Nexus 7 |OT| Google's $199 7-inch tablet by Asus

With all these rumors and things about everywhere being sold-out of Nexus units, I'm wondering if I can turn a profit on this thing after all...probably will just return it though.

Impressions from an iPad 2 owner:

-Build quality and size are nice. No creaks or dead pixels here. Browsing in portrait is fine but landscape is pretty useless and squished at this size.
-Typing is more difficult than the iPad but this could probably be fixed through swift key.
-Seems like it takes more scrolling To get through a page (and no snap to top gesture??).
-Screen is very clear.
-Notifications are a lot nicer than iOS.
-I'm missing the tablet versions of apps like flip board and Twitter- hopefully they'll be supported in the near future.

I mainly use my iPad for browsing so over the next week I'll probably decide in keeping it and selling my iPad and kindle.

Yeah, flipboard is a mess. On iPad, there's usually like 3-5 stories on each page and it takes 2 pages or flips at least to find something I want to read. On Nexus 7, that's 6-10 flips to get to something I want to read. It's a chore.

I've been using Currents instead of Flipboard and I'm liking it a lot. The only downside to it is the lack of widget.

That's an extremely misleading ad. I love this thing, but the reliance on wi-fi would make it terrible for the outdoors.

Of course, they try to qualify it at the end by saying, "DERP! They were outside their house all along!" but it still kind of bothers me.
I found it misleading too. The house at the end doesn't excuse showing all this stuff that suggests net connectivity.

I don't understand why the ad is misleading...even if they weren't in a backyard, it takes 2 taps on a screen to tether to a device that has 3G/4G. It's not like anywhere you would bring your tablet, you wouldn't also have your phone with you. And if for some reason your phone has no 3G/4G access, well then a hypothetical 3G/4G N7 wouldn't have access either.

Unless I'm misunderstanding?

So how's the keyboard feel on a 7-inch tablet? Comfortable to type on? That's what I'm really interested in with the form factor since whenever I've tried out big phones (four inches plus) it's my main problem.

You think an older person with little understanding of technology would be thrilled about going to purchase the camping commercial tablet and finding out it does no such thing without a net enabled smartphone and a hotspot app? You don't understand that. You're kinda out of touch man

No issues so far here. Keyboard feels just right, and I usually have a lot of issues typing on my iPhone.

You can also use speak to text as well. Works great!

I saw a couple demos of the speech to text, great to hear that it actually works well day to day.

Best touch keyboard experience I've had so far has been the split keyboard on the iPad, and it seems like that key size would probably be pretty close to the Nexus 7's keyboard. Honestly a good tablet keyboard is almost a good enough reason to get one for me, and the form factor is really improving. Hopefully Android starts getting more in the way of tablet-optimised apps, that's the big thing that's stopped me from looking at this more seriously.

I ordered mine on July 17, when do you think it'd ship? I'm traveling for work in about two weeks, was hoping I would have it by then.

I ordered my on the 4th and I am still hoping mine will ship this week.... maybe I should call to cancel it and maybe they will ship it... lol :(

Dang I kinda miss mines already since I returned it for a full refund last Thursday at gamestop

Dat 7" screen and battery life

But I'm more inclned to wait now for the nexus 10 or nexus 7 2.0 now.

Ditto, I'm really enjoying the layout and the ability to add in any RSS feed.
Come to think of it, quite a few apps I've installed don't seem to have widgets.

What would a 'Nexus 7 2.0' have that this one doesn't that would change your mind?

I love mine and I won't part with it for the world, but it needs a MicroSD slot, USB OTG and HDMI. This is the first and last tablet I buy without these options. MicroSD gives you breathing space, USB OTG gives you accessories and access to large amounts of data, and HDMI gives you media options.

It's been a laptop replacement since last week and serves a real purpose for me the way it is, but due to the above, it does not at all qualify as a media device.

The way it is, it's a net, pdf, and youtube replacement, which is honestly 99% of my needs for a tablet. Also, it's a great way to see local cable listings without the slow onscreen cable service guide button. The form factor, speed, picture quality and battery are all there. As my first tablet, that's fine. Going forward, it's a deal buster.

Still waiting for a few things to make this device perfect...

I need:

  • Chameleon Launcher
  • A good solid case/stand
  • More tablet apps

Really makes me want to get back into Android dev to start an app. There's definitely a market for good tablet apps.

