plot related? It's worrying at the very least.

That was basically all the second trailer was.

It's really annoying when people make drive by comments like this and thread gets derailed for a few pages.. but I guess that's to be expected when you have constant influx of new members.

Yes and no with that you can see where the party members are at, before any of them are inside mechs and after the dude gets out near the end you can only see 1 blue dot, the one supposedly belonging to the controlled character on screen.

Completely wrong. Monster Hunter is a methodical action game. It's about your skill with a weapon and how prepared you are. Slower paced, and the focus is on killing a target monster. There are some RPG elements in it, but itself is not an RPG. Monster Hunter doesn't have numbers or anything like that when you hit an enemy, either.

What you just saw in the X footage there, on the other hand, was simply a rare but otherwise normal encounter in a standard JRPG. With Mechs. A standard action bar that contains all your characters abilities. Not any different then the company's previous games, except this one is real time like Xenoblade was.

That was basically all the second trailer was.

The speculation that came out of that trailer was pretty awesome.

You are describing a whole lotta JRPGs, besides Monster Hunter doesn't even have numbers flasing on screen.
