New 'X' trailer [Monolithsoft] shows uncut gameplay

The fact that Iwata said I will have more to show you later and not coming in 2014 makes me think it may be a 2015 game.

You're telling me the lack of a final name and actual trailer didn't?

I've always feared that this will be pushed back into 2015. Well, at least I can take my time with side missions in Xenoblade.

As much as I love the idea of a Xenoblade sequel-ish (once you've explored every nook and cranny of the original world it makes replaying a lot less special, so I'm looking forward to a new world), I can't help but worry that the mechs are going to kill this game.

Xenoblade managed to shine largely precisely because it had great continuity with "classic JRPGs" and not the sort of super-niche giant robot battles tangent of the rest of the Xeno series. It was really about adventure and battling monsters and fantasy - the stuff that RPGs thrive on. This game seems a lot less "pure" so far.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Xenoblade, but this looks alright. They really need to work on those animations though.

They also really need to tell us WTF this game is. Is it a story-driven RPG with some multi-player elements, or is it more of of an online driven game like PSO or MH?

The mechs only act as an extension of yourself, though. They can't be used constantly, and in some battles, it's actually better to not use them.

I dunno, giant robots could work nicely as a timed "high tension" / "powered up" form. Not enough giant robot jrpgs in the world.

Its most likely a story driven RPG. But...I wouldnt mind a PSO style game with a good story.

First 10 seconds I was a bit bummed.... but then the combat hit full swing. Damn did that look fun as all hell. I loved the fact that the combat was happening at two different scales like TitanFall.

Ill be going and seeing if I can preoprder this one tomorrow morning!

Adding robots to the mix doesn't take away from any of those qualities. The game is still going to thrive in the very same areas that Xenoblade did.

Urge to replay Xenoblade rising! The giant monster battle was interesting. It looks like evasion is more hands-on in X. Moving to the side seemed to avoid the giant's boulder throw. It's even more obvious player movement helped to avoid that charged up tackle/dive attack. Most of the time with Xenoblade's combat the effective incoming hit range was invisible. A bunnit(it's a bunny!) could kick you many body lengths away and score a hit despite it being nowhere near enough to realistically connect. I expect this to still be the case with small monsters but being able to actively dodge many attacks is very cool.

Well I dunno how far they are gonna take the Mech aspect but I did think Xenoblade could have use some kind of vehicle transport at times given how big areas where. The areas in this could be gigantic and could open up a more vertical exploration along with it.

What this thread shows me is that criminally not enough people have played Xenoblade. Combat in Xenoblade is quite engaging, moreso than most jrpgs.

It's not like there weren't giant robots in Xenoblade.

As far as MMO-style combat systems go, Xenoblade's wasn't too bad. I'll still need to hear that they've improved the combat (beyond adding mechs) or designed some proper sidequests before I can join the hype train.

I want a way to control how AI teammates behave a la FF12 gambits (or co-op altogether) as I want maximum customizability in tactics rather than the defaults that the game designers put in but I agree otherwise. I would get a Wii U for this game if it looks improved enough despite the fact I wouldn't even touch the bulk of Nintendo's first-party titles.

Eh. The combat really wasn't Xenoblade's strong suit, and what's shown yet wasn't anything upgraded over it. Looks good nonetheless.

Well that and having a late May date for Mario Kart. My personal guess would be that their big Christmas title will be Smash. What else do they have in house that is ready?

I'm not talking about gameplay.

I'm talking about appeal.

... Unless you think that "giant robots" in a game in an already niche genre is going to be good for appeal? I don't. When people think "grand adventure," they certainly aren't thinking "giant robots."

I give Nintendo enough flak for sticking ideas in franchises/genres where they don't belong. I didn't want it to happen to Xenoblade, too.

I'm an enormous fan of Xenogears and loved Xenoblade so I'm hoping for the best.

I find the previous games weren't necessarily ideal for trailers either, however I can't help but feel underwhelmed from what we saw today...last trailer was definitely more impactful.

More details are really necessary. Every time they've shown the game we see the "Player 1, 2, 3, 4," etc...am I to assume this game will include an online component/be completely online? It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo go and try to sell this game as their "HARDCORE ONLINE" game on Wii U. "See? We can do online, too!!!" etc.

Who knows if it'll work (or if it's totally off the mark).

Well... realistically speaking it's gonna be 2015. We don't even have a final "name" for X yet. At least this would mean that Monolithsoft has enough time to really go all out on it.

You realize who is making this, right?

This isn't Nintendo shoehorning mechs into a game.
This is Monolith being Monolith since Monolith was with SquareSoft.

We'll probably find out at E3. I don't think they'd leave the latter half of 2014 unanswered. Tbh, I'm surprised they showed off X in this Nintendo Direct if it's far from release. Then again, they did show it off in last years January Direct as well as E3.

So is the focus on online multiplayer after all? What's this player 1/2 stuff? Have there been any indications this is a story driven single player game with online modes?

Did you forget this is by the guys who did Xenogears which is probably still their biggest game and they did the Xenosaga games too (and Xenoblade still had some mecha), ofcourse it was pretty likely they were going to want to bring back mechs, these guys are clearly hugely into scifi given their worlds and storylines. Xenogears was most definitely a "grand adventure" and had anime-style mechs.

That was all tester stuff. It was pretty clear that this was not an online battle and that it was all single player.

I'm sold regardless, but is this co-op multi? Any chance of this happening? Wasn't it mentioned when it was first announced?

You aren't making a particularly coherent or good point for yourself. The addition of mechs here don't take away from "the appeal", in fact, given the response to the game so far, they add to it. Furthermore, as has already been mentioned, there were mechs in Xenoblade, too. And mechs don't belong in a sci-fi environment?

Yeah, I'm not following you at all.

Are you kidding me? Xenoblade's main antagonists were mechanical and the game took place on the bodies of two giant mechs. Being able to pilot a mech yourself in a followup is hardly something that wouldn't belong.

I don't know why you say it's pretty clear when enough people have shown to be either confused about the situation or think otherwise.

Yes, this game has co-op multiplayer. You will be able to play with up to three others iirc.

I thought they mentioned it at one point?
Monolith has said basically nothing about this game. It's amazing how quiet they've been.
After seeing how much more depth the combat has.....

I can't wait to fight that thing.

Oh god. That battle will be insane!

People also think this is a hack and slash Monster Hunter clone... Just because some people aren't thinking straight doesn't mean that it isn't obvious.
