Nintendo 3DS Japanese Launch Thread

Do you guys think The 3ds will be scarce enough that price gouging will occur on ebay like the ps3?
Did that even happen with the 360, or were there enough units?

360's were really hard to find, for months. I think I got mine in February or March of 2006 (it came out in Nov 2005 if memory serves), and I had to buy a Sam's Club membership just to get it.

Hard to predict how it's going to go with the 3DS but if you want one I'd play it safe and preorder it.

Maybe the engine simply couldn't handle having the background characters animate? I'm sure there is a good reason for why the stuff is the way it is.

It's more likely that time concerns and wanting to get the more important features right were to blame. Launch titles are typically developed on notoriously tight schedules, on unfamiliar hardware, and at some point sacrifices have to be made to get a game out the door in time for that crucial launch week.

Given that Capcom were already juggling getting a fully-featured console fighter onto a handheld, adding StreetPass modes and balancing online, and trying to get the game running at 30fps/60fps in 3D/2D modes I expect some things just slid down the list. If getting animated backgrounds in meant framerates took a hit and they didn't have time to optimise, then they got ditched.

I expect that - given another few months dev time - little bits of polish like that would have been possible, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if we start seeing devs like Capcom hitting 60fps/60fps in 3D/2D in their second- or third-gen 3DS titles, but launch games just don't end up getting that time and attention.

My take is:

1) To have animated background without impacting much performance of the game on 3DS they would have to redesign them but then the game wouldn't be there at launch.

2) Backgrounds that lack animations help the player to focus on the two fighters when on 3D mode.

EDIT:
Cosmonaut said it better than me.

I am 90% sure that their engine wasn't sufficiently tweaked to allow moving backgrounds and maintain a relatively stable frame rate. And I am referring to Capcom's engine and Capcom's tweaking. And I believe with more time this would probably have been overcome. For the time being we can act like these battles are taking place in a rift in the time space continuum.
Edit: And I am basing this off of my ass.

And what about focus on the fighters in 3d? I can't believe that's cause of power or time, animate 3 people in the background should not be hard time.

I'm alright, and I've heard from sprsk, cvx, DCharlie, and Vinnk. Thanks.

It was a rather big earthquake. Most of my co-workers hadn't ever been through such a big one. Now all of the trains are stopped.

Stay safe, guys.

I'm going to to walk over to the Chicago demo kiosk/booth/thing on my lunch break. It's about a mile from my office so I figure I'll get about a half hour to spend trying stuff out. Any particulars things I should look for? My impressions are really going to help decide whether or not I cancel my preorder.

Technically... could SFIV 3DS be patched later to allow animated backgrounds?
what's your god damn obsession with patches man! YES THEY CAN BE PATCHED WHO CARES

anyway, hope J-land gets a swift recovery, it was pretty bad for us last year.

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but has anyone tried transferring their DSi/DSiXL Shop purchases to the 3DS yet? How does it work? (Or does it?)

EDIT: Nevermind. I see that it's not possible until the firmware is updated in May. Which leads me to another question: does anyone know how they will be transferred? Will I need the files on an SD card, or will Nintendo use my Club Nintendo data to allow me to simply re-download the games?

Can't believe all the moaning about something so trivial
To all the people complaining that SSF4 doesn't have animated backgrounds.
Don't like it - don't buy it
It's too late for this one
Either enjoy the fantastic game we have been given or wait for the next iteration in the series and hope that they have more time next time

No-one knows yet, but it would probably be safest to avoid trading in your DSi/DSiXL until Nintendo say how the transfer will be carried out. It may be possible to do without having access to the DSi you purchased the games/apps on, but it's also entirely possible you'd need to download a transfer application to it (perhaps one that then logs and verifies your DSiWare and generates a one-use code to allow you to redownload it on the 3DS?) so it's probably best not to get rid of it just yet.

My obsession is because I hate how too many Wii games with bugs didn't have any solution. Well, the only solutions were to send your disc to Nintendo (or other companies) and get a replacement disc. See Super Paper Mario, Twilight Princess and many more.

You've been answered many times, yet you keep asking.

Pretty excited to get a hands-on this Sunday at PAX East. Hopefully some fellow Bostonians/visitors will post their impressions here today and tomorrow to whet the appetite :)

This is interesting, but I'm not sure if I'm reading it right.

Thank you for posting that! I'm betting new dungeons and maybe a new weapon. Maybe the so rumored dungeon Temple of Light back 1999.

Believe!

Think of it this way, you are developing a fighting game, you've got one month until launch, which do you spend your last days on: making sure the game runs at a solid framerate so the gameplay is perfectly ported, or making sure a couple guys in the background are accurately shaking their fists? Gameplay trumps stupid things like animated characters in the background any day. And by making them non-animated, they could get away with only using one or two polygons each, so they didn't negatively affect the game's performance.

All reports are that the gameplay *is* perfect, that the game's got solid online play that just works without any hassle or excessive lag, and is packed full of features. It's by far the most complete and polished third-party launch title. I think most people would be willing to sacrifice a few animated elephants for that :)

I will admit, it's hilarious fighting in 3D mode next to a hippo with its gaping mouth open the whole time.

They've already said NO new dungeons so unless they were lying for great surprise, there are going to be no new dungeons.

I wonder how the Earthquake affects sales of games and hardware a few days from now and Japan's economy overall?

the next few weeks of media create should be interesting after a crazy event like that

I'm going to guess the extra content in OoT is a collection of 3DS-centric mini-games, similar to the (quite thorough) collection on Super Mario 64 DS and NSMBDS.

Considering the number of cars/buildings you can see being absolutely destroyed, yeah, I imagine game buying will take a backseat in the coming weeks/months.

Pretty terrifying that for all our technology we still can't predict such catastrophes.

Of course. There are other needs to pay for there now. The money that would have gone to a game console might need to go to fixing a roof or getting your car out of the bay.

Especially with a quake as big as that one, expect it to have at least some impact on Japan.

I love how Nintendo has translated everything in the 3DS OS and stuff. It's so much jolly and fun when it's not 100% sterile.
Jolly OS? Sounds good!

For OoT 3D, I predict a new sidequest tied to StreetPass.
A new trading sequence acutally sounds reasonable. The game also seems to already be using every feature of the system EXCEPT StreetPass (well, and the camera...WAIT! Maybe there will be a camera in Oot? :p)The way Miyamoto said that there was new stuff in the Iwata Asks sounds a little too suspicious to be just the camera stuff.

I am excited for the 3DS and OoT 3D...surprising, I know.
