I think that's the most positive thing you've ever said about the Bears in however many years I've been posting here.

That's not true. We're getting to the point where I get serious for a bit so that I can go back and laugh at how right I was. Happens during pre-season, prior to the playoffs and before the draft. I even have a calendar reminder.

Also to be fair that isn't really a glowing endorsement of the Bears. I'm saying they'll get a wild card spot. Whoopie-de-dooooooo

So scrappy

Preseason means less than shit when determining a team's strength for the regular season unless a franchise player gets injured. Lions proved that once and for all in 08.

Seahawks were 4-0 in the preseason last year. They beat the Broncos 40-10 and then went on to beat them 43-8 in the Super Bowl. Preseason is everything!

You're right.

Detroit would have a fucking parade if the Lions get a playoff spot.

Shazier looked so good that it is hard to keep my expectations in check.

If he and Timmons can control the middle of the field like I expect, hope and demand that is going to free up other players to play more freely. People won't be able to just dink and dunk us to death. If Jones steps up and we get solid play from the secondary I can see the secondary being back.

A lot of Wheel of Time discussion in the last page. I feel like I am in a time machine and I am back in the late 90s!

The Steelers preseason is a good example of this. People complaining that Suisham kicks everything short, but Tomlin told him to do that so they could evaluate kickoffs. Complaints about the poor running game, yet agin Tomlin angled games toward running offense in the first game and passing in the second. Also, Le'Veon Bell has been purposely held out of practice and limited in games.

Just as an aside. I don't get the Hojo love. Anybody can pick up a fumble. Aside from that he's been invisible.

I went back and watched the special teams plays from the Packers Rams games looking for Sam. That's really the only way he will make the team and I was hoping he'd stand out. For the most part he was invisible, despite looking for him. That's not good news. I'm seeing some people with the "he had a sack he'll make the team!" garbage but I can't imagine that will make one bit of difference. 3rd - 19 against third string offensive line, you should quit football if you can't get to the QB as a pass rush specialist in that situation. Where he needs to shine is on ST and I don't think he is doing it. Hell, I don't think he was even out there on all of the kicks and punts.

He's not fast. Like at all. He has situational speed, mostly pass rushing. He also doesn't seem to be moving up the depth chart, which is the real indication of how coaches see a player.

Chip Kelly calls out rookie Marcus Smith:

This past Friday, the Eagles got Smith plenty of reps, as he registered 73 snaps against the New England Patriots. What the Eagles didn't get out of Smith's extended playing time was results.

"If you are going to play that many plays," Kelly said, "we are going to need more production out of you."

Smith, who also saw time on special teams, totaled one tackle, three quarterback hurries, and an alarming three missed tackles against the Patriots. The rookie played throughout the game, as he was out there with the starters and stayed in right up until the very end with the third-string unit.

Not sure I have ever seen a HC publicly call out a 1st round pick this quickly. I wonder if that was a Howie pick and Chip wasn't totally on board. Smith has looked terrible so far this preseason but everyone said he was a project coming out so this shouldn't be surprising.

Yeah, that's why they've tried him on returns, which itself is kind of a huge red flag. Seems like they've already conceded he does nothing to help the kick coverage teams.

I don't think anyone expected him to move up that depth chart, it's pretty stacked.

From NFL.com's Takeaways from Sunday's games..

It's too early to push the panic button with Eric Fisher in Kansas City. But it's fair for the Chiefs to be concerned about the No. 1 overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft. And it might not hurt to keep the button nearby.

Fisher has moved to his natural position of left tackle this season, replacing Branden Albert. That move was supposed to help solve a lot of Fisher's rookie problems, but he has struggled in both preseason games. Fisher was pushed around by Carolina's Greg Hardy and Alex Smith was hammered by Panthers role player Wes Horton after he beat Fisher. Hardy also got by Fisher to make a big tackle for loss, and Fisher was called for a holding penalty. He gave up a sack last week.

The normal caveats for small sample sizes apply. But Fisher didn't just struggle as a rookie; he was one of the worst starters in the NFL. The Football Outsiders Almanac noted he had more blown blocks per snap than any tackle in the league.

The Chiefs will be patient with Fisher because they have to be. They've invested too much. We just doubt Fisher would still be on the field if he was drafted in a different round.

1. It's too early to say whether Cam Newton trusts his surgically repaired ankle. Newton didn't cut it loose on scrambles Sunday because it's the preseason and he knows he needs to get his work done in the pocket. After a few errant throws and no production on his first three drives, Newton directed two straight touchdown marches.

