New 'X' trailer [Monolithsoft] shows uncut gameplay

Did you forget this is by the guys who did Xenogears which is probably still their biggest game and they did the Xenosaga games too (and Xenoblade still had some mecha), ofcourse it was pretty likely they were going to want to bring back mechs, these guys are clearly hugely into scifi given their worlds and storylines. Xenogears was most definitely a "grand adventure" and had anime-style mechs.

I'm pretty sure Xenoblade outsold every other Xeno game combined.

So... why are they advancing elements from their less-successful venture? That's like Nintendo re-releasing TWW levels of crazy.

Holy shit! Hopefully we don't have to wait another eight months for more footage of this game.

I'm hoping for E3... that feels forever away. I realllllly hope we get a release date/name at E3... seriously, it's been a year now since it was revealed. It's time. I don't see the need in hiding the name unless they still aren't sure how to market it?

This thread is just a goldmine of ugh.

Here we go. The "Wii owners couldn't recognize good games" rationale. You are obscenely obnoxious, you know that?

I think that, you are tying too hard with the troll baits.

In your opinion to be fair because it's also possible and likely that people actually liked the game even if you didn't and it is deserving of high praise.

Had a DS, PSP, Wii, 360 and PS3 and thought it was one of the most entertaining games last gen.

Hahaha get the fuck out of here

I liked Xenoblade and I spent most of Gen 7 on handhelds, so I certainly wasn't starving for any JRPG I could get my hands on. Thanks for trying to tell me why I enjoyed one of my favorite games from last gen though.

this is so sad

Can't say I agree with you buddy, but you know, opinions and all that stuff.

Speak for yourself, man. I bought Xenoblade 3 times and enjoyed every minute of it. You didn't like it? Fine, don't make judgements about the people who do and why they like it.

It's very easy to notice who hasn't played Xenoblade.

Xenoblade was hailed by many, if not most, reviewers as the JRPG of the generation. Stop.

You guys.... you are responding to Kyon in a Nintendo thread.

All of you are insane, hahahaha.

How sure are you? IIRC, Xenogears sold close to a million worldwide. Has Xenoblade come close or exceeded that?

Last I checked, Gears by itself sold about a million units in Japan alone. Whereas Xenoblade opened at ~80k, and its last tracked number was ~145k (also in Japan).

I think it looks good, at the every least it's certainly not a game I would ignore! Can't wait to hear more information about it!

I do wonder if there will be a more "high stakes" storyline to this game, the toned down colors and the style of the music give me a more "mature" vibe! There were the tender violins and pianos in Xenoblade but the music in X so far seems to be more "intense." I loved the "setting off fireworks" feeling of Xenoblade's combat (do I launch them all at once and have to wait to do so again, or do I carefully select and set off the fireworks at the right times while the rest reload?), so I hope they make the feel of the combat in this game as satisfying as it was for me in Xenoblade. And I'm hoping that auras, gems and such end up being vital to combat strategy in some cases. I know there's the option of using Mechs but I imagine it can be a case of giving the player choice in how he or she likes to play (in other words, you don't have to use the mech if you want a challenge, just like how in Xenoblade it's up to the player to choose to make a challenge for himself by fighting higher level enemies rather than grinding all the time).

I will miss the treasure chests though :-p (I am seeing it right that they are replaced with a "battle spoils" pop-up window?) But sometimes it was annoying to see a gold treasure chest in Xenoblade fall down off a bridge into an abyss or something and not be able to get it. Of course there's also that city with cars and such in it but that wasn't touched on here, this was just some footage of how a battle might go, so I hope next time they show some of that city! Looking forward to this game.

People also think this is a hack and slash Monster Hunter clone... Just because some people aren't thinking straight doesn't mean that it isn't obvious.

Except in that case for anyone who has played Xenoblade can see the gameplay is like it, on the other hand if anyone has played Monster Hunter can definitely see it isn't like it at all.
There's people blurting out that it looks like a MMO, which I can also agree with as Xenoblade looked like a MMO too but it of course it was offline.

With the case of this latest trailer, what's so "pretty clear" of it that makes you say with certainty that it was single player with no doubt?

The fact that the AI basically stood around and followed the players moves and worked with him, far more than human players would.

Looks fucking awesome. I don't get the complaints about the combat at all... at least from people that actually played through Xenoblade. The combat system was very dynamic and constantly engaging. It starts out pretty simply with Shulk and Reyn but by the time you've got Melia it gets really inventive and impressive. The different ways you can customize the characters and which parties you put together is pretty awesome.

I wouldn't have put 200+ hours into the game if the battle system didn't have depth and wasn't fun to play with.

looks really good, combat is fast and seems as satisfying as Xenoblade's

now they just need to tell us it's a huge ass RPG because I'm slightly worried

I'm not sure how I feel about losing them. On the one hand, I did like the treasure chests because it was always fun seeing a silver or gold one pop up and wondering what was inside. On the other hand, I hated that little pause while the game loaded the contents, especially if you had several to open in a row. lol

Where the hell did you get that from? That's not even close to true. :/

Guys, can we, like, refrain from pulling shit out of our asses?

Lol, agreed.

Obviously it's cool if you dug Xenoblade way more than past entries, but no it did not sell more than the 4 previous ones.

It says volumes that they won't commit to 2014 for this game, even when they need retail releases so badly.

