Mario Williams and Julius Peppers on opposite ends of the dline?

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/feat...o.com/nfl/features/rumors?date=20120312#14480

Impending free agent DE/OLB Mario Williams has been speculatively shipped a lot of places thus far this offseason, which makes sense given the fact that most teams could use an extra pass-rusher, and he's proven to be effective in multiple defensive fronts. One team that has remained somewhere near the forefront of all the rumors is the club that spent big on a player at the same position just two offseasons ago, the Chicago Bears. So is it sensible to lay out another huge deal for Williams when Julius Peppers is already in town? Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune believes that it is.

"It's true the Bears would have an inordinate investment in their defensive ends if they signed Williams. But collecting pass-rushers didn't hurt the Super Bowl champion Giants. The Lions have quite a group, too. As the subjects of the A&E series 'Hoarders' might attest, you can't have too much of a good thing -- especially pass-rushers, and especially given the defensive and team philosophies the Bears subscribe to. A defensive end's value is much greater than that of a wide receiver to the Bears. It's true a great quarterback can make his receivers better. On the other side of the ball, it's the end who makes his teammates better. Many teams have won big without star receivers. Few have won without a pass rush that keeps quarterbacks up at night and down during games."

With limited resources -- both in a salary cap sense and an actual cash sense -- is it more important for the Bears to sign Williams or target a player like Vincent Jackson that could finally give them a legitimate No. 1 WR threat? We'll find out soon enough whether the answer is one of the two or neither.

It is crazy that it seems like Manning is going to the Texans. That will be by far the best team he has ever played for. If he is healthy at all the SB is theirs to lose.

About the Skins and Boys getting punished, all the teams were told by the league not to use the uncapped year as a way to fix upcoming cap problems. Those teams cut high salaried players so that the money they were owed would count in the uncapped year. It was a clear attempt by those teams to circumvent the cap.

uh this hasn't been said anywhere. only mention i've even seen of it was from denver post article.

Clearing up room for Mario?

heh heh

Seriously, I have no freaking clue. Texans NEVER talk about this stuff or let it get out.

You son of..., if you do get him I hope you blow out the Titans over and again. Things were going nice and smooth until Adams decided to jump in. Guaranteed money just went up, probably doubled from him interfering.

Well obviously they do.
Didnt "leak". Winston just did a twitter announvement and press release. Said the team approached him and felt asking him to take a pay cut was disrespectful so would just release him. He was scheduled to make 6.5 million this year.

Classy move on the Texans part. Rashaard Butler will probably step into his place, he played well while Brown was out at LT. Free's p money to resign Myers at center, more important piece of that o line.

With the Titans and Texans jumping in on the Peyton Manning sweepstakes I wonder if he will still sign tomorrow..

I'm curious myself. One clue we might get is if a team starts signing his old teammates. If Saturday and Wayne sign somewhere tomorrow, I don't think it would be surprising if Manning signed there some time later or around the same time.

So its classy to pretend to not show interest in someone, then show interest in them?

There is ZERO confirmation the Texans have actually contacted Peyton. Other than some Broncos beat writer in Denver.... I am thinking more that there may be a Mario signing announced tonight? I dunno

I've seen reports that hes not likely to sign a deal by tomorrow, sounds like he still has several teams to talk to?

He still hasn't talk to the Dolphins and now he will likely talk to the Titans and Texans, so yeah I'm not counting on him signing tomorrow but crazier things have happened.

Uh, dolphins were the first team he talked to, hes supposed to be talking to their HC, Joe Philbin, later in the week i think.

You guys are right. It is his first ban, but it's still going to be a long one. Scatology has always been completely unacceptable on this forum.

NFL-gaf mods are best mods. Thank heavens Wellie gave up the red.

And someone warn FMT.

Everytime I see DCX post, I will now think of this:

It used to make me think of BLarry. RIP

Even Larry's banning is depressing.

Well, it's a nice way to get a bit off-topic with people you "know" and not spam this thread.

Yeah. There were only 600 posts today while I was at work... Can't wait to see this 'off-topic' chat.

ESPN must be feeling like fucking idiots right now. First they say it looks like Miami is losing steam, and it looks like it'll be between Cards and Broncos, and now Peyton will be heading to Miami.

lol at Shefter.

Supposedly Sherman will be there, too.

