NHL Off-Season 2014 |OT2| - Dan Cleary

This is from Renaud Lavoie:

Lots of talks about a possible expansion involving 4 city's. Its not something the NHL is working on. Bill Daly told me nothing as changed.
I'm more inclined to believe Lavoie if he says so, but Daly would also be denying this no matter what. I'm still expecting 2 more teams though.

Playing the NHL demo made me realize how terrible I am at those games now.
Don't think I landed a single hit, and didn't even come close to scoring :(

Hell, I feel like a San Diego team would bring in more money than freaking Vegas. I can't see them filling an arena there at all. Vegas is basically destitute, sprawling suburbs and a small (area-wise) tourist district. At least San Diego is a functioning city that has been proven to be able to support pro sports franchises.

I can't see how money would make sense here.

Most in Vegas are transplants. A solid fanbase wouldn't build in the area.

I was more thinking the casinos ponied up

I'm happy to see the league is denying the expansion talk, but it's hard to not be at little bit worried.

If anything, they should be moving the league's moribund teams to the proposed cities.

I totally agree with this.

Coyotes to Quebec. Stars to Toronto area. Kings to Seattle. Etc.

So we're about to put NHL franchises in two cities that won't be able to sell any tickets or jerseys, and three that don't even have any good Ontario kids. What a disaster.

So wait, Seattle is getting a team for sure by 2017?

And adding 4... how does that setup the various divisions? Still an imbalance of more teams in the eastern conference?

A 4-team expansion still really weird to me. So, you put two teams in the west to balance out the conferences, only to two more out east?

A 2-team or even a 6-team expansion makes more sense then this, at least you'll have an even 8-9 teams in each division with some shuffling. Then again, this is fucking Bettman we're talking about.

19 teams in the NHL have a positive operating income

adding 4 more teams, with a majority of them being in american cities isnt the right way to do this.

capitalize on markets that will sell out. i said it before, 2 team expansion into seattle and quebec. targeted for 2017.

If Lavoie is reporting no way 4 gets done, I'll believe it. 2 seems very likely still, 4 would be too much too soon.

If they wanted a market to sell out, then it's definitely another team in the GTA.

I'd like Seattle and Quebec for sure, but there's no way in terms of money they would get more out of those two than another in Hamilton or Markham

I think the 4 team expansion rumor is BS. I think the reality is 4 markets are vying for a 2 team expansion though. Vegas is interesting because they have MGM finishing an arena by 2016 whereas Seattle keeps getting setbacks (NBA most recently) and is not close to a timeline for construction. IMO there will be a 2016-17 expansion to Quebec and one of Vegas/Seattle.

Adding more markets will likely lead to lower caps, not higher.

Quebec and Seattle would be in the footprint of winnipeg.. likely Toronto 2 as well for many years because the leafs have a 100 year headstart. Las Vegas will be budget.

Toronto 2 is a good option too, most so than I think Quebec now.

What annoys you most about fans of your team who post elsewhere?

For me the Flyers fans on Facebook who want to trade Coburn with no realistic plan to bring in an equal or better defender are the worst, followed by the people who think Rinaldo is a useful player despite all the statistical evidence to the contrary.

Really, you've said that before. How do you come to that and what does it even mean. Or is this a Kelowna judgment of city folk

Most Internet forum fans don't bother to qualify what they say or think it through. So they're pretty obnoxious. Thus I've never posted on HFBoards and can barely suffer this fucking place

Minnesotans who think we haven't won a Stanley Cup already because we don't have enough Minnesotans on the team.

Koivu is a terrible captain because he is European. Europeans can't be good leaders.

Basically Don Cherry-esque Minnesotans.

Fair enough, I've said this a few times as a drive by comment. Guess its time to stop being a cunt and explain myself.

Maybe its not that Canucks fans are bad, but a lot of people I know that so happen to be Canucks fans are not knowledgeable of the game. And on many many occasions I go to the bar or a buddies place to watch a game and am baffled by the comments they make during the game.

Do you get frustrated with sports fans that don't know much about the sport they are watching? These people are the same ones that fly flags out their car windows and own more merchandise than I do. Coming from playing the sport for over 15 years now, do I expect too much out of people who potentially haven't played the game and im actually the dick here?

Poor example: I dated a girl last year that was a huge Canucks fan. Went to her house, the whole family watches the games with their jerseys on and have signed jerseys on the walls and shit in the living room. I took her to a Kelowna Rockets game and she asked me what being off-side was when I mentioned why the play was blown down.

Edit: im probably just being a dick bag, but I expected more out of fans I guess.

I...I had to do it, SuperSonic...! :'(

Leafs fans are such masochists sometimes...

you're probably right but i honestly do think a second team would be good for Leaf fans. it might actually provide a reason for the team to give a crap if there's some competition, instead of letting MLSE lazily swim in its pools of money all year long.

Despite some critics that claim Leiweke 'did nothing', he was pretty instrumental in getting the fuckfaces at Rogers and Bell to open up their big goddamn wallets and go and try to get talent and to improve our facilities and prestige to convince others to join us.

Ownership has always been complacent, partly cause they're milking a cash cow, but I also think partly cause they don't know what the fuck it is they're doing.

Leiweke isn't a hockey guy, but things like the Raptors practice facility, and getting Defoe, and accepting help from Drake, these are all things that MLSE either rejected outright or never had enough reason to do themselves.

So, yeah, they're lazy. They don't understand a healthy 'competitive' team is better for the bottom line. Like most businesses, they're only concerned about short term gain. Why waste money to grow the franchises long term when you can do nothing and still get moneyz?

Desharnais is a #1 center, although that's died down and seems to be only the most hardcore french Canadians.

The funniest part about this is considering how much you go on about Minnesota and it's players yourself.

Agreed. I think Vegas is nothing more than leverage to drive up expansion fees for the other markets. Seattle's arena could be approved in the next couple months(assuming the city allows it to get built with an NHL team as the first tenant). It probably wouldn't be ready in time for 2016, but a Seattle team could stand one season in Key Arena before moving into the new arena. There certainly have been worse temporary venues in the NHL before.

Adding more markets will likely lead to lower caps, not higher.

Depends on what markets they are. Vegas/Albequerque/El Paso, going to lose money. Seattle/QC/Toronto 2, breaking even at the bare minimum and likely adding a good chunk to revenues, especially QC and Toronto.

There is so so so much of this in Montreal and surrounding areas. This unrivalled fan base you hear so much about is made up of a majority of supremely biased people who know nothing at all about the game and just follow silly media frenzy. They have no opinion of their own. Whatever's trending that week in the news or on the radio will be spewed around as fact by just about everyone. And it's infuriating because literally everyone here follows the Habs. When someone says they don't like hockey, it's such an anomaly people are kinda shocked.

I have maybe 2-3 friends and acquaintances who are actual fans of the sport and can have a real talk. Everyone else is either in it because it's the thing to do, or are diehard Habs fanatics who know nothing about anything outside of the team and have ignorant ass opinions they feel a need to talk about on a daily basis.

I just smile and nod now mostly. But still, bar and party playoff atmosphere is amazing. Except when they play the Rangers. That was terrible.

Would a second team in Toronto work? Will Leafs fans just change teams at some point? I guess you had a somewhat similar situation in the NYC area with the creations of the Isles and Devils. Forty years later, and those teams still struggle living in the shadow of the Rangers.

Even the Rangers have been in the shadow of the greatest team in the last 40 years, the Penguins.
