Apparently Chris Johnston was on Sportsnet with Jeff Marek and he didn't think the Leafs were finished. Lou wasn't available for the media to talk about the deal. He usually does that.

The most pressing need is a top four D but who's available?

Might just be Johnston trying to drum up interest for the trade deadline but we'll see.

Brooksie on the Rangers (and others) and Shattenkirk:
The Rangers remain in on the Kevin Shattenkirk sweepstakes but remain reluctant to meet the Blues' asking price for the pending free-agent defenseman, multiple sources have told The Post.

One well-placed source reports that St. Louis general manager Doug Armstrong is attempting to ratchet up a bidding war between the Blueshirts, Penguins and Caps for the right to rent the 28-year-old righty whose acquisition could tip the balance of power within the Metro Division. The Oilers and Bruins, if not the Maple Leafs, also are believed to have interest in Shattenkirk.

It is unknown whether general manager Jeff Gorton would be willing to yield his club's first-rounder as part of a package to get the defenseman who presumably would become Ryan McDonagh's first-pair partner as well as the power play's point man, but the Blueshirts remain steadfast in their unwillingness to deal away a young top-nine forward. Pavel Buchnevich would fit under that umbrella. Brady Skjei is off limits. And the Rangers at this point are believed to have no interest in including defenseman Sean Day, the 2016 third-rounder, who has had a very good season for OHL Windsor, as part of a deal to bring back Shattenkirk.

I can't see Shattenkirk signing with anybody before free agency. He's gonna get paid serious coin, and why would he sign with the team that had to give up good stuff to get him? He's going to be just a rental, so how much of the good stuff are teams willing to give up for a rental?
