Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch |OT|

I'm about 10 hours in and a bit beyond the
volcano
, are there any familiars I should try and get? I keep feeling like I'm going to miss something good.

guys on reddit says that they use healing mana when on "dont use ability"

makes great use when you combine that with "all out attack" and "all out defend"

I've never seen that happen. What I have seen happen is the game will seemingly randomly switch tactics to back "Do What You Want" at the start of some fights.

Started this proper today and got about 3 hours in. The battle system is starting to click with me and starting to get a feel for the general flow of the game. So far, pretty pleasant. Only gripes is the camera is too zoomed in when in towns/dungeons and the wizard companion viewing is like reading a pdf or image on psp. Would've liked it to be more suited for a TV/console.

So I've been reading up about this freezing bug and it seems pretty common. I hope they patch it soon. If it happens much more I'm probably just going to get my money back. It's a real shame cause my wife and I are loving the game.

I got a question.

Late game spoilers

Is Oliver's mom his biological mother, or did she just raise him? They never made that clear.

I figured biological hence his magical abilities.

EDIT: Well I'm an idiot. I hope my poor tagging skills didn't spoil anything for anybody.

40 hours in. Beat
Shadar and un-zombified Big Dong Dell. They really wanted me to think the game was over there, but I knew better. Still, I wouldn't have been surprised if the credits rolled and the real plot kicked in afterwards ala Tales of Legendia.

ok so i just bought nino kuni on psn. let's hope this rpg lives up to the hype. Is it better than FF13-2?

Its a very different game. Much more in line with the old 90's jrpg's.

Personally i think Ni No Kuni is a much better game but I guess that is down to preference.

Imagine Dark Cloud mixed with Pokemon and all that tossed into a Studio Ghibly movie and you pretty much have Ni No Kuni...

Don't be throwing Mite away just yet. Dinoceros can only stay in battle for a short time.

The Dino is actually garbage tier until a) you get at least Earsplitter, b) you've given him at least +15 - 25 in accuracy food and c) he's midway through his second form or higher simply for the higher accuracy. You don't miss with special attacks, but it still needs to auto attack. Having the Dragonstooth ring also helps immensely since it ups attack speed by one.

Mitey isn't really worth shelving ever simply because you'll be using the Dino for most everything eventually, and you only need your other familiars for stamina backup. Who you use won't really matter too much, although if you're going for stalling, a Batterhorn is probably a safe bet.

As a side note, I like good visuals in a game, but I'm not a graphics whore. If I was, I wouldn't bother with Wii games, or older PS2 games (although they sure like nice on PCSX2!), but I think this game is seriously one of the few games--if only--where I could say it was worth the price simply for the presentation. Even though I truly believe the gameplay and story are completely rubbish, it's just so damn nice to look at. Although I'm not sure how many people would truly want to revisit once they've gotten it out of their system within the first month.

Depends on what you think is impressive. The boss designs are aesthetically awesome, and they do some super moves, but your party? Not so much, although Oliver can kind of
do what bosses do eventually
.

I found the grand sage pretty funny.
"yeah you can morph them or not, I dont care, do whatever you want" and just the way he was a massive dick and everyone just said please and thank you to him like his speech was totally normal towards them.

Is it me or are your companions absolutely thick as shit when it comes to fighting. I have one set to keep us alive and she's the first to die..... BONKERS!

How important is the Guide for a playthrough? I should be getting one from Bamco eventually. I have stuff to tide me over in the meantime.

or should I just start right away?

Have you done all the sidequest? Or just sell a few items you don't need.

I ended up with ~600k guilders eventually. Finished the game and don't play it anymore. I'd give the money to you if I could, lol.

Yea the AI clearly wasn't tested, they do what they want no matter what you tell them to.

The only way you can stop them using attack skills is to press square for all out defence but you don't get that until later, they are much more likely to heal when defending also.

Yeah this is one aspect that pisses me off, the girl just dies on anything outside of normal enemys. For example the the trails boss, I said to stay back and heal. Nope im going to go hit the boss with my stick and get destroyed.
It became a waste of time burning my mana healing her compared to letting her die and using it all on mite and myself.

Yeah, I fought 4 bosses (so far) after Esther joined my party and in all of them Ester died in under a minute. And I'm certainly not wasting any revives on her, because she'll just die again pretty soon.

