I don't have the slightest clue regarding this game. I only just noticed it from the PS3 special edition posts in the pickup thread. I'm looking to pick up a new game, and this looks radically different than anything I've played. What's it comparable to?

I've been watching my brother play the game, I'm disappointed in the graphics. The characters are okay, but the backgrounds look like shit. I don't think the game looks any better than Tales of Symphonia in general. I know graphics don't matter, but I think the whole look would've been better/ more coherent had they used hand-painted backgrounds to compliment the 2D characters.

Does this game ever get challenging at any point?

Just got to the golden grove and I feel like I'm sleepwalking through the battles.

Honestly, that's a new one. The "backgrounds look like shit" is something I haven't seen said about this game.

I loved the backgrounds in the towns! I find that the entire look just works for this game. And I thought they did utilize some sort of hand-painted backgroundish sort of look in certain parts of the game but not all of them? If anything, he's probably just not in an area with much detail.

So I have a 40gb hard drive on my PS3. If I clear as much shit out as possible and try and make it all available (I'm sure a portion of this 40gb is already used up by mandatory stuff) will I be able to download this game and its DLC?

I think a 40GB PS3 is unlikely to be able to download this game. Has anyone tried? I believe you need at least 44GB~ or so to download and install this game so a 60GB is the absolute lowest PS3 size you can get this game on.

Just a thought, after playing this game for about 30 hours+, I feel like the voice acting is about right. There isn't an overwhelming amount of it like in FFXIII/XIII-2 but it tends to show up during key story moments (but sometimes disappears midway through) which is to be expected. It'd be nice to have more, but I was expecting less from what was said about it, lol.

Anyone got any recommendations for areas that are best for grinding if you're level 33? I'm on the
Mornstar stones
quest, managed to get the first one
(the snake one)
but the monsters around the area of
the ice one
kick my arse.

I could also do with knowing somewhere to grind for gold too, I was really disappointed when I found out the casino doesn't let you convert chips back to cash as I was doing really well at blackjack there.

If you could DL and install the 16GB portion first, then it might work, otherwise, probably not.

I thought one suggestion for that was to buy items with the chips and resell the items to get guilders?

Oh, that's a possibility too, I guess. I was thinking of a single download session. Does that work though if you install the game in parts like that without the other file?

That I'm not sure about, but them being separate files leads me to believe they install separately as well, but again, I could be wrong.

It gets a bit tougher after you leave there. Nothing overly taxing but the baddies are stronger. Just after that part myself.

Just beat the boss of the area, he was easy too...

Is there any real strategy to the battles?

I feel like I am switching out between Oliver and his three pokemon, just to stave off boredom, rather than any tactical advantage.

Go to Billy Goat Bluff South (same island as Hamelin, north of Tombstone Trail). TokoTokos spawn there and are worth 8000 exp each. Supposedly better spawn rate than the tokos at Ugly Duckling Isle, but we found tons of tokos at UDI. You can also make good gold on the other mobs there. A very few tokotokos will have you in the high 40s.

Sounds like you may be severely overleveled then. Not much you can do about that really.

Yep he was really easy. As I say it's a bit harder now you leave but nothing you shouldn't be able to handle without too much sweat. I use Mite and Lahmahl only and they are all I need right now.

Thanks for the answers guys. My flatmate had already started the download (I'm away for the weekend) cos I'd asked him to look into it. It's downloading now and he said when he deleted everything to make space there was like 45-50gb on the hard drive so hopefully it'll be okay. I'll report back.

Turned it on and was determined to get a stupid Green Buncher and after a half hour finally it happened!

Got some evolve orbs too.

So now that I reached almost 10 hours till the end (I think) FINALLY Oliver got Mornstar spell. Seriously they should have had spells like that unlock in the beginning and also the Unleash spell should have unlocked after the first boss and let's you learn new summoning a after beating said Guardian of course.

