How does the EXP distribution work?
Oliver was ahead of Mitey for a while, but then I got a Game Over, and now Mitey's ahead of Oliver

I barely used Oliver prior to the latest Game Over, but he was still ahead.
After the Game Over, I've been using him more often, but he's still behind.
There is no experience distribution. Everybody in your active roster (i.e., not in reserves) gets the same amount whether they were alive or dead at the end of battle. There's just different experience curves for different familiars.

Question: If I just finished Hamelin, how much of the game have I completed % wise? Just a guesstimate?

Forgetting Laputa, man! That one definitely fits the mood of the game too.

Edit: Beaten. Howl's Moving Castle is an adapted work, so not really a Ghibli original.

Ah yeah, Laputa is a good one too.

Really, though, he should just buy Studio Ghibli collection... almost all the Studio's films are fantastic.

My favorite is Only Yesterday, but that's definitely NOT like the tone of this game.

Man, I am going to be the most depressed man on Earth when Hayao Miyazaki passes on. Like seriously, that'd likely sever my ties to anime once and for all :(

You had better worry about Isao Takahata too. They were grooming Yoshifumi Kondo (Whisper of the Heart), but then he tragically died at 47. Yes, all Ghibli films are good, but I want to rewatch Laputa and Kiki's pretty badly after playing the game (still playing it).

Yeah, but before I got the Game Over, I got to the same level prior to the Game Over, but it was Oliver leading.
However after that, Mitey was leading, and is still in the lead.

I don't think I have any reserves (only 3 Familiars), so I don't think that applies here.

He looks pretty healthy, so let's hope it's not for awhile.

Mitey levels at a faster rate then Oliver (all the familiars level faster than the characters). It was just coincidence that you had a game over at around the time that Mitey was going to overtake Oliver.

A Ghibli film is a Ghibli film. If we're throwing out adapted works, that includes Howl's Moving Castle, Arrietty, Grave of the Fireflies, Whispers of the Heart, Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbors the Yamadas, Earthsea and From Up on Poppy Hill. That's most of Ghibli's feature films.

No, but prior to the Game Over, I got to the same level (13), but Oliver was in the lead.
After I got the Game Over, they were both back down to 12, but then Mitey leveled up before Oliver this time.

Idk what to tell you. Game overs do absolutely nothing to experience (except for obviously kicking you back to wherever it loads from). And everyone recieves the exact same amount of exp per fight.

so what to do at the casino, I just bought 2k chips and won 11k from platoon. how is this broken? To get 11k I had to won 3 games in a row and it's not easy at all. edit: k, you can abuse AI, going to try this now.

The most reliable way is the Slot Machine.

I used number 7, play with 10 coins until you have 2 different levels of hour glass items.
Then get into bonus mode (or whatever they call it, where the values go to 2x) and use both hourglasses at once. Then match 3 7s along the bottom row. It's pretty easy to do with the 2x slowdown.

You can do this at least 2 times, which is quite a few coins.

In other news, got the platinum trophy today :)

But.. that means the game is pretty much over :(

Alchemy tips:

There are 14 items you don't have to make for Alchemy for the trophy, which is coincidentally the number of items that, besides the post-game quest, need the ultra rare items.

Drill Screws (Outside Skull Mountain) and Jade Marbles (East of Hamelin on an island, and the area you reach via air, south of Skull Mountain) were two of the gather items I did not have enough of. You also need quite a few Iron Diamonds (steal from Rabbits outside Perdidia), and Blowpipes (steal from Red Dinos in the final dungeon). To make this easier, make what you can with what ingredients you already have, then make a list of what you need. Since you can sometimes get multiple types of the items you need by stealing from certain areas, it can save some time.

Honestly this comes closer to the "adapted work" area anyway, being that Level 5 did the story. Ghibli did animation and the soundtrack, but it's less their work from my understanding than those adapted works are.

I thought they did some of the world design and character designs are definitely Ghibli and the monster designs too. Either way, Level-5 is channeling Ghibli to some extent.

Opens Post game for viewing game cut-scenes and Ghibli animations.

