NFS:MW 360 version performance

...Well, it's not too hot. Some of you may have noticed that when you run the game in either 720p or 1080i, the game doesn't run very well. There is constant tearing and frame drops. It's worse than Sega Rally 2 DC. Seriously, the game will constantly attempt to get 60 fps and then every 2 seconds chop like crazy, all the while there is screen tearing, making for a very jarring experience. Especially for a racing game.

Just for shits, I tried the game in 480p, and while the game still suffers from frame drop and tearing, it is quite reduced in this mode. I was surprised at this, I guess EA didn't really bother optimizing for HD. And they have the nerve to put up an EA/HD logo when you run the game in 720p or 1080i. For shame.

So now I am quite enjoying NFS:MW on 360 in 480p and thought I would pass along to the gaf that you may also enjoy the game in 480p without having to suffer through the horrible performance of the game in HD.

On a similar note, Madden 360 has the same tearing problems, tearing all over the place which is horribly distracting, and makes the game look like shit.

thanks for the info....I thought it was basically unplayable at 720p and moved on to the next game.

I guess EA are not releasing quality game anymore, tis a sad day when such an event transpires as I used to have so much faith in them over the years. Now I will cry another tear as EA turns in just one of those companys that are hungry after my money :(

I would recommend trying the game again in 480p. It's much smoother though still not perfect. I've been playing for a few days now, and once you get past the technical issues, it is actually a damn good game. I'm hooked, and would go so far as to say it is one of the best NFS games ever. It's just a shame about the performance.

EA are better than ever but its pretty clear their priority isnt anything Nintendo or MS.

Gee I'm on black list 5 now and I've seen no noticeable drops in frame rate or screen tearing. I'm running the game in 720p.

Maybe I'm just not sensitive to it.

Has anyone compared it with the PS2 version? The PS2 game looks great and has a very good framerate that's mostly consistent. Is it worth the upgrade to 360 say when NFS:MW is a lot cheaper on the 360 (like $30?).

I haven't noticed any framerate drops either.. he's totally right about the screen tearing however. It's not detrimental to gameplay, but it is distracting until you get used to it.

The 360 game is sharper, definitely, and the anti-aliasing on the graphics makes a tremendous difference, particularly to objects like trees and things with more organic shapes. The lighting is another area of significant improvement too. The intensity of the sunlight is something everyone who sees it comments on, and the way it bleeds across the screen is one of the first examples of genuinely blinding sunlight I've seen in a game. Cars can disappear into the glare momentarily, and if it happens to occur at a tense moment in a race, the effect can prompt a mild twinge of panic to the proceedings.

Like several of the launch games on 360, it does highlight some of the issues with multi-generational, multi-platform games. Although it's a very good looking game on the new box, and by no means as guilty of the crimes committed by the likes of Gun and Tony Hawk, it does seem to be somewhat hampered visually by its brothers on Xbox and PS2. That said, it's a great game overall, and if you're lucky enough to have a 360 it's definitely the version to buy

I played the PS2 demo today and I swear to god it looks like a really good PS1 game. It's so pixelated and washed out it makes my eyes water.

I'm not sure what's up with this game. I first played it on a friend's 360 on launch day which was in 1080i (and on a Core, just for fyi sake). The framerate was insanely bad, enough that I wished that I hadn't bought it. I didnt' have a chance to notice the tearing with all the jumpy framerate.

Fast forward a month and I have my Premium system running on a 720p, and using the same game disc it plays very very well, almost flawlessly. Sure the framerate drops some, but nothing at ALL compared to my friend's 360. I'm wondering if it's just 1080i that has the problems, or is it certain 360s themselves? Who knows, I just know that EA released some games of questionable quality for the 360 launch...

The pc version runs flawlessly, even at lcd res with maximum details.
if you have a decent pc skip the ps2, xbox/360 version and just get the pc game.
Online kinda sucks though.

There's screen tearing, like ALL EA 360 games, but it's a pretty rock solid 60fps.

If you're rendering during the vertical retrace (i.e. not syncing) to get performance - you are pretty far from 'rock solid' fps.

:lol Some of you guys need to take a better look at this game.

It's full of tearing (come on EA) and it drops from 60fps to somewhere near 30fps. (at least, in 720P... I never tried it in 480P... I might take a look).

I started playing it tonight and have noticed NO tearing in 720p. Image is quite stable on my end. Another GAF WTF.

It hurts that this game isn't running at 60fps though, seems content with doing about 25, which isn't so surprising given just how much detail and STUFF is displayed on screen at any given time. Lots and lots and lots of things being rendered at great detail. Takes time to accustom to the framerate(especially after spending a weekend with RR6), but settle in with a few races and the game peps along just fine(not sure how it'll handle extreme car speeds, a few choppers, and a dozen cops on your ass though).

