Next-Gen PS5 & XSX |OT| Console tEch threaD

Apple has been doing this. Start with soc in phones and bump it up in their next ipad.

Series X soc design seems like MS has the same idea. 🤷‍♀️

No need for that, they can plant more CU's and cores when 5-3nm is available on the same die . Such design would only cost them lots of wasted money.

I think we are blowing a little bit out of proportion the whole xCloud and cross-gen scenario. The way I see it, it's quite simple, MS is aware that challenging Sony on the basis of Hardware and Software sales, given the current gen, is going to be an uphill battle, so they shifted their focus towards providing services on an ecosystem that makes playing easy at many different levels.

Is that strategy good or bad? Honestly, the point is if you find it appealing. I personally don't, I basically want great games that push forward the medium, that are centered around strong narrative and that have a certain gravitas to them, when it comes to their potential impact as media content. And, right now, for me Sony is way ahead in that regard.

And still, I wanna see the games Xbox has to offer, and I'm buying a Series X to experience the games they deliver, 'cause surely they're going to deliver good ones.

I've stated this before, and I have no issue admitting it, PlayStation has been my main console for around 24 years, but I certainly think that Xbox doing something different is not inherently bad, just different. And again, at the end of the day all that matters is if you like the proposal. If you don't, PS5 is there for you, and vice versa.

I will say every generation starts with cross-gen. And the more costly games takes to produce, the longer cross-gen'ing lasts.

MS is just making the best of the tide and riding to [V]ictory. :messenger_peace:

LoL are you for real? Sorry but no. In my previous post I have literally copy and pasted Jason Ronald own words from his article (but without BB code) and you are still saying I'm interpreting what he said with my own words. When it comes James Stanard tweet I have posted it without adding much besids what he already said (without any interpretation on my own).

Please dont even bother responding to my posts because you are trolling, and I dont want to listen to your own interpretations. Like I have said before, you are just random dude to me and I will rather trust Jason Ronald.
I am not trolling I basically explain each part of the argument while I give you proof of each of these.

Maybe you don't want to read what I wrote like child throwing a tantrum, but this random dude knows of
this topic more than you and at least is able to explain a feature without start a console war, sorry maybe the
next time you find a random guy who never use a game engine and there you can win the argument.

Exist things related to new consoles where I can say I am not sure (RT performance) or even I don't know (price)
and others we are I am sure of what I am talking about like this one for example.

I was referring mainly to the MS first party approach when talking about cross gen.

And that second phrase, well, is the kind of generic fanboy comment that makes me cringe. The victory should be us having new great games to play, not a company's numbers. But if that's what you're looking for, more power to you, by all means.

"We won't force you to upgrade to Xbox Series X at launch to play Xbox exclusives."

translation: I just want to let you know guys we don't have anything to offer at lunch.

Thank you Phil for clarifying I don't need XSX at lunch.

in reality I got PS5 & "PC" to play halo infinite at lunch so I am good.

Oh you're right! OMG!

It's 100GB/s, stacked by the 2.5x multiplier, which means 250GB/s!

/s, in case it wasn't obvious

Microsoft's repeated emphasis on backwards compatibility is extremely suspicious. I can maybe understand wanting to revisit Gen 6, since there were still a few drops of creativity and originality to be wrung out of the industry during that period, but what does Gen 7 have going on that's worth anyone's time?

By the time that era rolled around there were only like 5 different kinds of game left and you've been getting a new version of them every single year. It's not like this thing plays Game Cube or Dreamcast games. What kind of cultural pedigree does XBOX have outside the trailer park that could motivate any interest in it's "classic" back catolog?

It's good PR and it helps keep gamers in the eco-system. Also, if people bought a good amount of digital 360 games and then upgraded to PS4 instead, on Series X they will be able to play a lot of those digital 360 games again with no problem. Also, since all games are available in the online store (barring them being de-listed since then) it's more games available to buy on the system which is always a plus.