Looks good though. I loved Xenoblade and from this footage the games is basically Xenoblade 2.

Follow systems for players exist in other games and I expect if these are people like staff that they would be coordinated for something like footage they know would be shown to the public. I'll point out specifically that them all running to the mech at the same time was the most interesting part of that though but if these were to say character owned mechs (Like if you had no ability to teleport them) and they are main transportation method would it seem so strange for a re-enter Mech system after battle choice? As you probably wouldn't want to leave them miles behind.

The initial trailer with the chatlog had "party members" follow the PC like AI at the same time as well. I wouldn't like it but what if the online was drop in/out and people are forced to follow the host like AI outside battle?

I personally wouldn't call this being pretty clear at all.

Yeah, it's too bad...fingers crossed it's still 2014 though. I know Nintendo (at least, in part, right?) owns Monolith so I get why it's coming out on Wii U, but I can't help but feel the game isn't going to do well. The Xeno series has always been relatively niche...I'm shocked Xenogears did as well as it did, though I think some of its success can be attributed to Squaresoft's success at the time on PS1. The idea of a long, hardcore, mech-styled JRPG on the Wii U is fine with me (and clearly others on GAF), but it really can't be properly pushed as Nintendo's big megaton kind of game. Mario Kart, Smash, etc. sure, but X?

As an owner of both, I think the audience as well as install base would benefit the game being on something like PS4, but I digress...if I get the game, I'll be happy.

I was disappointed with the footage they decided to show. It doesn't really show much of the gameplay in a way that people are going to be able to relate to. They should have added a few extra scenes to add some context, like for example what they are doing out there.

There are a few details shown in the footage though, that are interesting. I wasn't a fan of Xenoblade's combat, but I think some tweaks could make it fun. In the footage, we've seen that the characters can swap weapons and jump in and out of their 'dolls.' Also by the character UI, it looks like all four characters have dolls. I do think some kind of optional online system could be cool if it was implemented in the game, in a way kind of like Dark Souls. You give the option to play offline, or online with other people. Could make Xenoblade's somewhat dull battle system more interesting in my opinion.

Either way, I'm still looking forward to the game. The visuals look nice and I'm sure we are going to get a big Takahashi story like usual.

I'll flat out say that I LOVED those treasure chests, especially running into ones I forgot to open, much later in the game, as a kind of monument to a battle from long before! The blue orbs have been replaced with blue glow sticks though. Maybe there'll be some interactivity with the environment beyond "pressing A" to activate things.

^^Well, sometimes I hope that those "Zelda" Nintendo gamers will be able to look at a series like Xeno- and include it in their "go to" when they think of Nintendo consoles like they do with 3D Mario and Zelda, I don't know if that sort of a situation was hoped for when Nintendo acquired MonolithSoft, but I hope it happens sometime. When I saw Xenoblade in a story about Operation Rainfall (this was while I was checking up on Skyward Sword) I didn't think "Oh, a JRPG! That's just a game for JRPG fans and I don't play JRPGS so I can't get it," I thought "Oh wow, that's an awesome looking game with a big adventure in a huge world, Nintendo made this?" So while the "JRPG" genre seems to be a "Sony" console thing, it'd be nice if the "Nintendo gamer" saw Xeno- as a Nintendo game and consider it along the lines of Metroid or Zelda when they're off to purchase a new game for their Nintendo console.

Nintendo should have done a better job showing gameplay for the first time, make Bill Trinen introduce the world, the setting, mention the genre, past games of the creators and then introduce the mechanics on a 5:00 video. Not only it failed to increase the interest gathered by the first two teasers but it has led to some confusion and as usual game journalists dont brother to clarify the mechanics or simply just lazily decide to post some gifs and call it a day. And no "Play Xenoblade" doesnt cut it since no one played it.

Did anyone else here point out the portrait mismatch on the current party members?

Like if you look at the video there are 2 guys and 2 girls... yet the portrait shows 3 guys?

I mean the pigtails girl is definitely there but no icon for her... just of an other extra dude.

I've got three big issues with the combat (so far):
-There doesn't seem to be any physics effects on or physical reactions from enemies when you're pumping them full of bullets or beating the crap out of them with swords.
-The UI is extremely cluttered, even ignoring the huge as damage numbers being vomited on the screen.
-All the weapons and mechs feel very weak, especially when it comes to sound design.

This game does seem interesting, but it feels like the guys designing the game didn't really do (or haven't gotten around to doing) anything to make the player character and the party feel powerful and thereby make the opponents seem more threatening. For example, XCOM has some pretty meaty sound effects for the starter guns, so that when you start going up against tougher enemies and those guns start falling short, you feel like those bad guys are dangerous because they're tougher and harder to beat.

After watching that gameplay, I no longer have any interest whatsoever. I had only watched the teaser reveal last (?) year, and had no idea that this was a Monster Hunter-clone. For those that like that sort of thing, I hope that X turns out well.

IT'S NOT A MONSTER HUNTER CLONE. Good god. It's about as furthest away from Monster Hunter as you can get.

This is another one of those, 'if enough people say it, everyone starts believing it' sort of brainwashing going on.

Xenoblade had very little in common with Monster Hunter. I doubt this game will as well, besides the fact that you can fight lots of powerful monsters. But then again, almost every rpg in existence has that in common with Monster Hunter.
