When it released its quarterly earnings report today, Rockstar Games' parent company, Take-Two Interactive, narrowed the time frame for the debut of the Grand Theft Auto series on next-generation consoles. As part of its outlook for its ongoing 2006 fiscal year, which ends on Halloween, the company said it is readying "a sequel of a Rockstar brand for a current-generation console system." (Emphasis added.) Though Take-Two did say it will release a new GTA game for the PSP during that time, the statement eliminated any chance that a next-gen installment in the franchise will make its traditional late-October window.

Indeed, Take-Two's earnings announcement went on to explicitly say that, other than the just-announced Table Tennis, no Rockstar game will arrive on next-generation consoles before the beginning of its next fiscal year. "For [fiscal] 2007, the company anticipates a strong next generation lineup from Rockstar Games including sequels to several of Rockstar's most successful franchises," Take-Two's statement said. That means the earliest a next-gen GTA could arrive would be November 2006, right around the same time Sony is expected to launch its PlayStation 3 in the US.

But while all GTA games since 2001's Grand Theft Auto III have debuted on a Sony console--2004's Grand Theft Auto Advance excepted--Take-Two executives refused to say if the first next-gen GTA will be PS3-exclusive. When asked by an analyst in a post-announcement conference call if Take-Two has decided to partner with either Sony or Microsoft for the "next console version of GTA," CEO Paul Eibler demurred. "Our guys are very, very excited about the opportunity that next-gen hardware presents," he said.

When asked by the same analyst if Take-Two could possibly release two different GTA games--one for the Xbox 360 and another for the PS3, Eiblier gave a similarly cautious response. "Anything is possible," he said "but, you know, it will be what you would expect in a great Grand Theft Auto product." He then directed the analyst to "to refer back to our press release, where we said that we have a strong lineup of next generation products from Rockstar in [fiscal] 2007, including some of their best franchises."

After UBS analyst Mike Wallace asked about how a November PS3 launch would affect Take-Two's 2006 fiscal year, Eibler clammed up entirely. "I'm going to go underneath your question," he said. "In terms of when is PlayStation 3 really going to launch ... our crystal ball really doesn't address that, and we certainly look at Sony in terms of further information there."

Reading through the mist...

- Take Two/Rockstar doesn't know when PS3 will launch, and is obviously concerned because it would dramatically effect earnings because they have major products slated for it. Only Sony knows the answers, which isn't good!

- It doesn't seem like any final decision has been made as to exclusive windows/multiplatform/multi version support.

- Take Two/Rockstar's strategy is "GTA every chance we get."

Unlikely,they simply won't tell us until E3.

E3 2007. Or perhaps even later. Rockstar always keeps the lid on GTA games until the last minute.

Xbox 360 release first would shake up the western market. MGS4 should follow suit on X360 then. ;)

I don't think that's an announcement we'll get at E3. Rockstar/TakeTwo will probably have their own seperate press conference for this sort of news. They'll make as big a deal of it as possible, and they'll do it when other big game news subsides so they get all the press to themselves. If they currently made a decision, my opinion is that they would take advantage of the lull before the storm.

Never know, thats possible (360/GTA). They may not be willing to wait for PS3. I think GTA is mediocre, but would definately be a title for MS to go after for the 'tards that suck up that game.

Are you calling me a tard? I think you are.

Well, the only issue I see right now is timing, and their own blockbuster could work against them. GTA games seem to launch in late October, so we can tentatively set October 2007 as the release of the next gen GTA. On Playstation 3 GTA can have the limelight onto itself. If it is released on Xbox 360 the game could be going head to head with Halo 3. Both blockbuster games would not be released in the same timeframe. And since Xmas 2007 seems to be the big battleground, you would figure MS would want their biggest game ready for release in November '07.

I agree with all points.

They usually don't show the game until the last minute but they announce which platform they're developing the game for a lot before the actual release.
And I bet we're going to know where the next gen is headed at E3 2006.

imagine if they actually did do something like ... not announce what platform it was for ... then release screens, not saying what platform ... oh man that would generate a HUGE buzz!

What, you don't think there aren't gonna be any huge PS3 games dropping in '07? I reckon GT5 will be prepped for that time period (no way it's dropping this year). And how's Halo 3 gonna harm GTA4 anyway? They're two different games.

Anyway, unless Sony or MS are willing to give Rockstar 50 million bucks, GTA4's gonna hit both machines.

here is the complete PR - it doesnt say anything about a next gen gta besides:

For 2007, the Company anticipates a strong next generation lineup from Rockstar Games including sequels to several of Rockstar's most successful franchises.

and in 2006 for psp

two new PSP titles, including an all-new Grand Theft Auto title

so what else can they add to gta, its like everything is already in san andreas. All that they could do is improve everything, in particular shooting and general movement

What seperates GTA over its clones is that there's a greater level of interactivity so thats what they can improve. Being able to bust out windows to get into houses or to evade police for example. And online play wouldn't hurt. :P

thats true but i think they should first get rid of the some of the weaknesses with the current gta games that i have found e.g. you should be able to 'lose' the cops without going to that outdated 'pay n spray' thingo.

Eyetoy presents much more interesting possibilities in this department ;)
More interesting than the Revmote strap-on attachment? I don't think so.