I was hoping it had games I could bet 500 to 1000 chips on. Suikoguy,
how much Alchemy do I need to do to get that guy in the cave, below the desert, to talk to me
?

Yeah, it's just really weird.
Maybe it has something to do with the enemies?

I dunno, just weird.

It's also post game, you will hate the asshole by the time you are done if you are going for the platinum.

Also, if anyone needs any help or has any questions, feel free to send me a PM.
I won't be checking into the thread as much, but I'd still like to help anyone who wants help.

So he's the one I have to farm gold familiar's drops for?

So it i think their are missables. The old oak says to come back often and I figured you would tell him about everything up to that point. But I only told him my most receipt event and didn't get all the items for the other events. Wish I would have know this sooner. Hope the items he gives weren't anything special

He gives you a few pages for the wizard's companion, but nothing else irreplaceable.

According to the official guide, the rewards from Old Father Oak include:
- Defeat Hickory Dock: Milk Chocolate (x5)
- Defeat Moltaan: Phoenix Feather (x3)
- Set sail for the first time: Bottles of Pixie Dew (x3)
- Set sail after ship repair: Medal of Agility
- Cure Marcassin's brokenheartness: Healing Tear Gem
- Receive map of Magic Stones: Green Man's Cloak
- Defeat Cerboreas: Nostrum
- Return to Iron Wyvern: Great Sage's Secret
- Defeat Porco Loco: Wizard King's Secret

And after you cure Marcassin's brokenheartedness, you can collect the Wizard's Companion Page.

Apart from those, there are new dialogue rewards. I'm not sure what those are since I'm still at an early part of the game. Regardless, I hope that clarifies a few things for you!

Beat the game today. Game time was 37 hours, Oliver and company (lol) were around level 63. Spoilers for endgame
I liked that the villains were humanized. I hate games that have maniacal villains destroying the world for no reason but to be a dick; these were truly tragic tortured souls, and I was moved by both the executor and the queen's backstories. I felt that everything after the false ending was a letdown, however; the final dungeon was not epic and was quite poor, and the actual ending was so short and anticlimactic that I wished they had found a way to tack it on to the initial false ending instead of having 2 more hours to pad out the gametime. Though I guess the backstory of the queen might be hard to work in....I don't know, for me the ending is the shortest and worst of any RPG of recent memory. "I tried to kill everyone, but I'll make it up to them....I'll plant flowers! People like flowers, right?"

Broke down and bought it, production values are thru the roof and the detail is as crisp as it is in videos and pics suggest. Don't like the vague but everpresent next tip in the upper left corner, which is both useless and unremovable.

Tidy!

If you press Select the game goes HUD-less and it only shows up when you stand still if I'm not mistaken.

I have a question.
Does it have a New Game +? If so, what stays and what what will be gone?

No, just post-game content.
But, it's not that big a deal as you can still get a platinum no mater what you do during the main game.

i thought the whole comedy set in Fairyground was very Monty Python-esque

man I really like this game a lot, it's really perfectly capturing the way jRPGs could make me engaged before they went to shit. It's really the same in all ways too - there's obvious flaws, but the total package really works it out in the end. The battle system has quirks, but I really have fun mixing and matching my familiars and figuring out the perfect set up. It's tons of customization everywhere, and customization is my friend.

I dunno. I'd be kinda sad if we never see another Level 5/Ghibli RPG again.

Haha I'm at the same place (innards). I can't believe how much I played this game today while needing to do other things.

As for familiars, I haven't experimented that much yet, mainly because it's kind of hard to start using new ones to see if they're good. So I'm sticking with the high leveled ones I got on Oliver and Swaine, while sticking two newbies on Esther (2 that have an affinity for her).

you gotta give in and try some others, 'cause that really does open the game up strategically

i've been doing it slowly but surely, putting one or two new familiars in each third slot of my characters and testing them out for a little bit. It's fun to see the idiosyncrasies of each familiar.

