Or, you know, you're wrong, as I stated twice, unless you think Sony INCREASED their production to 15 million from 10 million (from 5M?), then cut it by 4 million to 11 million.

15 million by March 2021 would've been very high anyway. By March 2014, PS4 was only at 7.5 million sold.

No way they're going over $500 if they planned on needing/selling that many so early.
Odd that this article says they're REDUCING production to about 10-11 million when earlier articles said they had INCREASED production by 3-4 million units to hit that same 10 million figure. Wonder if some wires are crossed there? Seems like one or both of those reports has some wires crossed. BTW, how many XSX and XSS are being produced? Do we have any clue?

Agreed, what was said is that it is primarily RDNA 2 with features from RDNA 1 in addition to features that are in neither.
Saying those features could end up being in RDNA 3 isn't anything crazy and isn't something he would deny.
The point being that acting like it's RDNA 1.9 or 1.1 is dumb

It does suck it seems to be missing ML features . But, aside from that what he is stating is very positive.

Most of all, it's not true. TSMC is reported to have historically high yields on the 7nm fab node. So relax, neither console will have any such issues.
Not if those bad nodes are used for series s.

And to the Xbox fans eating this shit up, you do know your console has 50+ CUs under the same fab node by the same TSMC. If the ps5 yeilds are 50%, then the xsx is what? 20%?

Xbox will have the exact same yield issues in their manufacturing process. Some have even speculated that the chips that failed to meet the requirements of the XSX are then used in the XSS?
 
For reference, here are the BC tests conducted just before the devkits shipped to developers

So basically:

Native mode = Boost Mode: On
BC1 mode = PS4 Pro Legacy Mode (BM: Off)
BC2 mode = PS4 Legacy Mode (BM: Off)

Most people on this forum have no idea what yield is, what the numbers in the article means and if this in any way relates to them. Nevertheless there is a complete panic with several threads and a green brigade out in full force.

In short: Assuming the article is correct, 1) 50% yield of initial manufacturing for a big piece of silicon is ok but needs to go up over time. 2) It has no meaning for your product as you buy it what the yield was when manufactured and 3) Sony has not cut production at all (but might get fewer units to sell due to the supposed yield issue).

The timing of this is a bit funny though, there always seem to be hit pieces when Sony is about to come out with something good. THAT is interesting. Same story last time - and it was nothing then in the end.

What's funniest to me is the fanboys running with the idea that Sony will solve yield issues by lowering their gpu clocks last minute, as if that's going to somehow reactivate the faulty CUs

PS5 had problems in its development like all consoles. And all these problems were solved. In the case of PS5, the best known problem was that of temperature, which did not allow to achieve the desired theoretical performance. That was fixed a long time ago and it's over.

They are not going to put up for sale 50% of the production of supposedly defective consoles that can cause an "explosion" or "insufficient performance", let's be serious, that will not happen, and if it did happen (in dreams more damp from those who want the downfall of Sony) I'm sure a company like Sony will be quick to replace those units with new ones at zero cost to the consumer (just like MS did in the past with their faulty batches, if I'm wrong on this point Please be corrected).

Finally I think it is important to say something obvious, that although it is obvious it is possible that someone has not thought about it, the PS5DE will be a little more "silent" and "fresh" than the PS5 (for the BD reader). And this does not mean that the same performance cannot be obtained in both. In fact, the difference in temperature is laughable. In any case the power of both is the same... same... same... (With echo).

I think the only worrying thing at this point is not the temperature or the (proven) performance of the PS5, I think the worrying thing is the absence of exclusive quality nextgen in the XSX launch catalog. But even more worrying than that is the fact that by now not enough material has been seen working on an XSX (in my modest opinion).

I hope that this will change between now and launch, but I haven't heard anything about it yet.

Dude, hitting full victimism now?

Let's assume there are really yield problems, do you think defective chips are still being used on the console? At most, this problem could cause shortage and cost hike, which is up to Sony whether it will go to the final price.

What bad news, some idiot who does not understand semi conductor making up a rumour that is hilarious, probably has no idea even teh difference between parametric and partiiculate effects on yield at TSMC.

That's not how things work :)
Yields relate to the amount of valid CUs in the chip. That's why Sony, Microsoft, etc deactivate a few CUs per chip. That means, you would need to have more than 4 or so CUs defective to throw away the chip.

That's all, nothing to do with downclocking, so please don't be deceived ok?

Furthermore, if TSMC is having yield issues for Sony, it will have exactly the same or worse for Microsoft as they are on the same fab node.
 
About the 50% failure rate. Did people really expect that automatic production is 100% smooth? Sony should be happy that they found out the failure rate. Look at Samsung Fold 1 before they found out about the hinge.

it will not affect consumer units, there will just be less of them. It may affect how low sony would be willing to price the console, given they're losing money with every bad chip. And this is all under the assumption that there actually is a yield problem

I remember watching Nightmare on Elm Street as an 8 year old and thought that was scary. Don't know watching this now how I'll feel. Most horror movies now just make me laugh. They're more comedy to me :P

No, bad yields just mean that a percentage of manufactured chips exceeded the allowed number of defective CUs(more than 4 assuming PS5 chips have 40 CUs, 4 deactivated). TSMC checks this for every wafer, and will deliver to AMD/Sony only those with a minimum of 36 working CUs. So, it won't 'blow up on your face' when you turn it on.

If those chips were being made for PC graphics cards, defective ones could still be used for lesser cards in the lineup according to how many CUs they use. This could be the case for MS, they could use any XSX chip up to 32 defective CUs on XSS.
 
It is entirely possible that fewer chips can handle the PS5s extremely high GPU clocks than anticipated.

Yes, XSX has a bigger APU but also has conservative clocks.
