i stopped drinking soda a long time ago.

ok that's not true. i still try to drink black cherry soda whenever it's available. and it's not usually. if i'm lucky, i get to drink one, once every 3 months.

me too. I have probably 1 can a month. if I have people over I'll stock the fridge with sodas for everyone and have a few cans myself, but that's even less frequent

Will it really though? What's to stop someone who would've gotten a large from just getting a second medium?

The fact that they have to do it.

Tests show serving someone on smaller dishes also leads to them eating less overall, even though no one's stopping them from just getting a second dish. Just a psychology thing.

Better solution? Legislate the maximum price of a 20oz bottle of water to 50 cents. Give consumers a cheaper, healthy option.

I guess as a symbol, this tells people who haven't been paying attention "Hey, this shit is bad for you" and that might help to an extent...

It does not matter what any test shows, government should not be regulating what i eat or drink.

Can't wait to see pictures on Reddit of restaurants selling value meals with two drinks.

Banning cigarettes? I get that.

Banning soda? What a joke.

Red meat, you're next.

Next up:
Pizza can only be served by the slice
Ice cream cones can only have one scoop
Single patty hamburgers only

King size candy bars banned... unless you are a king and show ID

That's what is important to note, these companies have been playing tricks with psychology for decades to get us to consume more of their product. Look at where it has gotten us. I'm fine with some mild pushback.

Ban soda but let everyone eat chese burgers and pizza till they explode, great plan.

I can speak from my experience. When I eat a cheeseburger and pizza I know fully how bad it is. It's greasy and delicious and filling. However, a soda is a drink and it's terribly easy to overconsume it in a way that you cannot with cheeseburger and pizza. You suck down hundreds of calories and tons of sugar in a few minutes and it is not filling, nor does it really quench your thirst.

I would say about 40% of the weight loss from my peak (which was not a high peak) came from cutting down on soda. The shit is just godawful. It's like an ice cream cone in a cup... that people are having 3+ times a day.

Silliness. This will have no marked effect on New Yorkers outside raising their ire. Telling people what they can ingest is a losing battle, and anyone who believes otherwise is well-meaning but delusional.

They're not, they're regulating what companies sell you. You want to drink 1000ozs of soda a day, go ahead. If tobacco companies start selling cigarettes the length of a pencil, I'm sure they'd step in too. One cigarette and 16oz of crap at a time, champ.

This is so stupid...

Education, EDUCATION is what people need! and healthy job conditions!

We didn't educate people out of smoking on planes and in restaurants.

We're not going to educate people from literally buying a 2 liter bottle of Sunkist everyday and killing it before dinner.

I wonder how many people in this thread actually understand who this "ban" is directed it at and whether or not they realize how many calories can be guzzled down in seconds...

A losing battle, that is not being fought?

wtf is going on? soda is bad and all but fuck this. I don't over consume Soda and would not be affected by this at all but I still think its fucked in the head.

Please, if they try and fuck with pizza we'd riot. The large size movie sodas are like swimming pools, its insane.

I'd say this definitely helps. People would just drink more than then actually need to/want to just because it's there. I would bet that a lot of people won't go back for a second cup/refill.

title needs to be edited... this law isn't really reducing anything - just setting an upper limit on portion sizes.

The allowed amounts are more than what a person should be drinking still. Cutting a few ounces off potentially a week from a person with an unhealthy diet is not going to make a difference.

Incoming BOGO deals on 16-oz cups.

Also, have fun watching all the 16.7 oz bottles go down to 15.7 oz and staying the same price. Less drink for more money!

I would actually like a meat ban. It would put the spotlight on vegetarian alternatives and allow them to become cheaper/more desirable. Better, healthier food and without having to torture animals to get it. Win/win in the long run.

They're right, the ban on large size sodas doesn't limit choice of drink type, only the portions that it is delivered in. I don't think the soda companies can argue it limits choice in court because you can always just buy 2 smaller drinks if you really want more.

And here we go. Personally, I'm indifferent to it as I don't drink soda all that often nor buy it as part of my groceries. I understand that obesity is at the heart of this issue, but people can make healthy choices. Families need to cut it off like any bad habit over time.

But part me thinks that Bloomberg wants to end his term with a bang and this one of these milestones that he just checked off. Tough issue. I suppose I agree with the banning since poor families are often the ones that consume soda a ton and I live in a working class neighborhood in the city. What say you GAF? Do you agree or disagree with the ban?

It's not soda it's doing nothing after drinking it

Yes the government should mandate everything to fulfill your personal moral code.

"Legalize marijuana, but ban large sodas!"

Well, one is much worse than the other (hint: not marijuana), and they're banning the quantity that can be sold as a single product, not the product itself.

I don't know how I feel about this ban, but obesity is an epidemic in this country and it's costing lives and it's costing money.

Soda is bad sure, but telling people that they cannot have it is a very fine line for me. I don't agree with that at all. I don't even agree that drugs are banned either. If you want people to not drink soda then educate them on how many calories are in a 20 oz and how much sugar they are drinking and what the affects are of doing so, but taking away their freedom is just really stupid imo. I drink diet soda, and know it is bad for me, but I am not consuming sugar (just cancer) and I would be affected by this ban also because they probably lumped it in with regular soda when it actually isn't filled with sugar.

Stopping soda will not cure obesity, educating people from a young age, providing healthy meals (that taste good) at schools will help far more then banning somebodies right to have soda. Instead of taking the easy route while pissing people off, why can you not use the smart route and educate people from a young age?

I understand the default bias argument, but I still don't feel good about a ban of surgery drinks over 16 ounces.

It feels like there should have been a tax on drinks larger than 16 ounces to make them proportionally more expensive and then use that money to fight obesity.

They're not. You can drink as much soda as you want.

That said, I don't think this will be effective. I don't think its a horrific violation of freedom, but I'm dubious how much of an effect it will have.
