I really like Platoon. It's the best game in a casino in an RPG I've ever seen, I think. There's a real element of strategy that actually makes sense to me, I find it generally pretty easy to predict how the opponent will act.

Ya not as random as blackjack or nasty slot machines! :)

An hour in and the game has froze twice on me at the end of a battle. I googled it and it seems a lot of people are having this issue. I'm holding off until a patch is released. Both times it froze I had to do a hard reset.

I've started taking it slowly. I cash out if I win about 40k, which seems to be something I can reliably reproduce. Now I've got a fair bit of winnings~
I'm sure I'll start taking risks again soon though. :(

The controls suck ass. If you don't agree, you haven't played far enough. If you played far enough and you still don't agree, then I don't agree with you.

Game is opening up a bit since I unlocked familiar morphing now. Although I wasn't very pleased it forced me to evolve my mite bro since I only have 2 real offensive familiars right now and him going back to level 1 kind of sets me back a little right now. I have to get him to around level 10-12 to get his stats back to where they were as a 15-16.

He should level up pretty fast though, doesn't take them long to catch up when they are evolved.

I really hate quest 78. It's one of those typical things that require super ultra rare items that only certain super rare enemies drop very infrequently. I really wanted to do everything in the game but I can never do things like that. :l

Is 78 the one that requires embers tone? I had four of them by the time I did it. The guide even states they are rare 12% chance to drop

I hear you. I'm trying to get an item from a beachhead, for someone, and it just won't drop.

How do familiars work in this game? Like Pokemon? Catch one, level it up? Does it learn new moves? Does it evolve?

I saw part of a playthrough and I noticed you could take control of the familiar. Is that right? What hapens to your own character if you take control of a familiar?

Also, what about the two other characters you're with. Are they controllable or automated?

You catch them and level them up. They learn new 'tricks'/movies. They do evolve, but after each evolution, they go back to level 1.

That is right about controlling the Familiar. Your character is essentially 'safe' when switched to the Familar since he totally disappears off screen, but you share HP/MP gauges.

You can switch to the other two characters but for the most part, they are controlled by the AI and apparently quite horribly so since the AI is not very good.

You 'Serenade' (basically force familiars to join your team) once they are knocked out with a heart above their heads. After the battle you name them, and keep them. You can level them up, evolve them with certain items, and they learn new abilities. You can also feed them certain items to help them grow in certain categories such as attack, and defense. They can also be equipped with weapons, shields/armor, and accessories.

As far as battle you swap out between your main character and your familiars. The familiars have stamina bars which determine how long they can be in battle. You can swap back and forth between three familiars or your main. You can also swap between your main character and the other characters.

Basically, when you switch main characters the other 'main' character becomes automated which can be slightly tailored with commands.

No, it's a post-game one. The only one I've yet to do, too! It requires you to do this axe, and after you do it you have to do another axe which requires some really rare items. Namely kaleidostones and scrolls of truth. Both of those items are dropped only by the new familiars that appear in the game's dungeons after you beat it and both have low drop rates. It doesn't help that the monsters themselves are rare.

After a certain point in the game you get the ability to tame them. This occurs randomly after you defeat a monster, though there are ways to increase the chance of it happening. Each familiar has a starting stage, a second evolution and two different third ones. Each form has a different look and stats, the first ones obviously are worse than the final ones. Every time you have it evolve the familiar's level drops back to level 1 but even then it's better than what its previous stage was at level 1.

In battle when you take control of a familiar the character just stands there cheering and directing, at any point in battle you can stop controlling the familiar and control the character instead. The familiar and the character currently in possession of it share their HP and MP but not the rest of their stats.

The other characters are controlled by the AI but you can give them a few directions, or control them instead of your current leader at any time.

I can't believe just how much time is eaten away in this game through cutscenes and the dialogue. I started over at around level 45, with 33 hours played. I'm level 40, close to the same point where I quit with only 12 hours played, skipping every available scene that could be skipped.

Any good place for lvl 38ish grinding? :)

Duck island. It's the island NW of Ding Dong Dell. Simply farm the Toko enemies (they give 2500 xp). Just stand around the eastern part of the island, somewhat close to the edge, save your game and then use the gate spell to reset the enemy types.

Although honestly, grinding is not necessary at that level. But if you must...that's the place to do it.

The controls suck ass. If you don't agree, you haven't played far enough. If you played far enough and you still don't agree, then I don't agree with you.

