I saw this on the IGN boards (thx TrueDoogie)... pretty neat video. It contains spoilers so don't watch it if you haven't beat it yet. Might be old, it's the first time I see it.
Pretty cool... I was almost done with the game before I had to return it and never got to see the ending or that huge creature so this was nice. The combat wasn't so great and the f'd up MGS but I thought this was a pretty fine game. My favorite scenario was the one in the cathedral during WW2 (1?) That place was creepy as hell.
I can't understand why people bash ED. It was a great game with one of the best plots this gen. Great atmosphere too. I'm still pissed at Nintendo for letting SK go. And oh god the video is GREAT.
Seriously, this is the best game this generation IMO. I don't understand the hate either. The game got 9.4 at GS and 9.6 at IGN. Plus it got multiple GOTY awards, including the "Outstanding Achievement in Game Design" at AIAA 2002. Anyone who likes story driven adventure games will love this.
Enough with the praise though... that video is really cool, it makes me wanna beat the game for the fourth time.
I can't stop watching the vid. When I finish watching it I'll send him a thanking email. I mean this stuff is great. Btw I feel stupid for selling the game. I'll probably buy it again cos I've missed it so much.
ED is still one of my favorite games of this generation and one of the most underrated games out there (along with Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy)
I really hope the rumors of Too Human becoming a sequel to ED are true, I'd squeal like a high school cheerleader if that ends up being true
question who owns the rights to the ED characters and story, I've heard people say SK (which is what I would expect) and I've heard people say Nintendo
You know, this just reminds me of how much SK got right with the game, but equally, how much it got wrong.
Great graphics generally, but I just don't understand how some of the character models can look so poor compared to others. Especially Alex. Pretty good dialogue, with the occassional cheesy lines, same goes for the voice acting. Music and sound are awesome...I have no negative for this one. One of the best soundtracks this gen. Atmosphere was nice, but not nearly scary enough for a game like this. There's that moment early on with
the bathtub
and I think that's about it for scares. I can't remember them doing that sort of thing again in the whole game, god knows why. A decent length to the game; the combat was average at best, but had an enjoyable magic system. All in all an above average game which should have been great.
I'm sure you've noticed I haven't mentioned the plot. I just wasn't impressed. Now if I was looking at it just as a videogame, if the plot hadn't been hyped to hell and back and I'd gone into it not even knowing if there was an attempt at telling a decent story or not, I'd have probably been happier. That's because as stories go in games, that's pretty good. As stories go across all mediums, it's crap.
Denis Dyack claims that games will be bigger than movies and that games are the ultimate storytelling medium (I don't agree with this last bit, games require a certain level of challenge, and no matter where you set that level, even if you put in multiple levels, there will always be people unable to get through it. Books, movies/TV, plays: these can all be finished by anyone [assuming you can read], you will get to the hear the story if you want to, not so with games. Anyway, back to the point), and maybe he'll turn out right, but on the evidence of this showing, SK aren't going to be the ones to show it. it's clear that they're trying in the games presentation, the effort shows through, but it's not getting anywhere near even the most average of books. Maybe it's near an average movie plot, it's so different to a movie plot that it's hard to compare, but it certainly isn't comparable to a good one.
I think one of the main problems with the story is SK's choice of having...was it 12 characters? It's been a long time since I played, but it was around there anyway. I understand why there are that many characters, it's needed as it's going through time, but it's too many in a short space of time for me to actually care what happens to them. Let's take
Ellia
for example
(she's the girl you play as quite early on. Long time ago, was a dancer or something, liked reading got trapped in a temple). Now Ellia is killed, or supposedly killed, I can't remember exactly, at the end of her chapter by Pious. Now I'm a guy who gets upset a hell of a lot more at things in movies or books etc. than I do in real life. I don't know why, it's pathetic. Just rest assured that it's not hard to make me cry. But this character's death, a good guy's death, the death of the character you've been playing as, didn't affect me at all. And it's obvious why: I didn't care about her. I didn't care about any of the characters. I get about 2 hours with each of them (estimate, Alex more) and hardly any dialogue. Rarely any interaction with others. If I don't care about the characters, it doesn't matter how good the story is (not that the stroy was that great...something bad happens: it was Pious, something else bad happens: oh look, it was Pious, a third bad thing happens: here's a shocker, it was Pious...in disguise! Not even the twist at the end saved this one). In fact I'd prefer a simple story, something as simple as OoT for example, with characters I care about, than a good story with ones I don't. Of course both both should be good and intertwined, but if I have to lose one it's the story every time.
