Now it is cheaper (sometimes), easier and more effective to just pick the current most influencer/streamer, give him the game and play it so people will just get it (even if they dont play it, a sold unit is a sold unit).

All you need to do now is wait for the game to come out, see if the servers hold up, and how matchmaking works. That's it. Some of us have already, a limited beta network test, but still.
It absolutely does work, especially on a younger audience. Think back to how much dumb shit you wasted money on as a child because you were exposed to it, and it was available. This game is a perfect cash grab using a well known franchise and phenomenon, a developer people trust, and a multiplayer game designed to get your friends to join in on. Whether it turns out excellent or abysmal, I fully believe the game will be a financial success - it's just a matter of how large of one, and who the audience will be.