The controls do indeed suck all kinds of ass. The whole trying to be real time, yet turn based with horribly controlled party members (the tactics you select rarely make a difference aside from "don't use abilities" since they never stick with it) just doesn't cut it. The game is easy enough to just muscle your way through any rough spots though, or simply devolve it down to Oliver finishing off every boss solo. The only thing that keeps me playing is to simply finish it and get it over with; plus the visuals. The gameplay itself though isn't so great.

Well, that doesn't use ink. I guess they just didn't want to waste color ink on the standard version. I don't know.

It seems to be pretty common with Namco Bandai games that have Limited Editions. The regular presses = black and white, while the limited ones are in full color with different treatments. Anything to save, even when it comes to cents, I guess?

If you want increased stats when you level, then use. It'll still raise for levels, but not as much if you raise the stats by food.
So how much should I feed them? Till their hearts are full? Should I just focus on one or two stats? Game is getting tougher and I feel like me neglecting this system is part of why Im getting my ass kicked a lot.

Well. You don't want to feed attack food to magic users, and you don't want to feed magic to attack users. I guess they do have magic attacks in their lineup. But that is what I've been doing.

I didn't mess with the heart thing, but I did max out the growth on most of mine, 20/20.

Same here. If they have a high level stat, such as evasion, I will focus on that mixed in with the favorite. Only level 25 though so I don't know if I'm doing it right either.

Just focus on either enhancing what your familiars are already good at, or use food to shore up some painfully obvious weaknesses. For example, with Esther's default familiar, just raise it's magic attack as much as you can, and then supplement it with defense. It's not a melee attacker, so you don't need to worry about that, and it already has a high magic resist. You can actually max their (alternate) stats prior to opening up a new max level through hearts. After that, just feed it it's favorite snack type for the heart bonus.

How do you know their favorite food? I didn't even know they had one, lol.

The Wizard compendium tells you what their favorite food is under the starting genus section for each new genus.

oh god boss battle glitch at fairyground
Royal Jelly

as i was swapping out a familiar the boss attacks me and knocks me out of the battle area which caused oliver to die and as the familiar came out he died there too. fml. boss was almost dead too.

I open the telling stone, and look if they are milites, bestiae, etc. Then i open the wizard's companion and look over familiars, on the 1st paragraph i see the favorite food :3

Where does it tell you what their favourite food is? I know mitey loves him some chocolate bars with the cry and hearts he makes.

Edit: oh shit, I totally forgot about the wizards companion.

Oh. I guess that gives them hearts too? I never read that section.

They get the highest heart bonus from their favorite snack. I think they might have a second favorite, or maybe every other snack will eventually give them some heart bonus, but at a much slower rate.

BTW, Griffy = stupidlybrokenoverpowered. He's like one of the dino creatures that you can't get until much later on physically, yet he's also your best area of effect caster early on. His stat growth seems to be +50% of every other type of familiar too.

Kinda disappointed I don't have Griffy because he looks awesome. But if he is game breakingly good maybe it's a good thing.

Also, looking for bigger familiars for my team in general. I have Hurly and Bonehead's evolution and eying a Tin Man but most of my team are little cute things. That was great for the early part of the game but I want to mix it up now. Any suggestions? Story-wise I am in Hamelin.

It's one of the few familiars that Esther can use that does not completely suck. Most of the decent familiars she can use are magic based, and they are like wet noodles.

I put her on back up from the tatics menu. And when you need a right now heal just go into defensive mode by square, and she will heal. Still users her MP like candy though. I'd do anything for a no mp item.

I think I've finally got the worst familiar in the game. Sasquatch.

I metamorphed him, and trained him like crazy but he's still terrible. He can't put armor on which makes his defense terrible (he usually dies within 4-6 hits), and he attacks and moves very slowly which makes him useless. Even his high attack is useless if you can barely hit the target or survive long enough to do damage to the target.

Anybody else tried this familiar? He has one of my favorite familiar designs but he's just unplayable for me.

Esther can use any familiar. Anybody can use any familiar, just that some types get certain bonuses with certain characters, but I don't think they're really that important.

Just when I think this game can't get any more awesome, I get
to fly around on a motherfucking dragon
.
Something even more awesome happens after you beat the secret boss O:

Voice work in this game is so incredibly inconsistent between certain characters, it's a shame.

Rest of the game has been a peach, though. First Level-5 production, outside of contract work on DQ that I've enjoyed since Dark Cloud 2 and it's certainly better than that.... Although I still want a Dark Cloud 3.

Wtf, never knew I was such a gambler. Just spend almost one hour playing the slot machines. And I still haven't earned more than 5000 chips. That game is pretty fun, but it's a time waster.

Time to move over to the blackjack and platoon tables...

Can I buy all the casino prizes elswhere? I really want those familiar tickets
