Nintendo 3DS Japanese Launch Thread

OMG OMG OMG
I finally got to see the 3DS today in person. They are already selling it in Hong Kong.
Everyone is playing one in the store.

The Aqua Blue is waaaay darker/sharper than picture. Not the soft tone I was hoping for. :(
But the system is still very sexy in person. It doesn't look cheap like the original DS at all. The glossy plastic and screen make it look expensive. And the graphics is fantastic and the 3D is pretty neat.

Leaked consumer photos.

Except Ridge Racer on PSP was a graphical showcase for the PSP hardware, and remains better looking than RR 3DS. You can make excuses for it as you would, but that's not acceptable

Plus, since I'm turning off 3D for all games I play, i need my games to actually function in non-gimmicky mode.

You weren't kidding about that vitriol thing, eh? I love it. And I'm with you on turning off 3D. Games before gimmicks.

Probably just a debug unit thing. It's from a magazine's office, they should be able to use it to take direct screenshots and videos.

Aren't the debug units with capture capability at around $3,000 direct from Nintendo, though (according to the leak the other week)?

Is it not more likely to be one of the "Panda" units referred to, which seem to be dev versions of the retail unit?

Personally, I'm planning to have my visual cortex surgically altered so that I can only see in grayscale. So tired of developers emphasizing color over gameplay.

What games aside from Dead of Alive have shown a gameplay benefit from turning off 3D?

There may be some games where the 3D effect doesn't work so well, so even if there's no performance benefit to turning it off it may still make the game more enjoyable to play.
Sounds like RR really benefits from it though, so I'll leave it on.

If playing in color meant I had to always hold my gaming handhelds the perfect distance and height from my eyes, I'd join you.

there is lee way. unless you play your 3DS while jogging i'm sure you'll be fine.

but see, i know what you mean, but distance and height don't really matter much. it's only really angling the system too much left and right that breaks the illusion. you might need to adjust the depth slider if you're closer or further away, but that's it. distance and height don't come into it really.

Urgh... 5:35 when the car hits the wall .... >_<

Yeah :((
And the framerate looked pretty iffy, but I'm not sure if that's just the video.

It might just have capture and nothing else actually, I'm not sure if any of those are the same type they supply to journalists. The guy said it was debug though, so I'm just quoting him :)

in the first video with Street Fighter he has the 3D turned all the way up how come its not blurry?

Because you don't need 3D glasses...
and they've got the camera pointing in the right spot most of the time. :)

That's hardcore. I'm glad someone has the balls to stand up against the binocular vision gimmick. Newsflash, evolution, we're not being hunted across the savanna by big cats anymore. Stick a second analog stick on there or something.

I highly doubt DOA even gets any gameplay benefit with 3D off. In order to keep things fair between 2D and 3D players they would need to do all internal calculations at 60fps.

The only game I can think of that legitimately benefits in gameplay from turning 3D off is Monkey Ball.

Fair enough :)

As I understand it, there's a debug/dev unit, a debug/dev unit with capture capability and then three versions of the "Panda" 3DS, one for each region (US, EU and AUS, though a JP version is probably out there too). I'd imagine that the debug/dev unit with capture is more likely to be a great big boxy thing, more like the old DS dev kits I've seen, hence my guess that this is a "Panda".

The biggest issue I have is that the main gimmick gets in the way of minor gimmicks that I want to see used a lot (gyro and accelerometer). I imagine maintaing a good view of the 3D images is hard when you're twisting and turning the device.

I hope there's never a gaming lull so bad that I'd even consider buying a Ridge Racer game. Even out of a bargain bin. Fool me 200 times, shame on you, fool me blah blah blah

I'm totally getting Ridge Racer once it gets to the bargain bin.
Ya, I kept flip flopping on preordering it with the 3DS, but finally decided on SF4, Steel Diver and Pilot Wings instead... Ridge Racer 2 on PSP was SOOOO GOOOOD.... this one doesn't look like it can live up to that level of RR awesomeness... it's gotta be better than RR64, anyway...

I still have a few doubts...

1. - Is there going to be DLC? I'm not talking about 3DSWare games or Virtual Console games, but add-ons for full games.

2. - Any info about patching games?

3. - I know the new Fried Codes system is better (just one code)... I really don't mind, but... do the system allows for friend requests? I think that's the most important thing. I mean... I really don't mind the codes. What I don't like about the DS and Wii is that you don't get any kind of notification if anyone adds you.

DLC has been confirmed, and I'd assume if a game supports DLC then it can also support patches.

I don't know if there has been any too much more info on the friend system since the January event. We will have to wait for impressions of the friend system.

Man, I'm tired from read many and many people saying that the 3D from 3DS don't pop-out from screen.

They believe that it's like that 3D from that DSi game.

fried codes sound delicious.

no, what they mean is the that 3D doesn't appear to be infront of the screen, just depth, like looking through a window.

they are incorrect though. while many games won't have pop out effects, some do (i hear monkey ball has loads).

The Capcom introduction logo reminds me of the one from the PS era.

Lol that's exactly what I thought when I saw it in person. So cheesy and retro! (yet funnily enough also modern with the 3D pop out and all)

Yes, that it. That Metal Gear Video only make sense if the 3D pop-out from screen.

And I read many hands on and developers telling about the 3D come out the screen.

It doesn't get in the way if they decide to make the game with no 3D support, which they're able to do.

so only 2 games came out in Hong Kong or are those guys just dirt poor?
they run a gaming site they should have gotten everything
no, all the launch games are available
maybe because their budget is limited
and also they are not IGN or GS, unboxing and reviewing more games will not attract more people to buy the magazine or visit their site more often
