Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch |OT|

Just got the boat, boss spoilers question;
Is it possible to beat Shadar? I was close, but a cutscene activated before I could. Is there any benefit to beating him? or is it a story plot-armor situation?

Nope. You get his health down to a certain level and the cutscene starts.

So, how do you get the
old man
in the cave to drop some Alchemy knowledge? Everytime I go to him he just blathers about how shit I am at Alchemy.

Man I would give anything to be able to set an AI rule for skill uses. I'm tired of my 2 party members draining their magic pool in shitty easy battles. Something like "Use ____ only if MP is >80%".

Yep,tactics should be available in the menu at anytime and the fact that coffee mana refills are so expensive, like everything else in this game where money is hard to get(I havent hit the casino yet)makes it eeven more infuriating when I look at Swaine or Esther and their mana is at 0 after 2 normal battles...thank god for ground pick ups during fights though...

. Absolutely loving this masterpiece of a game.

LOL far from masterpiece, I guess we have been so starved for JRPGs this gen that it could seem that way mind you.

As far as AI goes I have stripped all my party members of spells bar healing ones, kind of defeats the purpose, but had to do something to stop them going through it so fast.

Both kinda suck. If all you're interested in is the story you'd probably need pretty low standards to like either solely for that one aspect. If you factor in the gameplay Valkyria is the clear winner. Since you already have it in your backlog I'd say play that and if you still want something later hit up Ni no Kuni.

Ouch. I might fall under the low standards category :(

It's not without its problems, but I wouldn't strip it of the "masterpiece" title. It really is fucking amazing. I already want a sequel. They can improve on some of the issues the first game had. Getting stuck on allies or other enemies while trying to attack your target is a pretty bad one.

Yea I want a sequel also, I would rank Blue Dragon better than this just because this games battle system is terrible, its a real shame because outside of the battle system the game is actually really well done.

I don't play many RPGs anyway. They usually have to click with me, and not many RPGs achieve this. Final Fantasy VII did this for me as did the first both Golden Sun games. And the first JRPG since then that really clicked with me is Ni no Kuni. For me it's a masterpiece in terms of graphics, style, music, voice overs, gameplay, setting, or in short: Every aspect oft the game combined.

It's too bad there isn't more voice work, after about the half way mark there is almost none, was the JP version like this also ?

It's kinda weird. A full conversation that isn't voiced and then all of sudden ONE line of text is voiced. And then the rest isn't. Very weird choice. Wish it all were voiced

What? Blue Dragon is like Gust-tier garbage. The closest match-up Ni no Kuni has this gen is Lost Odyssey.

Opinions tossed around as fact makes me giggle.

In other news, I haven't been able to play since Friday.... It's killing me.

yeah it seemed like the second half of the game they started running out of $ or something, the values have gone down somewhat.

but it's no problem to me anyway, i don't mind it so much

I loved Blue Dragon! The only jprpg I enjoyed more this gen was Tales Of Vesperia. So far this game seems like it may become my favorite though.

You can't be serious.

Blue Dragon has a great, interesting combat system, a good extension of the FF5 job system, the absolute best implementation of visible encounters in an RPG ever (and I mean it, it's really head-and-shoulders above anything else that tries to do this - I'm continually surprised that the people who claim to hate random battles rarely give this the appreciation it deserves), and it looks really great too. The story is a standard saturday morning shounen cartoon type of deal, but you know what, Ni no Kuni isn't too far from that either.

People actually liked Blue Dragon? Weird. I couldn't get past the first disc. It bored me to death, the screen tearing was killing me. It felt a little TOO dated. It was pretty much archaic in design.

Is Golden Mite weaker than Normal Mite? I remember my normal Mite packing stronger punch around level 10 than Golden Mite. Or is the 2nd similar creature you own get a decrease in stats?

I can't stand Blue Dragon's character design. In fact, I loathe anything with Akira Toriyama's design basically.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

Completely in agreement.

Recommended end-game character level?

My main crew are around level 70, and my familiars around lvl 65. IGN guide suggest lvl 80. Which I find insane

Kave_Man

come in my shame circle
How awesome is it that the whambat I called Wamuu learns wind attacks and turns into a vampire?

So jealous and yes I get the reference.

So fabulous!

My characters were low to mid 70's for the last boss and it was a breeze. I gained a bunch of levels in the last dungeon, too.

Argh I've been in the Glittering Grotto for like an hour now trying to catch an Ice Queen for an errand. This is driving me INSANE.

edit: Also, when would be a good time to evolve my Mighty Mite, Sprout Sprite, Strongo and Dumbelemur into their final forms? They're all early-mid 40s.

I'd evolve them all right now; the stat difference will be minimal and most of their second forms cap in the low 50's anyway.

for real? How have I missed them on my like 30 passes of the area?! @_o

Must have unlucky spawns. I tend to average about 1 on the overworld map each time I go and most of the time the battles spawn 2 of them. I pretty much broke the game by abusing this method but it's fine by me.

Oh okay. I was under the impression that even a few levels could make a big difference in the end haha oops >_>

slayn

needs to show more effort.
I've now finished this game and I have to say I really don't think it was very good. Maybe I'm just too old for it at this point but I don't feel the story and writing had the level of intelligence required for an all ages appeal the way Disney or Pixar can create an all ages story.

The combat grew old and I'm incredibly thankful I figured out how to completely avoid it (just cast levitate constantly). I think I would have preferred a completely turn based system where I had complete control over everything that was happening.

The visuals and music were great and what little voice acting there was was good. I was pretty disappointed and how little of it was voiced in the end.

The combat was probably the worst part of the game. It was just so... exploitable. All of the boss attacks are these big moves with huge windups that give you plenty of time to switch to a creature with evade to dodge it and there was very little synergy or interaction with the different creatures. I found it to be a chose almost the entire way through.

It wasn't a bad game and the attention to detail in many areas was fucking impressive but overall I consider it a pretty mediocre jRPG.

Blech. Still haven't opened it and am considering returning it. This isn't helping.
