I've been here on GAF for a long time. I've taken long, long periods of time off where I went years without even visiting. Then there's times where I visit and lurking a bit, but not often. But times like this, while not a heavy poster anymore, they make me post several times times day. From what I've heard about ResetERA, I'm kinda glad it's imploding.

I think some of you are way too involved in believing most of Resetera belong to some shitty woke "community".

You'll see "communities" leave, and it won't kill the forum. Most of the people there don't want to be a part of some weird community, aren't THAT woke, etc.

Nope, but those who dictate the party line there are the exact line of folks that also land on the news for being so brave and inclusive and all these other meaningless buzzwords.

And some of them are/were ERA staff. Their desire for inclusivity and diversity was not only a means to an end, its actually part of the agenda, par the MOBA Network statement.

We are talking about a discussion platform for games. You know, which games you enjoy, and such.

If the focus isn't that first, but buzzwords as primary, you can tell what this MOBA move will do to the community there.

A lot of the biggest psychos on Resetera are actually just trolls too.

Poor trolls aswell, because they could have had a slice of that 4.5 million if they actually trolled well and got on a moderator or even admin position.

So all that trolling and moderating is just unpaid wasted time.... and you still get banned anyway.

I guess thousands of people like being sadistic or something? I can't imagine anyone enjoys being forum whipped the way ERA does to its users.

I would have seen it as work, yeah. It becomes a job and one has a responsibility to that position if you're being paid to work. It becomes real taxing to mod once a place gets over a certain size and how taxing it is on someone grows with that increase. You need to be able to disconnect and walk away sometimes but there's not as much room for that in a job and your livelihood could potential be on the line. That's why I said it's crossing the streams too much. Mind you, that's just my personal feelings on the potential of working full time as a moderate specifically. Work places vary wildly and maybe it would have been a super chill job but my personal health and interest in hobbies comes first, which is why I never considered it.

I'm a mod on two forums of about 10k users and you really need to let go things and never take it personally for sure.

Why am I not surprised to see ERA owners sell out their own community?
The bitter irony in seeing the self professed paragons of social justice huckstering their carefully curated safe spaces to the next best bidder.

Where are all their high flying principles now?
They followed the pied piper and now it is time to pay the bill. They have been used and now that their usefulness has worn out they are being traded like worthless cattle to a faceless online advertisement company.

RockPaperShotgun closed their forums this month, crushing yet another community under the uncaring heels of revenue optimization with tacit agreement from their woke overlords. A once thriving community hollowed out by social justice zealots and another cozy corner of the net destroyed by these bitter c*nts. How much of a financial burden could such a simple little forum really have been? I'd wager not a whole lot. For all the virtue signaling, they left their own communities hang out to dry in order to squeeze just a little bit more money out of their brand.

Say what you want about EviLore , but I'm sure he could have cashed out a long time ago. The fact that he didn't, is testament to his commitment to this place. I know we haven't always seen eye to eye lately, but the fact that you still keep the lights on after all these years is something that I can respect greatly.

Cerium became the sole owner years ago, the initial group ownership didn't last long.

It all sounds like a lot of money.. but someone said there are 45 moderators... a big forum is enough to make a small number of people a real income, not the dozens it takes to moderate.

As someone with mental health issues, it's usually not deflecting the complaints but to make sure that others are aware that you're anormal. Bragging about it is stupid as heck though as the oppression olympics.

That's honestly an interesting and insightful take. So you wouldn't advocate mods getting paid as lines blur at the seams of hobby and work. But by the same token wouldn't being paid as a moderate facilitate a better support system that also offers more stability? I'm pretty oblivious to how things operate as a moderator, but I also find it to be an interesting topic since it's been mentioned here and at resetera. The idea that a moderator should be paid sounds farfetched to me on a surface level because in most cases they're born through an existing community, but under the surface lies an entirely different story in terms of what they go through to maintain said community.

I'm talking about a specific scenario though, not any random person letting people know about mental health issues.

I sometimes let people know I'm a mental case to explain my behavior (while the endlessly adjusted cocktails of medicines I sometime forget to take do their best to regulate said behavior), but I'm not doing so to what are essentially "customers" while performing what is essentially "a job."

I give them leeway in this scenario because they are volunteers... nobody is paying to post on resetera either, so that's why I use customer in scare quotes, but I've seen this in scenarios that do involve people in real jobs dealing with real paying customers as well. I'm not suggesting it's purposeful or malicious either, but a defense mechanism. And they do get outpourings of support as well, and they don't have to actively be thinking they'll get that for it not to be subconsciously part of the reason they mention it.. and that outpouring of support tactically makes anyone complaining look like an asshole. In this scenario though.. Cerium.. well.. he is getting paid.. and whether purposeful or subconscious, his mention of his health has an obvious effect, or potential effect.. he can claim that it's too draining on his health to deal with the complaints.

If a bit of pity helps someone's mental health.. then.. I'm all for it either way. That is in fact more important than whining about some forum you don't actually need to be posting on. But then I might ask, why are you choosing to volunteer at some vacuous gaming forum in the first place?

Same, I lurked for a few years, then I posted somewhat regularly. I was a neo-member for the longest.

Took probably 4 years off and came back within the last 2 years I think. It's a fun place to be. The hype train threads aren't as entertaining as they used to be but it's just something to aspire to.