I really like this game, but honestly, the battle system is just flat out terrible. The monster designs are definitely not interesting enough and the random, low percentage catch rates as opposed to actually using some skill to catch creatures (like in pokemon) really makes me wish they never involved the familiars in the first place. If they just made the human characters themselves the battle members and used a wild arms style classic battle system where each character has very unique skills and ways to power up I think this would honestly be the best RPG in years. But as it stands now, I'm actually happy when I don't have to fight anymore and just get to a town and start doing little quests for people, which is something I've never said about an RPG that I liked before.

Question though - Is there anywhere where you can buy the metamorphis stones or are they just random drops?

Just heading back to Al Mamoon, Oliver is Level 25.

Any other suggestions? The regular monsters in this area seem to kick my ass, and I never found any of those 8000 exp ones. I did find a 2000 exp one on Ugly Duckling Isle but only one, it never seemed to spawn again.

Is there any way to know if you've missed a hidden treasure chest?

If you actually meant the invisible ones, then I don't know. If you want to check to see if you've missed any in a dungeon though, the Telling Stone will show what's left to collect.

I have beat Hamelin, so I dunno how much into the game I am. 55%? Someone else can say.

That said, a short list

PROS:

+ Unbelievable Visuals; Production values off the charts. Studio Ghibli's animated bits are as great as you'd expect.
+ Fantastic Orchestrated Soundtrack
+ World Map is impressively detailed and packed with secrets; exploration is a gas
+ Familiars battle system is fast and engaging and awesomely customizable
+ Dungeons are not too big and not too small, feel just the right size so they don't overstay their welcome.*
+ Enemies on screen, so you can pick and choose the familiar-type you want to fight (Note: They chase after you really fast if they spot you, though.)
+ A fairly lighthearted yet engaging sense of humor

CONS:

- Getting stuck around other familiars in battle so that you can't reach the person you selected to attack. GTFO.
- *Dungeons could stand to be considerably less linear, however.
- Story is bland in terms of its overall details and structure. Very unremarkable, but inoffensive overall. Note: This is my impression of it up until Hamelin.
- Sometimes you can spam Oliver's magic and avoid using familiars altogether in battles, probably a balance issue that should have been fixed (I avoid doing this but others don't have the self-control)
- MP overall is REALLY poorly balanced for Esther and Swaine; they run out too fast (Swaine is half done with his MP sometimes after one big attack). That said, it's hardly an issue once you get good at your strategy.

I would agree with most of that, although I have no idea what you mean with what I highlighted. The combat is nowhere "fast and engaging", especially with the hitbox collision issues as well as extremely poor AI. I mean yeah, trash might be fast, but trash also isn't difficult and you can mostly just mash X, all the way up until the final areas if you really wanted to. Sometimes the AI does an okay job at sending out the first familiar you have for them, but if you're ever ambushed, they will just stand there trying to do their melee attacks after the initial ambush timer has run out. They also have problems of sending out a different familiar at times just because that familiar might have an opposing sign that's good against a particular enemy, even if that familiar is drastically weaker than what was already in play. The AI also suffers very badly on boss fights. You'll see a few people claiming that the AI "isn't that bad", but then you'll also see a bunch of people posting about how difficult the
Jellyfish
type boss was (it's not really that hard), and that's 100% due to the piss poor AI. I've beaten that boss three times, and never had a party wipe on it, even on my first try. But I've always finished it with a single character standing.

There are a ton of familiars to choose from, but unless you have the strategy guide, it's more like throwing darts blindly to find "good" familiars that will work with your current group. You have no idea what tricks they have beyond their first form until you've already morphed them. So it's hard to spend time "experimenting" unless all you do is grind Tokos all day leveling up low level familiars. At the end of the day, there's a specific few familiars that can be counted on to get you through any situation. There may be others buired somewhere out there, but you honestly won't know this on your first playthrough. You won't know until your second or third.