There's also the additional fact that nostalgia is a hell of a drug, just look at how many people have been clamoring for remasters of Fallout 3, New Vegas, The Mass Effect Trilogy, older COD games and various other games. Being able to see many older 360 games still available for sale being listed for both 360 and Xbox One is a pretty powerful asset, and as nostalgia grows for that generation's games, it will only be more advantageous

I'm pulling this straight out my ass, but I feel like we'll see PS5 price and preorders within a day either way of the XBox show next week to pull the wind out of their sails. We're in the home stretch so it feels like the marketing engines are getting started. So it wouldn't surprise me.

I mean, that's kind of the point... if you are playing the game on PC you're still in their eco-system and still giving them money. Xbox is no longer just the console, it's their entire gaming division

My gosh, lol. Translation; you weren't getting one in the first place.
Thanks for clarifying you just want attention though.

The we can call it a tie, because Xbox fans doubt everything Cerny says and totally believe the Xbox guy.
Fair enough, I'm tired of this war so I can offer truce to all of you PS fans but my terms are as fallows
- you guys must accept both consoles are equall and will offer similar gaming experience
- I dont want to read from any of you guys PS5 games will look like next gen compared to XSX without any evidence to support such bold claim.

It's really about games to me I ditched xbox one because of the lacking of exclusives that interest me, PS brand never disappointed me since PS1 nintendo in other hand they had games that I really enjoy new and old brought back resmaster, remake etc. but that's what frustrating me with MS brand they lie not once more than than once it's sad to see people still falls for it.

Fair enough, I'm tired of this war so I can offer truce to all of you PS fans but my terms are as fallows

But who doesn't accept this? When we speculate (and this thread is here for that) that with all the hardware optimization of the PS5 it could be on par with XSX, you have a horde of MS fanboy slapping us in face 12 Tf, VA, Mesh sahder and etc...

- I dont want to read from any of you guys PS5 games will look like next gen compared to XSX without any evidence to support such bold claim.

That's pure fact for now (till 23rd july) cause first event of gameplay for XSX game was weird and awful (no gameplay at all and indie games with poor graphics) when on the other side you have game like Ratchet, Spiderman, Horizon 2, GT7, etc...

What people are not understanding about SFS:

1) The 1/3 of the texture is not always, is not a standard, not every texture can be cut before putting it inside the GPU. For context, I will leave the comment directly from the Xbox page as you can see this will vary game to game, and things like enemies textures because the enemies can move very quickly will need to be stored immediately in the GPU, because in those cases you will always use the 100% of the texture, compared to other objects that because of the distance or because they are big and static you don't need the whole texture than you can use 1/3 of the texture data.

"Through specialized hardware added to the Xbox One X, we were able to analyze texture memory usage by the GPU and we discovered that the GPU often accesses less than 1/3 of the texture data required to be loaded in memory."

This is the reason why the 12GB is just a stupid thing to say, first, the 1/3 MULTIPLIER is different per texture, for many textures you still need the 100%, for other 80%, for others, 59%, etc, etc. So the multiplier for each one of those will vary, 2.5x, 1.5, 1x

2) SFS has something like LOD for textures, this will help to improve loading times, but I do not expect things like fast travel to be able to be used with this, because this has the same disadvantages of LOD if the user is going to fast than the user will see the popping of the new "texture" with more resolution while is moving fast through the world.

"Game textures are optimized at differing levels of detail and resolution, called mipmaps, and can be used during rendering based on how close or far away an object is from the player."

Finally,

- The 2.5X is applied after the theoretical maximum of 6GB/s...
- Not every texture can use this tech, enemies, and things that move quickly in the scene will need to 100% of the texture because 100% of the texture is always used.
- We will need to wait until the final release to see how well this low-resolution textures work with fast movement, which is essentially what PS5 is trying to archive with its SSD as we saw in the SpiderMan demo.
- And now I have a question, does this 2.5 multiplier is the calculation between the low-resolution texture + the 1/3 parts of the texture that often needs to send to the GPU, or is just part of the 1/3 texture. The documentation is not very clear respecting that.