2. Jonathan Stewart looked like his old self on those drives. At least the old self that was healthy, which hasn't been seen too often.

3. The Panthers wideouts weren't a problem, getting open against Kansas City's secondary. Rookie Kelvin Benjamin isn't a speedster, but he still gets open deep. He made two nice catches for 41 yards. Jason Avant drew a long pass interference penalty. Newton might need to rely on his cagey veterans (Avant and Jerricho Cotchery) to draw penalties to move the ball.

4. Both starting offensive lines struggled early, with Kansas City's re-formed group being particularly bad. Alex Smith played very well despite mediocre numbers (127 yards on 22 attempts), delivering a number of strong passes under duress. The Chiefs have shaky receivers and blocking. Smith should just take that money now.

5. With that said, Dwayne Bowe showed none of the struggles he's displayed in camp. He caught five passes for 62 yards in one half of work. Reserve Travis Kelce had a long score for the second straight week.

Trying to find a reason to boot Chris Carter.

Carter is actually getting pressure this preseason. Though I can't remember if he did that in previous years.

The depth chart comment was more against the "he got a sack" brigade, who often want to sign players to contracts based off beating grocery baggers and bellhops to the QB.

It really pops out on the statline and when you are watching the game.

But yeah causing fumbles is a lot less impressive than picking them up. But its a preseason game and all the preseason counts for is whether or not you make the team. Speaking of making the team it is obvious that Adams is not going to start. But are we going to keep him on the roster as a backup? I assume we will because of his draft position but I think we would could get someone off the street with the same production and they would cost less too...

I disagree with your assertion that anyone can pick up a fumble. How many offensive lineman and fat defensive players have we seen over the years who seem to be unable to fall onto the ball or pick it up?

I think it is safer to say that ALMOST anybody can pick up a fumble. :D

Don't be alarmed by your growing distaste and hatred of Tom Brady and the Patriots. Its part of the process.

Greg Hardy is pretty fucking good. Seems odd to proclaim BUST on a rookie for not being able to handle a top tier defensive linemen in your second professional game.

I haven't gone back and reviewed, but it sounded like he got pulled from the game for fucking up his contain responsibilities. If a fourth year guy can't do his job, put a young guy on the roster who has an excuse for not knowing his responsibilities. Begin the cycle, anew. Frankly, if Carter or Jones or So'oto are playing any meaningful snaps this fall, the defense is fucked. I'm in the 'keep the best special teamer' camp.

Detroit would have a fucking parade if the Lions get a playoff spot.

This team is built to win a Super Bowl now.

We have an elite QB getting into his prime, Megatron in his prime, Suh in his prime, one of the best offensive lines in the league and finally some other weapons alongside Megatron at WR.

The way I saw Stafford play in those first few drives against the Raiders just confirms it to me even more.

The latest projected roster for the Dolphins by James Walker (ESPN Dolphins guy) shows them keeping Brett Brackett as their third TE. Brackett is a journeyman type guy who was undrafted in 2011 and has bounced around from team to team since then. If they do end up going that route it would be pretty sad from a drafting point of view because it means Michael Egnew (3rd round pick in 2012) and Arthur Lynch (5th round pick in 2014) would both be gone. Egnew is understandable, he hasn't made any sort of impact since being drafted, but giving up on Lynch so soon for a known below average quantity seems stupid to me.

At the end of the day I think it'll be Charles Clay, Dion Sims, and Arthur Lynch as TE's for Miami. Lynch was drafted to be more of a blocking specialist and I don't really think they're going to get that from a guy like Brackett.

I'm not hard for Carter or anything; I just don't know how I feel for changing one body for another. I'd feel a lot better if Jones forced those fumbles instead of recovering them. Show me you've got something.

Brady would play a great Clint Eastwood or Charles Bronson in a Western.

? He's not a rookie, looked pretty terrible at RT last season before being moved to LT for this season:

Despite playing at left tackle during college, Fisher played on the right side during the 2013 season. He allowed seven sacks and 35 hurries. According to analysis by Pro Football Focus, his run-blocking grade of -6.5 ranked 55th out of 76 NFL tackles who played at least 25 percent of their team's snaps. His overall grade as a tackle ranked 70th. Despite Fisher's struggles during his rookie season, Chiefs general manager John Dorsey noted Fisher's potential and expressed confidence that he will develop into a good player.[8]

In March 2014, head coach Andy Reid announced that he wanted to move Fisher to the left tackle position for the upcoming 2014 season following the loss of Brandon Albert in free agency

I agree though, it's still way early in his career to be proclaiming bust.
