What is changing?
The following changes will come into effect online from 21 – 26 October, and on mobile on 28 October:

• You will no longer be able to buy:
o PlayStation®3 games and add-ons
o PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) games and add-ons
o PlayStation®Vita games and add-ons
o Apps
o Themes
o Avatars

• The Wishlist feature will be discontinued and any items currently on "Your Wishlist" will be removed.

RIP, PS3/Vita.

What does this mean for you?
The content listed above will no longer be available to buy on PS Store when accessed via a desktop or mobile device. However, you will still be able to buy PS3™, PSP or PS Vita content by accessing PS Store directly from your PS3, PSP or PS Vita. PlayStation®4 apps, themes and avatars can also be downloaded via PS Store on your PS4™ console.

What about the content you already own?
You will still be able to access all your previously purchased PS3, PSP or PS Vita content as before. Your existing PS4 apps, themes and avatars will remain on your PS4 console.

For me, that's what was actually rather nice about the whole EAPlay on Gamepass deal, not simply the benefits to gamers, but Microsoft preventing subscription money going somewhere else. But of course, they won't be able to do that with every service that comes out.

The EA Deal to me is really interesting mainly because we don't know who approached who in that scenario. Obviously, you would think it was Microsoft who went to them but at the same time EA Access/Play didn't exactly light the world on fire when it hit. I dont really know anyone subbed to it at this point and there really isnt much reason to be.

It obviously isn't hurting EA but its not doing much for em. I feel like this was a way for EA to increase their player base without having to really do much and Microsoft can simply add it to their portfolio of reasons to have GP. EA games get new players who might spend money and Microsoft offers more value to their subscription making GPU even more of a no brainer in their eco system. Its becoming increasingly, by the month it feels like, if you dont have GP on Xbox you are doing it wrong.

The PS5 UI seems to be doubling down on engagement design.

It's presenting many ways you can interact and engage with your friends.

Of course Sony knows that this is important for the growth of the console (or to maintain the current marketshare), as many people get the console to play with their real world friends (as opposed to people they meet online). They become advocates for the console, so the same game can be played/shared together. It's one of the reasons why Sony has been so reluctant to allow cross play with other game systems. Sony will be doubling down on releasing exclusive games that allow shared experiences.

Also I expect Youtube and other streaming services to be accessed via a portal, similar to how it's done on the PS4. Sony charges for the placement of those services in that portal.

Another important item is how many features of the OS is being pay-walled behind PS+. Like the help videos.

Unfortunately a lot of these "forced" UI items are not consumer friendly, especially if you don't care for those features. All platforms are heading in that direction, and even Games as a Service are designed that way.

Personally I have mixed feelings about all this, in terms of engaging the OS. Some of it I like, and others I don't care for.

The placement of an on/off mic in the controller is huge for engagement, and with the traditional past behavior of most people is to not use the headset, will now in many cases, engage via voice, or text messaging driven by voice recognition.

From a business perspective, I think Sony is doing the right thing, and it's what I would do in their position. Their main competition in MS will be doing this, and tried in the last generation to make the voice controlled Xbox to be the center of the living room. That was seen as too intrusive, and they went too far, too early. Sony is offering it, but with many places you can avoid/block/turn off, giving the person the control to engage at the level they feel comfortable with. Unfortunately the UI "clutter" and extra steps to reach a certain item is annoying.

Well, considering EA's history with MTX, they could perfectly be willing to prioritize a larger player number over the direct revenue with their subscription service since they definitely weren't doing crazy numbers with it, so yeah, it would make sense for both EA and Microsoft.

Guys for all we know even the PC RDNA2 is just RDNA1 + RT + ?

Until we know all the details of RX 6000 GPUs and the consoles, it's impossible to say anything really. And its harder because the consoles are custom.

I think many people wouldnt mind knowing beforehand if you can play a certain game on a certain console. I would be more happy if they say "Coming to Xbox and PC" than not mentioning platforms just so they dont upset people.
I think it would be way better if they say something like "Look, these are our IPs now, our studios, you wont see them anywhere else". But then again, this may be the case once the deal is finished.

We will have to wait and see if the deal lasts. There was no time frame at this point.

My stab at it.

Front-End RDNA1: <--- Geometry setup. Might mean no programable "Geometry Engine" as per Mark Cerny's talk. Mark made a point of discussing this, and MS has yet to mention anything similar. Does this mean geometry on the XSX is fixed functions only??? Mesh Shaders MS equivalent, or is that driven by fixed functions?

Compute Units: RDNA1, RT: RDNA2 <--- this has been always understood as the big advancement being made to RDNA2 in that they added traversal/intersection engines for RT. But rasterization (traditional vertex/pixel shading rendering) part is the same.

Render-Back-Ends" RDNA2. <--- The ROPS? Not sure what changes have been made here. My guess, efficiency changes.

Ray tracing cores are being shipped in the game boxes. Each game will give you a single RT core that you just need to sprinkle from the top of the series X, you know those vent holes on the top. Just drop them RT cores on it and see the magic.

For all we know, yes, it's RDNA1 + RT + other things, but... There's this thing that I can't forget and it's Mark Cerny talking about how some of the PS5 GPU features could appear on RDNA2 graphics cards. Why would he put such a disclaimer if not by expecting something to be shared across PS5 and RDNA2? I think most people would assume it's the RT but we already knew AMD wanted hardware RT. We'll get the answers on the 28th but it's hell interesting.

Talking about this is though because I don't want to fall on the "secret/exclusive sauce" argument.

I have the 1000xm4 and they really sound great. I don't think the Pulse 3D can match the sound quality, regardless of the difference in driver size.

Good to know! I'm more tempted now to get my pair later! I'll wait for the reviews with PS5, as I'll most likely use it for PS5 and connect it to the tv via bluetooth to watch netflix as well.

Smart move by Phil here. In 2 years from now he'd know if the Series X/S was a hit or a flop and based on next gen xboxes success he can decide if releasing bethesda games should be dealt on a case by case basis or just release all games on other competing platforms without much hoopla!
 
Good to hear the Bethesda games will be coming to Game Pass on day one. Hope to see something of Starfield before the end of the year

Reads like he wants to come out of this as the good guy, even though he already knows that it won't release on PlayStation.
Its basically: "We don't want to deny those games to everyone else. But it won't come out on Playstation. But you can play it on Game Pass, Xbox, Xcloud..".