I'm 99.999% certain that the 2.5x can't be added after the theoretical 6GB/s, because they only get to that number by unziping the BCpack files to BCn files in memory.

*although as a side issue it seems (IMO but might be wrong) like that theoretical 6GB/s max comes from the mention of XsX decompression unit using 10% of a 3.8GHz core and a 128bit interface, either 4x32bit channels for the SSD or the asymmetric memory split (CPU only in this case, and has 6 channels at 32bit IIRC) so AVX2 256 bit copying on Zen2 might be affected and downgraded to 128bit when using the 6GB of CPU setup, rather than the new 256bit mode when using the 10GB. Either way, 3.8 x 0.1 x 128 /8 = 6.08GB/s which seems a bit too coincidental (IMO).

That is possibly the interesting point about SFS. It probably means they have to stream BCn (unzipped on the disk) directly to get that 2.5x on the 2.4GB/s (raw) or using BCpack, unzip in RAM (getting a different 2-3x benefit) and abandon steaming, to save on redundant texturing and shading. If the XsX uses the 6GB and 10GB as discrete pools like RAM and VRAM, then it could multiply (in comparison to PC RAM/VRAM) but that is already orders inferior to unified RAM that the PS5 setup has, and so isn't a benefit in context to the PS5 IO solution.

When you have a huge pre existing fanbase that blindly defends everything they do then yes,

That's just console warring at this point

If Sony were to screw up badly with the PS5 and charge a huge amount for it they will lose customers. That's why it's important for them to launch the system right at a good price.

They already had issues with a 599$ console in the past so they won't repeat that mistake again.

Truth is both consoles will cost around the same with the DE either matching the XSX or undercutting it. Probably the latter though since Sony did talk about transitioning people over quickly. It's impossible to do that with a really high price because theres a limit to what people will spend on a console.

You call this PR shite? Creating the best possible console eco-system. Ok... Games are coming in exactly 1 week, I'm happy that they at least also keep pushing for getting the best possible value to customers. Sony has nothing that even comes close to this. If Microsoft delivers when it comes to games, they are so far ahead. But I agree that that's a big IF looking back at past-gen.

Man you'll be disappointed if you think they will show mindblowing games and graphics.. they will not.. they will show gameplay of crosgen games (hallo will be the main star, Forza also) running at 60 FPS, maybe some at 120 FPS and will sell that as the next gen differentiator... not graphics but responsiveness and felling.. you'll see..

Of course, is likely, they also show one or two trailers of "Engine footage" or "Xbox x representative" stuff to come in the future without date or further information that will be very impressive but likely just smoke & mirrors to impress their audience..

The main course will be underwhelming from graphics perspective... if not I'll be hear eating the crow as my main course :messenger_grinning_sweat:

None of the idiots on there have any credibility, them talking shit is par for the course. The trouble is actually go to/reliable sites like IGN lapping and spreading the messaging as designated by the bosses. I mean look at this. Even some of the ardent fanboys will roll their eyes but it's all okay to them because Phil said so.

Dealer, ColtEastWood, TimDog and RandalThor have about as much credibility as Klobrille does. That's to say, absolute zero. They don't have insider sources at all and never did, their goal is to speak as positively about their plastic box of choice as they possibly can, this gives them attention and as a result they get invited to special Xbox events for free. They were never credible, but have a cult following that listens to every damn thing they say or preach, even if that something doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I wouldn't even give any attention to these clowns, they're not worth the effort. Colt blocked me on Twitter after I put him in his place. I'll assume the others have similar behavior patterns.

Here's a link where a Microsoft engineer specifically says they have texture filters on hardware. So Sampler Feedback Streaming is even better than Sampler Feedback (DX12 Ultimate feature) which on it's own is better than PRT (claimed here and also said by that engineer in the tweet.)

