NFL noob here: why was electing to kick a mistake? I don't understand what went on there. Or is it just a case that the captain sent against what his team wanted?
It was a (fairly unnecessary) risk. If they'd missed, they'd give Carolina great field position with only a 4 point lead. If you punt, you pin them deep.
For that matter, even if you make the FG you have to kick off, which probably gets them better field position than your punt.
Basically it's one of those decisions you should probably consult the probably graph for.
