Next-Gen PS5 & XSX |OT| Console tEch threaD

This is all the average user is going to see or care about for next gen ( If they are not already locked to a brand)

XSX- 12.1TF 1TB HD
PS5- 10.2TF 800MB HD

It will be marketed as a 20% advantage in speed and storage. (True or not).

I don't see Sony winning the marketing war unless they have something they have not showed us yet or the XSX is released at some crazy high price because of Lockhart.

PS5 will likely be $399 at most.
I don't want to spoil it for you, but BOM cost of PS5 is, according to Bloomberg, 460$. And that's without shipping, cut for retailers, R&D costs, and whole logistics.

So you really expect Sony to "eat" 60$ BOM price and also logistics, cut for retailers and R&D? That would be beyond 150$ per console, maybe more.

Yeah....no way. Sony isn't that financially stable to afford that.

There is a reason, why Sony is waiting with price because of Microsoft. If they knew, their target price is 399$ they couldn't care less about Microsoft.

BOM price for PS5 and XsX isn't that different (Zhug said around PS5 is around 20$ cheaper) so I don't expect any price difference. If Sony will come up with 450$, Microsoft will match.

The problem here is Zhuge doesn't break the BOM down at all and Bloomberg's estimate doesn't really add up as they have RAM/SSD totals at ~$250 for both consoles and I estimate $120 (more for the larger XSX chip?) for the APU but their entire BOM estimate is $450 for the PS5.....$80 for everything else?

Either the BOMs for these consoles are way into the $5xx or these estimates are way too high on the major components.

How we get a $300 retail Lockhart without a decent loss I have no idea.

Often heard is the argument that developers will not have enough time to create huge amount of assets and arts to take advantage of the SSD and I/O speed of the PS5.

It looks like this acquistion by Sony will solve that.

PSP Go, anyone?

Indeed so. But people throwing around prices, and BOM's and hardware components are the ones who are really into this thing, while the average mom and dad on the street will have no idea why this less expensive console isn't the best for their kids at home, right? I mean, look at the price!

Because let's be honest, a grown up who is in the control of their own finances and who wants the best of this console generation, will most likely buy the more powerful console; but little Timmy back home will probably have a pretty hard time, trying to convince his parents to buy him a newer console which, come on... will do pretty much the same thing as the old one. Which probably still works just fine, and it's already in Microsoft's ecosystem. So... can you explain that to your parents, Timmy?

I have no idea how Microsoft will market this console, and I am also not sure how many units they hope to move, but it will be interesting.
I still think Lockart is a thing, but not for now. Terminate One X because there's a new premium console, ok. But why keep two low profile consoles(three, if you count One S and One SAD as two) at the same time if you can play all games on both? Lockart would make sense if it was launched when One S was terminated, which probably would be when new gen exclusives from MS studios began to appear.

Don't think so, as far as I know this tech be it Voxels or Pixel Cloud Data like "Unlimited Detail" stuff has been around forever. Yet this stuff is only static and can't be animated/morphed in real time.
But maybe we will have enough raw power or some new idea how to animate such stuff in the future. Who knows. 🤷‍♂️

If MS goes with a two SKU strategy, they will eat the loss on the cheaper SKU and either make a profit or break even on the premium one. Hence why Tom Warren said that 499$ for XSX would be "bold".

Somehow it has flown by many people's head that ram and nand prices didn't just go up for Sony, they went up for everybody. Considering MS is going with a more expensive RAM configuration, more expensive NAND with plain more of it, and a bigger APU, I struggle to understand a small difference in BOM between the two.

The rumors about Sony having a hard time pricing the PS5 probably come down to the fact they wanted a 399$ console again (Ps4 - 399, PS4Pro - 399), but probably can't. It will certainly be over. On the other side MS has launched two systems at 499$ (Xbox One, Xbox one X), and they will be struggling to meet that price this time around. Lockhart however will be there for the price conscious gamer, so MS will be able to leverage that knowing that those who don't mind paying more for a premium product, well, they don't mind paying more for the premium product.

