If your eyes become used to it, is there any chance of them fucking up in the long term?

I don't want "DS eye".
Valid question, hope so, I'd be rich! (re suing Nintendo)

Hey JGaffers
Just got a phone call now.
So apparently a friend of mine picked up a 3DS/SuperSFIV for me
@Shibuya Tsutaya by the starbucks.
Blue is sold out but they still have some cosmo black left.
Happy hunting.

Just so people are aware, I deliberately played the 3DS for three consecutive days at the demo event in Australia
this weekend, and my eyes have decreased in tiredness in the evenings of each day.

I also think the biggest issue is fooling around with (or not being used to correctly keeping) the sweet spot. That kind of jarring, constant refocusing is a bit painful... but I think over time people will become sufficiently accustomed to managing 3D visuals.
interesting. any other thoughts on the quality/challenges the 3D will put forth?

the 3D implemented on new HDTVs eventually makes me sick. hoping this will work better for me.

Any reason they couldn't use the facing camera to automatically measure the distance between a players eyes and the inches from the screen and adjust the 3d effect accordingly?

Very good idea. I wonder how that would effect battery life..

Yeah, kinda like how the wii pointer/sensor bar works but in reverse.

This reminds me of a cool perception experiment I learned about in psych 101. To prove that alot of perception is due to "change in state" and not static observations, they glued tiny mirrors to the white part of people's eyes and reflected an image off that mirror and onto a screen. At first the subject could see the image but then it quickly faded away as the image was perfectly stabilized and never moved off the exact same cones and rods in their eyes. Something like that.

Kind of the same concept behind why if you sit still in a hot bath, you start to feel room temperature.

Maybe because they can't assume the camera will always be available? Can't some games utilize it?

To the best of my knowledge, the parallax barrier's left/right split is at a fixed angle. The only way to adjust the 3D effect would be by increasing or decreasing the depth, which can only be done on a software level.

Likely buggy, and I would think an image constantly trying to correct its self would give people head aches far faster then letting their eyes just try to adjust to a constant 3D.

Jgaffers, do we post friends codes in this thread?
I've got Ridge Racer and Street Fighter that I'd like to play online.

I've got a spare Black 3DS going for sale if anybody wants it. PM is interested.

Are people really still using the "3D limits use of full controller funtionality" when there's a Japanese launch game which has eschewed 3D so it can have full tilt controls?
There's reasonable reasons to be cold on 3D, but that's a silly one.

I'm having a lot more fun with the AR applications than what I expected. I especially like the 3D drawing one, I think some people will make amazing things with it.

There's 3D drawing? Holy shit, I had no idea about that. Very cool.

Can you save your images to SD card and share?

Actually, you draw in 2D using the stylus on the bottom screen, but then you can visualize your drawing in 3D and turn around it to take pictures from different angles. And yes, you can save pictures to the SD card and use your computer to share them. I just wish you could share pictures from the 3DS itself... Maybe when the internet browser launches in may.

So, are those actually polygonal models or sprites?

They are actual polygons in 3D, but you can only draw in 2D (in the XY plane) and the 3DS automatically adds the depth (in the Z direction) to make them 3D.

has anyone gone and replaced the 2GB card with a larger one?

what is the max supported?
I remember reading in the manual you can use cards up to 32GB.

Oh wow, somehow I got gotten through all of this without realizing that the lower screen is actually higher resolution than the DS' lower screen.

I have no idea how I missed that.

hmmm, that is a little disappointing as I was hoping the AR tech was already capable enough to draw complex 3D objects. Maybe in future revisions/aps they can allow users to make 3D models.

What would be really neat is if in addition to the card they provided a minature "light probe" to allow the system gauge accurate lighting conditions from the scene a light the 3D objects accordingly. Kinda like AR HDR lighting (i think). As of now, the shadows obviously don't match up with the real world objects.

I just tried the music visualizer and it's awesome. You can actually shoot at the blocks in the star fox-like visualizer!!

Edit: Sorry for the double post :(

I don't the problem is from the AR tech not being capable of drawing complex 3D obects. Other AR games have you fight against a dragon and you can turn around and see it from every angle. You can also do it with the drawings. It's just that you can only draw in a 2D plan, and I guess it's because it's easier to do with the stylus.

Yeah, I think the limitation is more likely it being sorta hard/unintuitive to actually draw 3D pictures.

You're right though, there will probably be future apps that allow for this.

ok, but I'm now wondering about the polygon/texture limitation of AR mode. A good test might be to make a map of nothing but a 1px checkerboard pattern and see if the AR mode can render that without slowing down the frame rate.

Scan the QR code with your 3DS to download the Mii.
Btw, I don't know why Apple has not implemented this same thing for those Starbucks free itunes cards.

I'm not as deluded as I make myself out to be
regarding DS games staying at the same ratio instead of getting stretched, I imagine its because the game needs a specific 'co-ordinates' for where you are touching buttons and so on and those locations can't really be stretched. Or can they actually be stretched by toggling an option?

those cross eyed pictures from the 3DS look awesome. the 3D effect really is quite astonishing and finally brings AR to life.

Few things that get a slight thumbs down from me:
1) I hate glossy screens and worry about using this outside/in daylight
2) the new stylus looks kinda sucky, its small until you extend it, its located in a more annoying position, the DS Lite location was perfect for sliding it in and out during games. Guarantee this will change for next revision.
3) The resolution of the cameras seems too poor to sustain any advanced/prolonged appeal of all the cool shit they're capable of. Real shame.

Man, the 3D camera/drawing is turning out to be way cooler than I expected it to be. Every shot that's been posted looks amazing with cross-eye.

Would love to see how it works outdoors.

Man this feature better not be Japan only !

Someone save this and try on a US 3DS

It's worldwide. When I went to a playtest in Madrid some weeks ago, they allowed me to save the Mii I created with a special code so they could mail the QR code back to me when the console was released.

While it is shitty that Nintendo continues to go with really cheap cameras for their handhelds (to save money obviously), in this case it sorta almost makes sense:

You take a 3D picture on a 3DS... the only place you can view the 3D picture is... on your 3DS.

The cameras are actually VGA, while the 3DS' screens (WQVGA) aren't even capable of outputting that resolution.

I think Nintendo sorta accepts that no one is going to be using this as their primary camera, the 3D novelty is the biggest draw, and again, the only way you can appreciate the 3D effect is on the 3DS itself.

It's not actually trolling if you don't admit it
Awesome, it worked. And yes, I took this pic in the dark with nothing but the light of the monitor reading this thread.
