Didn't Arians say they are going to keep Ellington on a pitch count?
A few things about Ellington..
During the season Arians expressed his belief that Ellington wasn't "an every down back", noting concerns about durability. He also had some bro-love with Mendenhall, blah, blah, about Ellington needing to earn his spot..Also said he was happy with the amount of work Ellington received which seemed to be around 12-15 touches a game.
End of season GM makes a statement saying in so many words, we're going with a RBBC. Mendenhall is a free agent and recently made a tweet saying he's considering retirement. Facts show Ellington being explosive, younger, and obviously led the league in YPC..Mendenhall may or may not be back, even if he doesn't retire and his YPC were very low..He looks done based on last year.
Two days after GM makes his comments, Arians said, "We'd like to build our offense around Ellington" and "he'll get more snaps/touches." Also, "I want to see him put on some weight", plus, "Ellington has already added 10 lbs in the offseason."
So the GM and Arians made a bit of contradictory statements regarding Ellington's role in the future....Never heard anything about a snap count for Ellington and I've followed him pretty closely.
Personally, I think IF Mendenhall doesn't come back, it's Ellington's job to lose..He'll get 15 rushes a game, plus 4-5 looks in the passing game...So not a sole RB1, but close..Numbers suggest he'll be a good candidate to get 1500 all-purpose yards..Shit..this year he had 1000 all purpose and that was with a part-time split and missing a game.
IF Mendenhall comes back that caps his ceiling but we should expect number similiar to this year with a slight bump...He'll get more work, but it won't be much mroe..
Vereen...I feel like we know he isn't an every down back..We know what he is at best...A good pass catching back who will occasionally have a big game on 10-12 carries...We've seen Vereen at his best and his best isn't as good as the best we've seen from Ellington..Plus we don't even know how good Ellington can truly be..
Verdict...Ellington will have a better year than Vereen, even if Mendenhall comes back..
