NieR Automata Xbox One UPDATE: Why NieR sequel won't be coming to Microsoft's console

If they were developing it on PC and then porting to PS4 then why would they announce the PC version a year after announcing the game for PS4 and why would they release the game for PC well after they release the PS4 version?

Just doesn't make any sense.

Because Sony moneyhatted it.

All you need is enough folks to buy it to make a profit on porting it. They don't have to sell a crazy amount for that.

Which likely won't happen. Hence they are not porting it.

I mean, what other reason would they have? You think they pass on extra money just because?
No. It's business, and you invest your money on the consoles where you can see a decent return on your investment.

If you're talking about my post in this thread, I was just joking about the PC version being MIA.

Nah I'm talking about posters like that in general who invade every thread and portbeg. No one here has done it so far and I'm aware you're all joking. No worries.

Not shocking. While I'm sure there are some Xbox only people who would love to play it, the audience is overwhelmingly on PS4. At the very least there is going to be another option to get your hands on it if own a decent PC.

How did the original Nier sell on the 360 last gen?

If the sales split was anything like many Japanese games this gen then it only adds weight to their decision.

Yeah they really need to land a megahit like...Nier...Automata to make up for that loss.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's just shovelware after all.

Perhaps it wouldn't even be able to do that? Of course, that isn't necessarily enough for a port either. If it can only make up the costs for the port, that money could just go elsewhere because the dev/pub probably wants more return than that. I'm not saying that is always the case but it is something to consider.

why don't they just do what they did with ffs13 and have it be exclusive to playstation and japan and multiplatform in the west

Ports cost money. And why would they port a game that is already going to tank to a platform where it will tank even more.

No hope then? My clique mostly consists of Xbox players and one of them was really hoping that Automata would make its way to the platform. Sucks.

Because that costs basically the same amount of money as releasing it in Japan? They save money by not doing the port that won't sell, if they went ahead and made an Xbox one version they might as well put it out everywhere.

Who called that game shovelware?

Doesn't the US and Europe routinely buy way more games, even the Japanese ones than Japan does? Yeah, stop with the bullshit.

Are we just going to ignore the comment in the Phil Spencer goes to Japan thread now?

My comment about how developers put games out when the market is there and how it has nothing to do with personal relationships?

I'm sorry you didn't understand the context of that post and read what you wanted to read. Or my post early in this thread about how I want to get this on PC.

Starting development on PC doesn't mean that they were simultaneously developing PC and PS4 versions or that they developed the game for PC and then ported it later to PS4.

Because if they were doing either one of those then their actions certainly don't match their words.

we actually start creating our games now on high-spec PCs and then optimize for the different consoles we release on. Since we already thought about releasing on Steam from the get-go, we'd already built the game in such a way that it would play on PC.

Straight from the horse mouth.

It's a bummer that the XB1 isn't getting the game because of Japanese sales. I guess Square Enix isn't really interested in what it's going to do outside of Japan. Hopefully this means the PC version gets released sooner rather than later. With them being fairly silent about it, one does have to wonder.

You think they are missing a lot of sales outside of Japan ?
Big Japanese games have software sales split around 20-25% Xbox 75-80% PS4 and that's UK and USA - which makes that best case for Microsoft.

I hope the game does well because it looks awesome and the demo was great. Obviously the Xbox version was never going to happen. I bet we see the PC version before the end of the year.

Ill be playing it after I finish Horizon for sure.

Not surprising whatsoever and if anything, is expected.

Personally, if im Microsoft, I stick with Gears of War, Halo, Halo Wars, Forza Motorsport, Forza Horizon and State of Decay franchises and that's it.

Wouldn't waste any money, time or resources on anything else simply because good or bad, other exclusives don't get purchased by those who own an Xbox One let alone anyone who doesn't running out to buy an Xbox One just for an exclusive.

Ah I see you later elaborated
or backtracked
and said it was in jest. If that's the case then ignore me while I enjoy my shovelware.

Only really the big ones like Resident Evil, FF & KH.

Not Nier, Nier main audience at least for console side is Japan.

Not hyperbole. It's what I would actually do. No point in wasting money, time and resources into exclusives that not even it's own fan base will buy. Seriously, I don't blame Microsoft for cancelling Scalebound as Platinum Games isn't as good as everyone thinks they are and they take on way too many projects at the same time. Since Microsoft funded the game, Platinum didn't lose a damn thing except their own personal time which is their own fault for taking on so many projects at one time to begin with.

As for Nier, I played the demo and im definitely interested in it and while based on the demo, appears to be a good game, it's a niche title and won't sell that much to begin with on PS4 so imagine how little it will sell on Xbox One.

I would even go a step further - after Scorpio (and only because it's an Xbox One mid-gen console), I wouldn't release any future consoles in any region outside of North America and Europe as there's simply no point in doing so as again, they don't sell. And since you can have consoles be region free, this negative doesn't even matter.