I know that the "beating the dead horse for three generations now" narrative is that big daddy MS has so much money they don't mind losing money hand over fist, but that's just fanboy talk. There's a real danger Xbox market doesn't grow, but instead shrinks - that some people think this is impossible is funny - and if that comes on the back of big losses it's over for the hardware and they will go full blown Xbox as a game service brand on PC. Isn't that the whole "Amazon and Google are our competition" talk?

I find it interesting that everyone is assuming that the PS5 is going to be super expensive when Cerny state's several times throughout Road to PS5 that Sony was being price conscious of the system. If you are stating something like that several times, that means you realize that price is a big deal. Sony isn't dumb. They know that $399 was a boon for them during the PS4 launch and already saw what kind of havoc $499 and $599 can cause. Why would they shoot themselves in the foot and try to jack up the price?

On the other side, MS is not going to try and undercut Sony by too much, if at all with XSX. Such a move would screw them in trying to release Lockhart. What sense would it make for MS to price XSX at $399-449 and then price Lockhart at $299? Consumers are going to look at that and scratch their heads.
I want to believe in the gold 399 number, by the way they did it twice this gen with PS4 and PS5 Pro, but what troubles me is Cerny saying the price would be appealing considering all tech inside. That does scream premium.

This is photogrammetry which is already used in Death Stranding. PS4 1.8TF can already render this kind of visual using photogrammetry.

The reason it works for Death Stranding is because Sam Porter walks very slowly, so the streaming of data is not too taxing on the HDD.

10TF is more than enough for this technology. The bottleneck is RAM to house all the data. But the work around for that would be SSD-no-bottleneck-streaming like the PS5. (xsex io speed is still up in the air)

It is static but it can be morphed and combined with dynamic assets too. Unless you have a game like minecraft where everything is dynamic, static assets will exist in vast amounts in games.

Indeed PS5 being instant in everything vs some waiting on XsX will present PS5 as a faster console to the man on the street.

I've often said that while both consoles will be quite close graphically, I'm not so sure it will be apparent in general by the average gamer unless you're in the business (personally or professionally) of analyzing using a "mag lens" of sorts such as DF. However, when it comes to loading speeds, that is instantly recognizable regardless of which console is faster. I'll notice how fast I can get into a game or different maps and modes much quicker than I'll notice various texture resolutions as I play. Couldn't agree with you here more.

Division 2 also uses Photogrammetry now that you mention this.

PS5 SSD and I/O is a game-changer. Developers wouldn't be excited for it if it is not. Some devs even called PS5 the most exciting hardware in 20 years according to Jason Schreier.

AtomView acquired by Sony.

Not everything about it is photogrammetry. It has procedural generation for fast creation of assets too.

In that case/sense yeah static environments might get Visual stunning appearances with these techs.
However I would like for games to have more destructable and organic stuff with great dynamic physics and such.
Probably because I'm used to play such games be it No Mans Sky, Minecraft, Subanautica and so on.

But yeah Death Stranding has really stunning and detailed landscapes, can't argue that.
However vegetation will be a problem with this tech right? You can't use this photogrammetry stuff for it because vegetation has to move in the wind and so on.
Guess it might still be a good additional tech to be used yeah, like in Death Stranding.

Aside from what is cheaper, custom just means custom. I believe that who thinks that can objectevely prove that "custom" means something precise it's simply playing with wishes. All these top-tier engineers and economics expert that can extrapolate technical specs and features from single words should present their CV to corporations, or to the circus.
Overall it's a very sterile discussion, custom means that is customized for the occasion, that's really it. How so, we will see.

I have to say I fully agree. For all we know they added a couple of features and their respective IO, but nothing too fancy. There's no reason to do so when you are mimicking off the shelf parts

Sony have 12 chips (not expensive chips) and reason it is fast is they used 12 lanes. If you mind thinks twice as fast must be twice the price, then I cant help you. It is not a hard concept to get your head around, bigger OPTIMUM bus using low cost chips is the advantage

LMAO - if you think thats funny I do not know why ?

Performance vs cost - do you have any understanding of design engineering ?

A solution is only impressive if it ticks the performance and cost boxes, otherwise its not. Both will use vapour chambers, lets see what is novel about Sonys one.

