Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch |OT|

Esther keeps on dying because she keeps using magic even if it's not needed, then when it's needed she has 0 mp. What the fuck.

I gave up on trying to keep her alive anymore since everyone still gets the experience and you can heal after the battle is over.

Level 17 or 18 and I just learned how to capture familiars. Please tell me the creatures in the southern desert region (on the plateaus) are simply just really tough and you arent able to beat them at the moment. I am getting my ass wasted.

Anyone know how you get into Perdida? Is it from story? Also, can I get better weapons/armors from where I am?

I just beat the snake in the vault of tears for 1 of the magic stones

About to finish up at the coast and get my boat. (
doing the cheese quest now for the Cowlipha
)

Any familiars I should try to pick up on all these islands? I'm level 28 (been grinding as a result of trying to catch a Little Bighorn and Bonehead) and should be able to handle some stronger enemies at this point with my second metamorph Lvl 22 Mite for Oliver and Lvl 29 Drongo on Esther.

The Purrloiner is pretty good (you can catch him south of the desert but north of Castaway Cover). I actually haven't tried catching any of the aquatic familiars, some seem cool though.

You are going to be a bit over leveled for awhile now, I wouldn't worry about it. However, I would make the effort to pick up a Megalift. If you haven't got the Griffy, he is the best tank in the game at that point. Does nothing for damage but can take all kinds of (physical) hits. It might be worth putting points into his magic defense as well, cause he does get hurt pretty bad by those, but overall he is a trooper.

Overall the game is great, but man the AI and combat experience ruins a lot of that fun. Here in a nutshell is the problem (gameplay spoilers for people who want to be totally unsurprised):
Game scenario, I've got Oliver on heals, Esther on attack, and Swaine on defense. Esther has the Griffin, and Lemus, Swaine has Megalith and Tin-Man, and Oliver has all casters. In a perfect world, I could set Oliver to "Keep us Healthy", and he'd just spam heals and the occassional magic attack; Esther goes all out with her familiars Psyche Up! abilities, while Swaine uses the two tanks to Yoo-Hoo and Defend. That's what happens in a perfect world. In Ni No Kuni, because you can only ever assign "overall. . ." game behavior and not specific abilities, Swaine will attempt to have the Megalith (who does 1 point of dmg) attack and not defend. Esther will more than likely never use Psyche Up!, instead spamming Sharp Fangs every chance she gets. Oliver will no doubt do a good job, though he will still have the capability to fuck up his mana (because Keep Us Healthy only prioritizes heals, and doesn't exclude use of other spells). This wouldn't be a problem if you could (in a sense) queue up abilities for your familiars instead of losing control completely when you aren't directly controlling them.

It's interesting that you've relegated Oliver to healing duty. Is there any reason for that? Is it because of Griffy being Esther's preferred genus and being a good physical attacker? Her preferred genus list in general lends her toward being a healer, I think, and Oliver's more oriented toward physical attacking with his.

Also, if you're not controlling Oliver, you have to switch to someone else at the start of every battle, right? I would be more inclined to want to control someone else if I could set another character as the default. (._. )

As expected, the download speed is ranging from 100 kB/s to 1.3 MB/s... I hope it's getting more constant. Btw: why are there 2 downloads? ( one is 6 GB and the other 16 GB) do I need both?

Which is insane given (at least 40 hours into the game) that Oliver has the significantly higher mana pool. I've been using Oliver for mostly heals and magic attacks simply because Esther seems intent on falling back on her own skill set otherwise. With the setup I have, there's no real reason Esther should be using her own skills except to give (smart) buffs - which she never does.

I also haven't found any point to using familiars that the characters have affinity for. If there is a gameplay reason to do this, the game has done a pisspoor job of communicating it.

Yeah, the game never tells you. I believe the community is saying it is a +10% to stats which isn't really something to ignore IMO.

This game has consumed me.

I also dropped Mitey and went with that cat. Puss is Boots totally annihilates enemies. So fast and so strong *.*

And yeah, Esther likes to deplete her mp just for the sake of it. Healing me with mp slurping spells when it's not needed to. This really gets annoying in the
colisseum
where you can't use items. Esther depletes her mp during first round most of the time jeeesus

I also found the Toko's and did some good old grindan. Comes really in handy when you want to lvl up familiars at a fast pace.