It's not confusing at all, only for people that are trying to deliberately question everything Microsoft is saying really...
SF contains two basic parts:
Sampler feedback is one feature with two distinct usage scenarios: streaming and texture-space shading.
Source the same document you shared.

And yes is the same API:

Iq5rjOF.jpg

That is why is bad idea pretend to be an engineer or at least one competent as any should has the ability to read
the documentation from an API even if is not his area.

1 more week, I've got pretty high hopes :)

Kensama dont worry, I'm against violence so I'm not going to slap PS fans in the face even if 12TF will show it's power 😉.

Well, these indie and third party games were indeed embarrassing, but that was to be expected, when the star of the show is AC game. I'm however sure MS first party studios will deliver.

Dealer has very interesting guests on his shows inlucluding people who build XSX, so I'm sure he knows more than people are willing to admit. Often he talks about XSX details before anyone else and later on MS confirms his inside knowledge with official statements. He knows many people from MS for sure and therefore is more credible in my book than some insiders here who were posting fairy tales about 13TF PS5 or The Order 2 gameplay.

I can get on with that. The rest, not so much. But let's not pretend dealer knows anything about Computer architecture to talk about it. He gets what he gets from talking to these individuals, but when he tries to throw nonsense relating to things he knows jack about that's when he crosses the line. I'll say he passes with regards to the things he discusses with engineers but for anything else, he either makes wild assumptions or pulls things out from where the sun doesn't shine. Decent with certain things? Yeah. Credible? No, not even close.

I agree. Yes there will be cross-generation games but I'm sure MS knows people want and will focus on next-gen capabilities and demos. I expect to be very impressed with Halo- Infinite as an example and I bet there will be at least a couple unexpected things shown to get people excited as well. Particularly interested to see the use of RT on titles like Halo. Should be cool!

Did you see that podcast that some one linked today, a few pages back, with the people talking about the new spider-man game

If Dealer wants some credibility outside of his base he should address his contributors absurd claims.

Dealer is a smart guy but he should have a care of duty to his followers, he is letting people spread ridiculous fud on this podcasts, he should know better.

Yes I saw it and I dont agree with his conclusions in THIS PARTICULAR podcast.

I'm pulling this straight out my ass, but I feel like we'll see PS5 price and preorders within a day either way of the XBox show next week to pull the wind out of their sails. We're in the home stretch so it feels like the marketing engines are getting started. So it wouldn't surprise me.

Yeah, I would think this is possible too. The only thing is...I think they need to answer more questions and give more details of how PS5 works and what it offers, including about backwards compatibility. I would THINK they would have to talk about this stuff to get people more excited and THEN open pre-orders. But...the clock is ticking. At this point, things have been so thrown off by the pandemic that just about anything feels possible. So we'll see!

Agreed, let the games do the talking from 23rd on.

I usee to follow these individuals quite closely and enjoyed their content, however recently their collective demeanour has became really vindictive and posses an aire of superiority.
These characters will condescending talk about not worshipping plastic boxes and then engage in the same toxic behaviour.
They spread lies and misinformation, and then claim ignorance. But what's worse, is that higher ups at Microsoft condone this behaviour and actively participate in their channels. I do believe they have contacts in the industry which provide them with information. But in some cases the content they create lacks objectivity and is akin to propaganda.

Looks like Phil reset the clock

"You won't be forced into the next generation."

Well, for the first two years. I don't get it. Either support Xbox One for all of next gen or go balls to the wall and have exclusives day one. This whole "we're pro cosumer and support the whole userbase until we don't" mantra is bizarre.

Xbox One has over 4000 games available. Time to move on.

It's becoming a service, the only reason there won't be an Xbox app on Switch and PlayStation is because Nintendo and Sony won't let it in.

Yeah basically. I'm not entirely certain how successful it'll be but I am most definitely interested in seeing where it goes. Even if you're a diehard Playstation fan, you can't deny that what Xbox is doing is interesting and is also very high risk high reward.

Either way, I still forsee the consoles of Series X and Lockhart being key to introducing the eco-system for a while now