Also calling me a boy, you sound quite young, a bit like my son asking questions as he studies his A levels or whatever kids call them nowadays.
What? I didn't imply that the PS5 SSD is twice as expensive.
I just replied to your senseless statements.

Statement 1:
The cooling solution is only impressive if it has a good price to performance ratio. (paraphrased)
Reply:
Not really. I guess a solid price to performance ratio would make it more impressive but it can be impressive by itself.
A fucking RTX2080Ti or a goddamn Bugatti Chiron have shit price to performance ratios but they're still impressive don't you think?

Statement 2:
PS5's IO and audio advantage is minor because XSX has dedicated silicon for those things, too. (paraphrased)
Reply:
At least regarding the IO system, no way in hell is PS5's advantage MINOR, not even remotely. They're on different levels. You can have an XSX tier SSD right now if you want. Can't say the same about PS5.

And to quote your reply: "A solution is only impressive if it ticks the performance AND cost boxes"
As I said, nah. Can't agree with that.

This week will be long...I hope that at least until Wednesday the two companies have already talked about online conferences. Anxiety is killing me.

Guys watch out from any PlayStation tweet or PlayStation YouTube video the leaks of TLOUP2 are there ..

People these days are just unbearable

Everybody craving attention for the pettiest of things. How is spoiling others this way in anyway fun? Miserable people really.

I really don't care about the leak. This is a problem of sony's own making. the reason for delayed launch given was "delayed indefinitely due to logistic problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic ...preventing us from providing the launch experience our players deserve." Its likely that they wanted to use the launch in conjunction with some other announcement (PS5 ?) and they got burned waiting. I don't blame Sony for the leak but its just another bad decision which has lead to it. They should just release the digital version and cut their losses,

Does Xbox Game Pass mean more games like Gears Tactics and fewer blockbusters?
But while Microsoft is releasing Gears Tactics and trying to provide a variety of experiences, does that mean the company is going to focus on funding a lot more smaller games? And is it going to do that at the expense of large, tentpole blockbusters?

"You know it's really about both," said Decker. "It really is — because, again, our members want to see both. That's the feedback we've heard loud and clear. They love discovering that sort of small developer with a game they've never heard of in a genre that they maybe didn't even know was a genre. And they love discovering quirkier indie games, but they also want to see big triple-A or quadruple-A hits in the service as well."

Decker says Microsoft wants Game Pass to feel similar in its variety to going to the movies. You can find some unique foreign film at the art-house cinema, but then you also want to see The Avengers.

If it provided that much freedom it wouldn't be a Gears game. But fair enough, hopefully in the future.

Each studio has large and small teams, so both is possible.

This is a fantasy. Double fine doesn't have a small and big team, Ninja Theory doesn't have a small and big team, etc

Is MS willing to lose over $50-$100 per console here?

I would bet they will be more willing to lose 50$-100$ on Lockhart than on XSX.

With more money come more resources.
So the studio's leaders devised a new plan: it would split its personnel into smaller teams to release shorter, focused games but with blockbuster quality. It's this "independent triple-A" approach that led to the creation of the eight-hour Hellblade and changed Ninja Theory's future entirely.

So how do you explain Lockhart being 4 TFs at $299 or $349 to the average user?

You put an article that proves my point. It's the reason why HellBlade and Bleeding Edge are three years apart, despite both being small games.

Yes HellBlade looks good but, if you played it then you know it's clearly a small budget game made by a small team.

It's not easy to have two teams when you need every hand on deck. Naughty Dog tried it for example, and it didn't work. What works is having a small team that is in pre production of the next project, so that when the rest of the studio is done with the "main" project they slide right into full production.

It's a tough one. I could see the Lockhart APU being used for xCloud so cutting costs there but $300 retail still must be losing money and that doesn't seem like good business sense to me.
I assume a $499 XSX is already breaking even at best and more likely losing money too, but at least here the buyers will spend far more money on games and services than Lockhart buyers.

The Series X's BC and PS5's are not the same, full stop. You trying to imply they are is laughable at best, same goes for the other guy.

Wrong on every point? Sounds like you need to read more.

So I'm wrong on EVERY point? If you're going to driveby troll do it a little better than that.