And I feel so sorry for all of the people who keep posting the Green Buncher horror stories. In my three playthroughs, I don't think I had to spend more than 30 minutes tops on it, and that was while doing the other sidequests. My horror story was trying to get a Shrimpaler on my second playthrough. I had to literally kill over 100 of them, but I never had a problem with anything on my third; yet.

First of all, you seem way over leveled. Second, not where I'm at, dunno about later. But you get them pretty liberally with drops and from some story sequences so it shouldn't be a huge issue unless you're going nuts with leveling familiars.

Is anyone else running into this "bug" in The Fairyground? I've completed the area and am able to leave the island, but no one in the town has any pieces of heart for me to take even though the guide says there should be 3 in the town. Do I have to do something special to trigger them, or did I run into a bad bug somehow?

Oh, and btw, I must be going through this game veeeeery slowly, because I'm at 27 hours and haven't even gotten to Hamlin yet. It's probably because I'm trying to catch every familiar in each area and do every sidequest.

Ah well that clears a spot on my team for either the skeleton warrior or a Bighorn if I can actually catch one.

Those things look like beasts!

Holy shit I went there just now and in my first battle found 2. 17k xp. Esther's first familiar that I just leveled to its final form jumped around 20 levels from that 1 battle.

are you talking about a fairy that needs to be helped? if thats the case you will have to leave and come back at a later time, you will encounter plenty of quest where you need to backtrack to complete them

Yeah don't even try to fight those guys. Even after getting my guys to 40 and my familiars in the 30s I'm still getting crushed. You have to hope to find one of those things on the map itself and then chase it down.

Yeah, there's a bit of backtracking. It gets easier when you get a Travel spell. Going back to Father Oak every time for the rewards though took a bit of time before then.. agh.

You're not always going to have enough pieces of heart to finish every quest until later on for some errands especially around that point and for most sets of errands afterward.

Yep, I was your level when I fought the boss of the next dungeon. Oh well, just means it'll be easier for you.

I love that the game is traditional through and through, but man is it a chore to play sometimes. I'm only 15 hours in and fatigue is setting in already. The dungeon designs are so shitty. Could they really not think of anything other than interconnected hallways? Also the dialogue and characters are bland as hell, I can't root for characters that literally have no personality (at least the Japanese voices don't seem so offensive). Then there's the standard boat-load of fetch-quests.

It's not a bad game though, in a lot of ways this is a welcome return to 16-bit rpg's but I've played tons of those and this one really doesn't differentiate itself in any way, it's just so derivative. If you haven't played as many jrpg's a lot of my complaints won't matter, but I was hoping the game would try to expand on the tried-and-true formula, not just conform to it.

Use Gateway to respawn the mobs.

Use Seek Fortune when the Tokotoko runs if it looks like it's going to get away, as it seems to reset the run status.

A quicker way to get them to respawn is fly up to that city on the hill, perdida, and then enter/exit quick.

They look like beasts, but may as well be the Tombstone creatures. They move and attack very slowly, and neither are really any good for damage. They seem only to be there to soak up damage, and that's all.

Rank A and S
are unlocked much later on through story progression. IMO they don't even actually matter at all either unless you want to rewatch a bunch of cutscenes. You don't get more gear or familiars. That was a pretty huge letdown for me. "Oh, it must be something really good since it's locked for so long!". Nope, and Rank A is worse than Rank B.

As for Swaine, you would have to manually control him to get the best use of Yoo-Hoo, or simply remove every trick from your Bonehead but that, and have him "give it your all".

A quicker way to get them to respawn is fly up to that city on the hill, perdida, and then enter/exit quick.

It takes ~22 seconds to use gateway twice. You can also use it in a spot that will have you surrounded by three spawnpoints; two of which don't really have anywhere to actually run.

What exactly do you mean by traditional? The game has a ridiculous amount of anti-frustration features born by modern design, so I don't know what you could be referring to. As for the dungeons, I'll take the ones here any day over, say, Rogue Galaxy or other Level-5 RPGs. And I can't see how the VA is offensive, and funny you mention the JP ones when one of the main complaints of JP players was weak VA work.