And I really suck at the
casino
too. I want those items but I ALWAYS lose. Don't think I've ever scored more than 1500 chips.

I've not really had a problem with Esther's AI in terms of buffing/healing once I set her on "provide backup." She takes care of healing/buffing really well, although on occasion she'll have her drongo throw out offensive magic, which is annoying but I could easily fix it by removing those skills from the list if I wanted to.

And yeah there's a stat boost if you're using the preferred genus.

Oliver is a sucky healer. Does he ever get better healing spells? I still have the one from the start of the game, heals like 30hp.

I use GoGo for healing.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch |OT| of Beware the Spoiler-Filled Autoplay Movie

I had been avoiding reading about this one and then when I loaded it up and was getting food ready, I let it sit at that intro screen for too long. Wow, did they ever cram a lot of spoilers into that little movie, lol. My poor innocent brain.

Is there an official name for those movies? I remember something like Attract mode for arcade games.

Finished downloading yesterday and am currently a couple hours in. I'm not sure if this game will maintain this momentum, but so far it has charmed the hell out of me. Seems like a real easy going kind of JRPG with amazing art and a genuinely engaging story. If this keeps up, I might already have my goty.

Where is the

the sage mentioned it but i can't find it :(
Or maybe i am becoming crazy and i imagined it lol

I am so in love with this game. I'm taking it slow and just enjoying the innocent nature of everything. I had kind of a rough end of the year and this game is just what I needed.

Has anyone in here used the Golden Mite and Golden Drongo? Are there any stat changes or is it just the color that's different? It's hard to find information online about them :(

Well, I just got killed by the super secret hidden post game clear boss, but it was more of a case of being unlucky rather than it being really hard.
It's really lame how basically all the post game bosses are palette swaps of every boss you fought before, including the final one.
EDIT: JEEPERS!!! I beat him, and I totally wasn't expecting the reward you get from beating him. In fact, the reward might be the best reward from beating a secret boss in a game ever.

Not sure about those, but I compared Hurleys and the Gold one had higher attack, but lower defense, so I'm sure it's similar to other familiars where you can have the same ones with different stats.

Just started it but holy shit fuck the trial of friendship. Good lord I hope the other ones aren't like this.

Back at it then.

Can anyone explain the All-in Defense and All-in Attack? I was hoping it'd be a hotkey to force my familiar to quickly switch to defend mode but it doesn't seem that's how it works.

Also, Griffey levels so slow but is far and above my most powerful familiar. Any suggestions on familiars to catch that are comparable? I am getting tired of only using Griffey

All-out Defense puts everyone on defense expect the current character/familiar you are using. So you still need to make sure they defend.

They're not all like that.

I had this game preordered without even trying the demo, but today I rectified that. Fun stuff, can't wait for my copy to arrive now. Was also surprised to see how smoothly it was running, and without tearing to boot, though the game seemed a bit low-res (i.e. nasty aliasing around the main character etc.). Has any outlet done a tech analysis of this game yet?

In terms of what? I am about 50 hours in and NO familiars tower over Griffy in terms of his stats. I mean he sucks at magic, but everything else is nasty. At best you can find familiars who are well and above in one stat (the Megalith for example that you can get fairly early on is ridiculous at defense - but garbage at everything else).

So will they use their defend skills if their familiar has it

I think they also will go into defense if their familiar can't. I have yet to see them not defend, and have seen both familiar and party members defend. So it can't be a cowinkydink.

I suppose in just general usefulness. I've been having to find excuses to use Smitey but he feels so weak in comparison despite being very well equipped and double griffeys level.

I can't seem to find a use for pure magic attack familiars as mp is so scare and I typically save as much as possible to heal my idiot teammates after a fight

I HATE YOU BANANA THING. Can't capture it to save my life.

Yeah, they only have a 6% chance of being tamed... I think it took me 50 tries to finally get one. First time I fought a Yellow Buncher, though... I could do nothing but laugh at that point.

This is a great game, but Esther is the worst character in gaming. Scumbag grabs all the orbs (snatches and then wastes the gold ones). Her actions are often more damaging than the enemies.