Also, to the other post trying to make it appear as if Sony and Microsoft's BC situation will be the same when Xbox is guaranteeing thousands of titles, and I can bet that every game currently backwards compatible on xbox one will, even if not right away, definitely work on Xbox Series X. On the PS5 side of things they first talked about the top 100, and then they basically walked it back somewhat to say that they actually meant more than that. The BC situation on the PS5 is a whole lot more up in the air in terms of total and complete game compatibility than is the case for Xbox Series X, and anyone with an honest bone in their body knows this.

Nah man, you're not in this thing to inform. At least be honest about what drives most of your posts in the thread.

You can build PC with even faster SDD than XSX has (2.4 GB/s), however without hardware decompression it will be 3-4x times slower compared to XSX SDD. According to Dealer Gaming comparison his 970 pro (3.5 GB/s) was over 3x times slower compared to XSX SDD. I hope Nv or AMD will bulid HW decompression into their upcoming GPUs because otherwise SDDs on consoles will be far supperior despite being slower.

when ps5 pro and xsx pro comes out in 2025 with 8k 30fps-60pfs being the norm, what will be the storage medium for games dudez?

I wanna predict xsx pro and ps5 pro specs for shitz and giggles:

AMD Zen 5 3nm 12 Core 24 thread CPU at close to 4Ghz
AMD Next Gen 3nm GPU with Super Charged 80-100 Compute Units at 2ghz - 2.5ghz
TFLOPS: 24 because you have to say 'double' from the previous generation.
SSD: Has ReRAM technology, so SSD speed will be close to 10GB/sec-15GB/sec
RAM: 25GB of GDDR7 at close to 800GB- 1 TB/sec (so it will be double the current bandwidth)
Internet: Wifi6-Wifi7

For PS6 and Xbox X^infinity that will come out in 2030:
AMD Zen 8 1nm 24 Core 48 thread CPU at 4.5ghz-5ghz
AMD Next Gen 1nm GPU with Super Charged 140-180 Compute Units Close to 3Ghz
TFLOPS: 42 because you have to say 'double' from previous generation
SSD: Has ReRAM technology, so SSD speed will be close to 20GB/sec-30GB/sec
RAM: 40-50 GB of GDDR8 at close to 2TB/sec
Internet: Wifi7-Wifi8

Anyone kinda hoping for a 5/5 PS5 unveil? Its a Tuesday, its May.... so it does have to happen in the next few weeks or so....or we will be seeing a lot of games and wondering where the system is at.

RDNA2 supports wavefront sizes 32 & 64, XSX needs this too for bc.
RDNA2 is not only confirmed by Sony but also AMD confirmed in one of their presentations next gen consoles are RDNA2. Leaves no room for speculation or crazy theories.

Misinterpreting what?
Navi10= RDNA1
No RT bespoke hardware= RDNA1

What other interpretation is there?

The context of Rogame's post. Yes, it listed Navi 10, which is RDNA1. And it listed Oberon. But that doesn't mean the Navi 10 listing was for Oberon in Oberon's own tests, just Ariel iGPU profile regression tests.

It's not really that hard to come to a conclusion on, otherwise you're somehow insisting either Arden was the XSX chip and Oberon isn't PS5 (so what is PS5's chip if that's the case?), or neither chips are for their respective systems, which is very difficult to believe since we know outside of some CUs disabled and a clock speed adjustment XSX and PS5 fit Arden and Oberon practically like a glove.

And it's also been mentioned both chips are custom RDNA2, they won't be exactly 100% equivalent to the PC RDNA2 GPUs coming out later this year.

How much do you think RDNA 2 is going to improve in the IPC field compare than the first generation? :goog_unsure:

I think should be around 5%-10%.

I'm a bit more optimistic, would say 15% - 20%.

1. A bugatti priced cooling solution would be something Cerny would be proud of for a price sensitive console ? Not logical.

2. When revealed I can guarantee the clever bit is the cooling at a low cost, as all engineering around a 120 million unit heavily subsidised console that makes money on services in a closed market is exactly that.

Top end Bugatti and Nvidia top end GPU type solutions and examples are not impressive for a 120 million mass market console for kids that is subsidised and paid for by subscriptions and software licenses.

Bookmark. You obviously dont do much cost sensitive design engineering.