I love the wizards companion, and how its dresses all the info it give you so it fits into the world. I wish more games did that, it makes reading what is pretty much just a codex entry way more enjoyable.

So, a funny thing happened while flying around south of
Ivory Tower
. There was a
large, colorful bird, almost the size of Tengri, flying around. At first it was on a plane below, but then it changed altitudes suddenly and was above him. It looked like it might have been turning toward the Ivory Tower, but I lost track of it and it was gone.
Have never seen anything like it and have never seen creatures moving around in the overworld that you can't fight, so I wonder what this thing is, and whether you can fight it?

In other news, encountered three tokotocolds in random battles. The first fled - they are way, way faster than the others & my miss rate was through the roof. But they are weak to dark, so nuked the second two with
Evenstar
for a one hit kill. Each was good for two levels on Oliver, who is now 63.

I so wanted the Wizard Edition for this, instead I'm making do with a Nexus 7!

You can zoom all the way in though to make reading a lot bigger and enjoyable, didn't realise this at first...

That bird is the bird from the opening anime cutscene showing the Second Country. I don't remember if they showed the scene in the PS3 assets though so you probably never noticed lol

yeah I have a pdf on Ipad, but even the in-game version of the companion is great. I REALLY like the navigation of it, especially on the map. Zooming further in = opening up the relevant page is great.

I must be a total idiot, but I don't understand weaknesses and resistances. When the familar has a check next to a type, is that was he is strong against? Or is that the type he himself is? And the x is the weakness? How do I know which types the wild familiars are?

This is a bit confusing to me

Right. Still really loving this game, but the first annoyances in the battle mechanics are starting to show themselves.

Either make the AI controlled characters more intelligent or give us a finer degree of control in their commands, because they tend to waste all of their MP in the first battle they come across.
The game's "gambit" like system a la FFXII isn't complex enough, meaning that any permanent commands you give them result in either them not using any abilities whatsoever or completely wasting their MP before it is actually needed, which causes a lot of sticky situations. The fact that you can't change these "gambits" outside of battle is also irritating.

Also, this problem is made worse by the fact that the MP of your allies aren't shown on the main battle screen. You have to either hover over them with a spell or otherwise to see it.

Might as well go all out and give us a system as complex and useful as FFXII's was, which is odd, cause even the battle system in that game had some major flaws.
It wouldn't need to be quite as complex but give us working options for sparse MP use and making AI controlled familiars actually physically move away from attacks, because they just seem to stand there and take sucker punches to the face.

It's unfortunate because everything else about this game is, to me, absolutely stellar.

Didn't knew that Gold Tokos can be catched. Got one and evolved into Tokotoko.
Damn, scrolls of truth is such a pain in the ass. Reminds me farming Pure Bladestone in Demon's Souls (still haven't got that shit)

I'm level 50 and I'm needing some money. Where should I grind? All the stuff around Perdida runs away from me

If you need some money like asap, go to
the casino and play Platoon. Really easy to win 400k chips in 15 mins. Then buy Great Sage's Secret till you run out of chips, and sell them for 6k each. Mega profit.

I absolutely love this game

Same here. The blu-ray can't hold all the love this game was made with. So much charm, so much fun.

Already put around 20 hours into it, just completed Smoky
The Vulcano, with the big bad uggly flame dude
. Choosing familiars is brutal, man. So many cool ones. Can't choose! :p

Does anybody know how far I am? It feels like I just begun, but the time counter says otherwise, heh.

Where is the casino anyway? (and when do you get access to it?)

You'll encounter a story event that tells you it's being built and how long it will take. Those events are a pretty big clue on when & where, but later you'll bump into an NPC who tells you it's open.

Spoiler with specifics:

You first find out about it in Tombstone Trail, which is about 15 years in the past - they say it will take a decade or so to build. Then you go back to the present, and when you get to the fortress of the Sky Pirates, the very next story segment, there's a skeleton guy hanging out who tells you it's open. It's located right near the start of Tombstone Trail.

That bird is the bird from the opening anime cutscene showing the Second Country. I don't remember if they showed the scene in the PS3 assets though so you probably never noticed lol

Awww. I did miss that. So it's not something you can encounter? Still, kinda cool and unexpected.