It's gotta be much lighter and far less bulky in the back, ethereal light or at least as light as a phone but with a 7" 10" of course where not there yet...

maybe a couple of generations away in tablet tech

a major advancement in battery tech 12-24 hr actual usage time battery life.

a solar, motion, and or kinetic charger built in ?

of course what I want is all pie in the sky stuff atm

realistically it's Nexus 7 5.0 or somewhere down the line.

but this is a great start but there is much much room to improve.

So nothing specific to this tablet then. You just aren't happy with current tablet technology.

We are nowhere near close to any of that, unfortunately.

I just saw that the 16gb version is no longer available on Google play. High demand I suppose. I might end up selling mine if I can make at least $50 and then rebuy it once it's available again. Mine should arrive tomorrow.

Yeah it was a nice tablet, the first one I've decided to purchase.
Only the weight, bulk, and hardware defects bothered me enough to return it, it just wasn't ready yet at least imo

but I can see apple hitting my checklist in dream tablet features first before anyone else hence they control their vision of the hardware and software.

but for now I'm just gonna be using my laptop like everyone else for most things.

I always hate when I'm out of data range and can't view offline content, play a board game, use my compass or screen as a flashlight.

Is it currently impossible to contact Google Play customer support? Every path through their web site help tree leads to this page:

http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/request.py?hl=en&contact_type=contact_policy

That page has no link to "talk to a specialist". I'm guessing it used to be a link but it's been deactivated.

I'm trying to ask about a problem with an e-book I bought (it's disappeared from the site and "My Orders" list). There doesn't seem to be any way to contact anyone about this problem. Is Amazon support this bad? I'm not very fond of Amazon but I bet they're probably better than this.

Weird, just last week, there was a page you could get where you can file a ticket and they would call you to discuss it. That links seems to just loop you around now.

This number is for Nexus support but there might be options in there that can help you. Im not sure:
1-888-48-NEXUS

That's perfect. Thanks for the link.
I thought so too. I want something that doesnt cover the front so much and that looks like it does the trick.

Anyone know if JustinTv works on nexus 7? I know the app hasn't been updated in forever but what about native support? Gotta watch my FGC stream while laying on the couch.

So I'm thinking about buying one of these in the near future. I'd really only use it for:

web browsing
comixology
fantasy football tracking/updating rosters (through NFL.com).

Is this device deficient in any of those areas? I've not yet used comixology but it'd be a big deal for me, especially if it's account based and I can access stuff from the tablet or desktop at will.

Web browsing is great. Its better than a phone for sure but not quite as good as a PC mainly because of typing. Bear in mind that Jellybean doesnt support Flash so if you visit a lot of flash based sites, youll run into issues. There are ways around this apparently but I dont use Flash enough to care.

Comixology is account based. As long as youre logged in, anything you buy on your PC can be accessed from the tablet and vice versa. I just bought the first 5 issues of Y:The Last Man on the tablet yesterday and logged into my PC account today and there they were. That side worked like a charm.

The only problem I have with it is that any comic I bought on PC doesnt show up in my tablet library until I search for the comic on the store and tap the download button. It detects anything and everything I own but just doesnt add it to my library. No idea if this is a glitch or just the way it is.

Ive also seen some people mention a glitch where you have to quit the app and come back but I havent run into that yet.

The other thing to consider is screen size. 7 inches is still small compared to regular comic book size but I dont find it too bad. Its pretty much the bare minimum. Any smaller and I would have problems. I have also have shitty eyesight so I dont know how it would be for anyone with better (or worse) vision.

Outside of gaf and the fantasy football stuff I probably would be content with whatever else worked. I think there is an android app as well for football stuff so I should be golden.

Thanks for the info Salaadin.

they've reused this case design since the original iPad, and I'm a huge fan of it. the case will add some bulk to the device, but it's sound protection against drops and the built-in stand functionality works great.

hopefully this version actually comes with the 'smart cover' functionality included.

The twitch.TV app does which has all Justin streams if you search. The Justin app just broadcasts. Plus it doesn't work on nexus 7 right now.

Note that not all streams are high quality.

Running to Gamestop after work to pick up that stand. Looks nice, and it'll go great on my desk.

MAME emulator, anyone have any recommendations?

A few days in now havent had any hardware issues thankfully (creaks, dead pixels) this was definitely a good buy for me.

Now I need some recommendations from you guys regarding reading and readers as that is what I want to use it for the most. I would prefer some 'Google books' kind of app for Pdf's and Rtf is there something similar in the play store?

What I got so far is kindle, and a few comic books apps (dc,marvel and dh) but I need something for my own pdfs and word docs

Also are there any other 'flipboard/currents style' apps out there?