I know, but thinking about starting them off at level 1 then evolving and starting at level 1... Just not too appealing right now. I'm happy with the dudes I got for now. And like I said I'm using Esther as the scapegoat for now. I don't even have that many familiars in reserves though, just a bit over 10. Haven't been trying that hard to capture any particular ones.

Also how are most people going about armor? I have yet to buy anything actually. Whatever my familiars have equipped is what you get from quests and chests. Stuff is just too expensive, though I am kind of hoarding too much I believe.

If you've already done all the bounties the stretch of play from arriving at castaway cove to
getting the ship
is BRUTALLY tedious. I think i need a break until tomorrow now. Amazing game though.

7 hours farming scrolls of truth ... and i got only one from a golden Toko :(

You using the method I posted earlier?

The temple of tears method is the best way of doing it.

Keep in mind this is really only worth it if you are going for the plat, as you need it for the last merit badge.

Basically, run down the stairs to the first fork and check both mobs that spawn there.
Then take the east path, turn right then go by the roots. You can move the camera to check 3 more. If you see none cast Vacate and try again.

Don't forget to use Veil.

The drop rate is about 5%, but as someone mentioned they do give quite a bit of change, i'm at 902k now, lol.
They appear in random groups about 10% of the time, so this also might work if you are working on maxing a familiar's affection level. But it's faster to check the 6 spawns.

You can also go for the Honky-Tonkers in Tombstone Trail, their rare steal is the Scroll of Truth. They appear most commonly in the cave portion.

Once you get used to it, you'll begrudgingly start doing it more often. I was actually complaining about this very same thing a few hours ago, but it definitely gets easier the more you do it.

no way without armor and shit I definitely think my familiars would start dropping like flies. Some of these assholes hit unexpectedly hard, and it always seems like if I hit someone to start a battle ALL the other enemies will focus on hitting me at the same time so it adds up quick. 20 hp-20hp-20hp-60hp damage attacks against me aren't fun!

I know it hasn't even been two weeks yet, but could you guys give impressions of what you think of the game right now?

Stripped to its gameplay, how is it as an RPG? What do you like and what gripes do you have?

How's the story? Pacing? How's the soundtrack? Is it all Hisashi or did he just do the theme?

I have a borrowed PS3 right now and have been considering this. Been leaning towards Fire Emblem, but I'm a big fan of Ghibli and Hisashi's soundtracks. However, if the gameplay isn't all that I'm not sure it'd keep my interest.

I usually bought a set of all the best stuff from the weapon vendor every time I hit a new town, but only for the 1st column of familiars. Then all their items filtered down to the 2nd and 3rd column familiars. I never really had enough cash to splurge for items for all 9 familiars until very late in the game.

It didn't bother me, but the long period without a dungeon could bother others. There are still bosses in between, at least.

I have beat Hamelin, so I dunno how much into the game I am. 55%? Someone else can say.

That said, a short list

PROS:

+ Unbelievable Visuals; Production values off the charts. Studio Ghibli's animated bits are as great as you'd expect.
+ Fantastic Orchestrated Soundtrack
+ World Map is impressively detailed and packed with secrets; exploration is a gas
+ Familiars battle system is fast and engaging and awesomely customizable
+ Dungeons are not too big and not too small, feel just the right size so they don't overstay their welcome.*
+ Enemies on screen, so you can pick and choose the familiar-type you want to fight (Note: They chase after you really fast if they spot you, though.)
+ A fairly lighthearted yet engaging sense of humor

CONS:

- Getting stuck around other familiars in battle so that you can't reach the person you selected to attack. GTFO.
- *Dungeons could stand to be considerably less linear, however.
- Story is bland in terms of its overall details and structure. Very unremarkable, but inoffensive overall. Note: This is my impression of it up until Hamelin.
- Sometimes you can spam Oliver's magic and avoid using familiars altogether in battles, probably a balance issue that should have been fixed (I avoid doing this but others don't have the self-control)
- MP overall is REALLY poorly balanced for Esther and Swaine; they run out too fast (Swaine is half done with his MP sometimes after one big attack). That said, it's hardly an issue once you get good at your strategy.