I'm listening to the soundtrack right now. Steve Henifin must be one of the best composers ever. I whish there was a soundtrack for Twin Snakes as well
I think I know what you're talking about, and it's not in the church. It's when you're playing as Edward in the Undercity. When you're in one of the rooms, if you run around on a colored square, you get the illusion that a giant worm comes to eat you.
Oh...that one always happens. You can't not avoid it.
The one I didn't get until my second time through is the one as Maximillian, you climb down the ladder, and suddenly you're in prison. I guess it makes sense that I'd see it my second time through, since the first time through I wouldn't understand it.
I believe that would actually raise the price. Many places were selling it anywhere from $4.99 to $14.99. I'm not sure if it's still widely availble due to the fact it sold like shit.
Watching that video, I just realized that Alexandra is voiced by the same actor for Naomi Hunter in MGS, had to imdb it because I couldn't put my finger on who it was, I knew the voice so well and I knew I heard it recently (Twin Snakes).
Checking her page on IMDB revealed how MANY video games she voice acted for! I guess that's not uncommon; using the same [good] actors again and again in different video games.
Naked Snake: There are many voice actors from ED that's in MGS:TTS, MGS2 and MGS3. Just for example.
Michael Bell (The Fear MGS3 / Peter Jacob ED)
Cam Clarke (Liquid MGS2 / Anthony ED)
Richard Doyle (The Fury MGS3 / Pious ED)
Greg Eagles (Peter Stillman MGS2 / Michael Edwards ED)
Paul Eiding (Colonel Campbell MGS2 / Paul Luther ED)
David Hayter (Snake MGS2, MGS3 / Roman Legionnaire ED)
Kim Mai Guest (Mei Ling MGS2, MGS:TTS / Ellia ED)
Neil Ross (Colonel Volgin MGS3 / Edwin Lindsey ED)
I had David Bowie all cued up and ready to go but I carried on listening to that Evanesence song. I feel like I should punish myself.
I thought ED was okay, although the final ending was crappy, and had I known what it would be I wouldn't have bothered dragging myself through the game for a third time (it had really lost steam by the second playthrough.
I agree about there too many characters. And that whole thing with the 9 circle magic was tedious one time through, almost unbearable a second time through, especially with the electrified floor.
Also at times it creaked under the weight of trying to be too clever for its own good. When they used the word 'flensed' to describe what happened to the arabian princes. Points for obscurity? Yes. A fitting description? Yes. But as Edge put it 'why is a 6th century Persian Princess using Danish hunting slang'. Also the whole 'we put real Latin in the game' thing that they liked to point out pre-release. Aye for 2 seconds before the english translation faded in and took over. What's the point? The only one I can see is so that they can jerk off over how clever they are.
I'm not even going to go into how their idea of making names sound ancient and mysterious, was to give them all 7 apostrophes, okay a slight exageration, but you get the point.
Cool vid ! I bought this game a few months ago for like 10$ not really knowing what to expect and I couldn't believe my luck afterwards ! This game really kicked ass.. I just couldn't put it down before finishing it three times for the real ending.
My only gripes with it is that some of the levels aren't as good as others ( I really hate the Lindsey one with that crapload of annoying traps... ) and it gets all too easy once you know how to use the spells.
Still... Michael Edwards level + assault rifle on full auto + Eternal Mode = BEST ZOMBIE ASS-KICKING FUN EVER.

Hey, TrueDoogie here, I tried to register but couldnt, I'd just like to say I truly appreciate your support! And to all of the Evanescence haters, could you at least see the video once before judging it's crap?
Ed was great I fell for the hype when it was releashed and i have no qualms what se ever. One of the best 50 dollars i've spent on a game. I already beaten the game twice and i was half way through my 3rd time when i just stopped. Maybe i should finish it but i have too many games i havn't played yet. I forgot what happens the third time you beat the game anyone know?
