Next Generation returns

It seems like some of the people behind the old Next Generation magazine and Web site are involved in a new incarnation of Next Generation, but only as a Web site this time.

http://www.next-gen.biz

Judging from what is on the site now, it appears to be targeting video game industry professionals, rather than consumer.

Awesome! Had a subscription for many years.. I think I have all my old issues boxed up in a closet since I couldnt bare to see them go.

Next Gen was awesome, the whole mag had a very mature look to it with high res pages and semi-hard covers. Although iirc the quality of the mag went down quite a bit right before its end.

That's good news, the potential to be a great website is there...the magazine market right now is owned by EGM, even if Next Gen was still around they are way to many loyals to out do them, and GamePro is like PS2, full with blind ass zombies who know nothing outside of the videogame bizness except Game FAQs and GamePro :D

I remember Next-Gen being way too spec-y and rambly about the business side...bring back GameFan! :(
They tried that, and it didn't work well...Gamer's Republic was cool...but once again they couldn't get it done.

Not to derail the topic, but this thread makes me think of how many old videogame mags I have in my closet. Its probably over 500...

And yeah, GameFan was great.

Terry Wolfinger=best covers evar.

Anybody else get their videogame forum start on the Next Gen forums? (Raises hand). I
personally blame those boards for countless hours of lost work. I have to give my props to
the folks who actually moderated those things. Didn't they have to approve each and every
post? Who here remembers?

Next Gen was a great and very high quality mag. It got alil to techy for me from time to time but I still really liked it.

Anyone use to visit their old website back in the day? They had a message forum on there where people could give opinions and make comments about articles interviews ect. or talk to game designers and they would pick a couple to post on the front page every week. Back in 98-99 I remember writing a message about how game makers had no damn idea what gamers really wanted and that we should be telling them how to make their games because we are the ones who pay their checks. Worded way more eloquently of-course they put it on the front page but what I didn't expect was a flood of emails and messages from pissed off game designers telling me and those who agreed with me to shove it and just play the damn games lol. That created an unintentional rivalry between gamers and designers that heated up to the point where the site had to close down for a couple weeks.

I wonder if any of the former site editors or webmasters remember the incident.

BTW, I absolutely without a doubt thought NG was the best game magazine to grace the planet even slightly better than the notoriously stacked Game Fan magazine. I still have that issue where they showed a cracked face of Mario on the front cover asking if Nintendo was dead or something like that. They originated the whole "Nintend**med" phenomenom. :lol

Getr done! Next Gen is the best. I subscribed ever since the summer of 96 till the end and read almost every single page. I only subscribe to EGM now and it sucks. I hardly ever read it. I hope the online NG is as good as the old, because I sure miss the good ol days!

The biggest problem with NG was the following games getting 4 stars instead of 5:Perfect Dark, Chrono Cross, Tekken Tag, Jet Grind Radio, and GTA III

i had their mgs2 demo issue. looked like snake was holding a digital camera on the cover...atleast, thats what i remember thinking it was.

Next Generation rocked.

The quality went down a bit after it was renamed Next Gen but still was a favorite.

Gamefan was good too.

Basically the two mags I would get every month.

I am enjoying Edge since B&N started to carry it. Plan to grab it every month until they stop carrying it.

Next Gen rocks. One of my favorite issues was their cover on Super Mario 64 whereby they declared it the 'Greatest Game Of All Time' and a mere few pages later listed 10 reasons why the N64 will fail (and also 20 reasons why it would succeed). In hindsight, some of those reasons (mostly the Nintendo-are-doomed ones) were fairly accurate (questionable Deamteam, cartridges, 3rd party support, etc). I also recall the number one reason why it would succeed; the brilliance of Mario 64. Paraphrased they wrote, “We’d all buy it [N64] just to play this one game, wouldn’t you?”

Ah, memories.

Is this the staff from the first two kick-ass years of Next Gen or the staff from the last two EGM-wannabe years of Next Gen? If it's the former, I'm excited. If it's the latter, who the fuck cares.

The first year was really great.

First issue covered the Japanese launches of Saturn and Playstation.

Good tech articles with some nice sexy pics of the consoles laid bare.

I remember the Atari Jaguar issue with the Sam Tramiel Interview.

Just not alot of bullshit in that mag.

HOLY FUCK YEAH!

old things do return!

NEXT GENERATION was awesome. 1995-2000 (or something like that)

and NEXT GENERATION ONLINE was the best website for game in the mid-late 1999s.

first to report on Black Belt & Dural, which lead to Dreamcast

If by technical you mean that it didn't have any lame ass jokes, shitty comics and ramblings about how every newly announced game was going to rock the world, then yeah, I guess maybe it was technical. Serious is the better way I would describe it.

Well, it was too spec-y and businessy for me, and that stuff doesn't mean crap to me. So yeah whatever, yourself.

Nowhere am I implying OH GOD NO, DON'T COME BACK.

I loved Next Generation... the first issue I ever read was 'Is Nintendo Breaking Up?' which analyzed the first year or so of the N64. Before reading that article, the only mag I subscribed to was Nintendo Power. Needless to say, I cancelled NP and subscribed to NG.

I just hope the 'return of NG' isn't just a cosmetic return.

I remember the Sam Tramiel article. He made me mad with his comments about how PlayStation was only "a little, little bit" more powerful than Jaguar. So I wrote in after that story and my letter got printed an issue or two later. Then some dude wrote in slagging me the issue after that!

Funtimes. :)

You never said anything directly, but we can read between the lines. But Spectral Glider already put it best with:

I'm gonna dig through my old Next Gen's and read that. ;)

That's some great news. Nice to see Colin Cambell is running the site again! I used to have that site as my homepage where I got all of my gaming news.

.. And Next Generation magazine jumped the shark when they switched their cover from that lovely 'Wired' matte finish to the crummy glossy finish of most magazines.

What're you doing at GAF if the business and spec side of games doesnt interest you at all?