Also the game is shockingly great too, I've not played far, but this city has a pretty solid layout, lots of neat cuts and landmarks to keep your attention. The 'street lingo' is expectedly grating, but those cutscenes are priceless! :lol

I play at 720p. I havent seen any tearing but there is something odd going on with the framerate. I hardly notice it anymore though. Best racer on the 360 IMO so no complaints here.

Edit: I love the cheesy cutscenes too. SEGA CD FTW!

This is completely wrong. The game is almost constantly tearing in either 720p or 1080i, in addition to the frame drops. I am absolutely baffled that one couldn't be able to see it.

...no. Time has definitely softened our memory of PS1 games. ;)

What's funny is I'm playing it at 720p and I haven't noticed any tearing yet (compared to something like PDZ, which has quite a bit in some areas). The framerate definitely does fluctuate though, I don't know what the exact rate is, but it is noticeable and somewhat annoying. I still like it though, feels more like Hot Pursuit 2 so far thank god.

Same here. I am not seeing any of the issues the original poster is talking about. Maybe I am just not sensitive to them. I am enjoying the game big time.

um.. it is pretty much never 60fps in this game, I you think this is 60fps, then try Ridge Racer 6, now THAT is 60fps..

i would say the framerate varies between 20-30fps CONSTANTLY in this game..

makes the game hard to steer actually

Most of the 360 games I've played thus far have performance issues.

NFS, as you said, is terrible
PDZ drops pretty often and displays plenty of tearing
Call of Duty 2 constantly drops from 60 fps whenever ANYTHING is happening
King Kong starts to get a bit rough when the action picks up (and fire ALWAYS drops the framerate)
Condemned chugs pretty much the whole time

The only truly great framerate I've experienced on 360 is found in Ridge Racer 6. A rock solid 60 fps, that one. PGR3 is also pretty good, but maxes at 30 fps and DOES occasionally drop. Haven't started Kameo, but the demo seemed pretty much fine.

It's baffling how flipping good this game is turning out to be. I am having a hard time convincing myself that EA could pull off a release as well crafted and planned as this game is all by their little selfs.

The city itself is entirely convincing exuding a cohesive design in the design of it's roads, highways, and even golf course. The architects that built this sucker really put in the dedication to make this release look less foolish than the environments of Underground. Not quite on the level of Rockstar's Midnight Club layouts, but it's amazingly close.

Still have seen no tearing, I've noticed it in PDZ, but not once in this game. It has to be mentioned again how utterly gorgeous this game is, dynamic weather, constant timeshifts(RR6 needed this), the everpresent color and hues that the dramatic lighting and skyline gives off(including the weird HDR effect). Again, so much detail packed on screen.

SOLD!

Im gona buy this tomorrow. I need a racer, and I'm not that interested in PGR3.

It's not hyperbole, it literally reminds me of playing Driver 1 on the PS1, but with much more detail in the city. Maybe it's because I'm using an HDTV, but it's incredibly pixelated. Not even Ico is this low-res on my TV.

Also I'd like to say I'm going to Gamestop and trading this shithead game in ASAP, before I break my controller. The cop chases are a colossal disapointment. I'd rather play NFS Hot Pursuit.

Incredibly pixelated? Are you sure you didn't get the XBox version by mistake?

The game certainly has a lot of frame rate issues. When I started playing it, it stuck out like a sore thumb. But you get used to it after two hours and it does not look so bad anymore (but it does not mean that it is not there). But I have not noticed much tearing.

Going by the downloadable demo--which is extensive and has a heavy-duty final cop-chase scenario (punch through 6 roadbloacks all over the town, then try to evade)--all I experienced was a superb-looking and exciting to play racer. Ran much more smoothly than the Xbox demo, consistent framerate, and no screen tearing. And the details, lighting/weather effects, everything looked surprisingly good.

Frankly, I may actually pick this up as my second 360 racer, shifting Ridge Racer further down the line.

I finally noticed some tearing when playing in first person view and doing rapid donuts in the middle of an intersection. It's so forced by my hand and happens so instantaneously(you really have to pay close attention and watch for it during the endless spinning) that this whole argument is the biggest non-issue I've seen from this forum in recent times.

Stunning looking game!

I have it for the Gamecube. The framerate seems really solid on it, on par with the PC version I've seen. I do find the color saturation to be too intense tho. It's like staring into an eclipse after awhile.

it is the best NFS I have played though and I've played them all.

I wish I could try on whatever rose colored glasses Brandon is wearing. The graphics are adequate at best. "Relatively jaggy free!" is about the most enthusiastic thing I can muster to say about it.

If you followed the conversation I was having with DarienA you'd know I was talking about the PS2 version.