Another "rumor" report breaking about the Bears and Mario Williams:

http://www.csnchicago.com/football-...e-to-land-DE-Mario-?blockID=668360&feedID=661

The Bears will go into the hours leading to the start of free agency considered around the league to be the favorite in the competition to sign defensive end Mario Williams away from the Houston Texans, CSNChicago.com has learned from a number of NFL sources.

No deal is done until it’s done and no formal offers can be extended before the official start of free agency at 3 p.m. And the exact shape of the market, like the NFL draft every year, is sometimes not apparent until it starts.

But the Bears have been expected to be prime players in free agency this year, have been in the past when they have identified target players, and they are seldom beaten to a player they covet.

I'd be ecstatic over this move, but Emery and Lovie better not forget about Cutler. He needs some player help too!

The owner of the Pittsburgh Power from the Arena Football League fired all 24 members of his team during a pregame meal at an Orlando-area Olive Garden.

With AFL players set to strike before the 2012 season opener, owner Matt Shaner reacted first, cutting his entire team hours before kickoff of a game against the Orlando Predators.

"Mid-statement, all the players got up and left," former Power center Beau Elliott told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Every player got up and left while he was still talking. There were 15 to 20 angry, large individuals."

The AFL Player's Association was calling for an increase in the $400 game checks paid to most players on each team. The union demanded a 300 percent increase in the minimum salary. AFL owners countered with a $100 raise.

Shaner told the newspaper that some players split from the union and returned to the team in time for Saturday night's game. Those who didn't were stuck in Orlando and forced to return to Pittsburgh on their own.

Members of the Predators were also released.

The game was still played, with unfilled roster spots being taken by replacement players, some of whom arrived to the arena minutes before kickoff. One backup quarterback switched teams before the game after getting "drafted" during a pregame selection. As a result, the season opener had the feeling of a pick-up game down by the local high school field.

The NFL Network broadcast the game live. Announcers reportedly couldn't identify a number of players.

Pittsburgh won 40-26, in front of more than 13,000 fans.

Other AFL teams played the same day with complete rosters.

Winston move is like out of nowhere. Better not be for some stupid reason like trying to retain Mario. >:

I was really hoping they would not fuck around with the oline this offseason.

Uh, dolphins were the first team he talked to, hes supposed to be talking to their HC, Joe Philbin, later in the week i think.

Really? Never heard anything about the phins talking to Manning first, eh must have missed it.

But yeah I'm glad the Phins are still in it, I thought we were out of it but now we're the favorites again? WTH is going on? Looks like people are just reporting out of their ass or something.

Deep LB draft, seems to be a bunch of speedy guys.

They also think they drafted a biomechanical marvel in Weatherspoon, lol.

Spoon was terrific this past year and basically became the leader of the defense. I'm excited to see how he continues to do.

Is ESPN being honest and forthright that with the skins and cowgirls being penalized it means more cap space for everyone else?

Also. So so so glad that stafford, suh, and Nate all restructured their contracts. Now for megatron's and we can sigh Tulloch. Sad to see Heller go, but for that much money...

Texans fans, temper your expectations

For the umpteenth time, Texans are not involved in Manning sweepstakes. Keep reading national reports saying they are, but they aren't.

Yes. 28 teams will get an additional 1.6 million in cap space. The only teams that won't are the Saints and the Raiders who are being penalized for the doing the same thing (front loading contracts) in 2010.

Everybody but the Raiders and the Saints. They're going to be getting about 2 million additional cap space each.

And the Raiders weren't penalized for front loading contracts, they were penalized for Jafatty. WHY!?

Well, I had no idea who he was, and the 49ers beat writer for the SacBee retweeted him, thus I mentioned it.

All good man. Seriously, the Texans dont let anything leak. They do boggle the mind though.....release Winston, who is considered one of the best RT's in the league yet Jacoby "I can field a punt!" Jones is STILL on the roster with a cap hit of 2.5 million.

Had no clue about Winston though. Well no one did....

Shows how great his "sources" are.

Man. If I had access to my gif collection right now......

Fuuuuuuuuucckkkkk yeaaaaaah!

Crazy rumor going round that NE is after Moss like the Saints and Niners. Dunno how that's supposed to work out, but he can't be worse than Ocho at this point.

I haven't kept up with the Saints/Raiders part of the story outside of them being penalized for 2010 "cap violations"...explain?
