Wait Amir0x pre-ordered Ridge Racer? After everything we've already been through?

Amir0x - can we make OT's for games now or do we have to wait for the western release? Just wondering.

I really hope Nintendogs, Steel Diver, and Pilotwings aren't the only games Nintendo are releasing between now and June...that would kind of blow I think.

I don't see why not. In fact, to make things less sloppy, if you do want to make one just making it a universal thread for whatever game you're making the OT for (So Pilotwings (US/JPN/EURO thread) so that it can cover the US releases of these titles as well and we won't have a billion copy threads in a month.

I can't help myself! My Ridge love is a sickness. I AM SICK!

Plus, I'm between a rock and a hard place. It's less than a month from launch and i have zero games to be enthusiastic about. I had to make a choice lol

He'd already added me, so my registering him completed the bilateral link, allowing our data to be shared. His data showed up automatically after I added him. He didn't see my data until I completed the registration in return.

Thanks for the clarification, I wish it was request based though. =(

Good I was hoping it would be that way. I could use my other thread to link to the OT's of each game so that way people won't lose it and just make a bunch of topics.

Although at the moment I don't feel like making any OT's.

I've never played a Ridge Racer game, but it looks better than Asphalt, but I am really bummed that Scamco didn't put online play in it. >_>;

well what would you recommend I get >_<

I was almost satisfied with Steel Diver until I got jarosh's really terrible impressions of it. And I tend to really trust his impressions, one of those GAFers I keep in my back pocket...

I have a 3DS pre-ordered with PS3 style no games, except for the Rabbids, which is coming free with the system.

Wait, maybe that's worse.

You don't have to buy it day one. Maybe you'll be able to play a demo at the store or something first? You could always buy it a few days later after you've gotten the chance to play it.

Although I think Steel Diver is one of the more interesting efforts just because of the periscope mode that uses the gyro sensor. :)

Are the items in Street Pass Quest unlockables for your Miis? Like, can you put that Mario hat from the video someone posted on your Miis?

I really don't care about the 3D. I think it will be a nice little gimmick to play around with if I like it. What I do love is that the built in software and launch games look pretty fun from the videos in this thread and other places. That wait is so long.

I mean if the 3D worked without all the drawbacks there'd be those arguments, but it's just not the case though. There's too many fundamental problems that aren't worth the headache. Although the 'strength' here you mention is completely unnecessary for me - I gauge distance instinctively already and can blaze through the absolute hardest of the hardest platforms with relative ease, even without utilizing shadow casting.

In the "imaging 3DS game concept" thread I thought of a specific type of gameplay that might really benefit from the 3D and would be entirely new altogether while leveraging the unique strengths of handheld gaming. But, outside of that I don't see where it'll ever help much in a meaningful way. Flight games is all I can think of.

Curious, have you ever played Wario Land on the Virtual Boy? I know it's been awhile, but from what I remember of it, the depth worked really well with the gameplay in that platformer.

There's certainly no reason that the backgrounds couldn't have SOME animation, but I guess that's launch rush for you.
Oh well, at least the game is feature rich.

Any chance they may have the animation in the U.S. and international releases? Or would Capcom just wait until the next iteration of SFIV on the 3DS to bother with them? (Or wait for MVC3 3DS?)

I mean, one I doubt I'll be able to waltz into a store a few days later and buy it. Two, i already know it's a wasteland lineup... it wouldn't change whether I got my hands on it or not.

But three, and this is the important thing, I see no reason to wait because the price is not going to drop again before Paper Mario 3DS comes out. And by that time, the system might be going under extreme shortages and then I'll have to wait to get it which is not acceptable. I need Paper Mario 3DS day -100.

Yup, it's one of the only games besides the Tennis one I have for the platform. I don't remember it impacting anything at all the 3D. I do remember my eyes gushing rivers of blood though after playing for twelve minutes.

Sorry guys if this been asked several times but what are the battery performance test results from the gaffers who bought it ?

donkey got 5 hours and, er, 15 minutes? with low settings of 3DS but wifi play for 45 minutes and an undefined "some 3D slider gameplay."

that's the best 'test' I've seen so far from a GAFer.

Best anyone has got using full 3D is 5+ hours. It's reported about a page or two back.

I'm sorry, I forgot, gimmickry for the sake of gimmickry and novelty for the sake of something different with no regard for the impact to the gameplay/technicals or the functionality of the gameplay is somehow commendable in the post-Wii era.

Gimmickry and novelty have always BEEN commendable Amir0x.

I for one can't wait for the next Nintendo handheld. I hope they let me use my pinkies to control something.

Spoken like a true Stephen Colbert: just satirical enough to be hilarious :D

I'm just another reuglar Japan gaffer and I got to try out the 3DS at Gotemba Premium Outlet mall today. Honestly I haven't really followed the 3DS much so this may just be preaching to the choir here but whatever...

My overall impression of the hardware is alright. It's like a DS lite put on a little weight. The screens are bright and crispy and I liked the fact that you can switch between 3D and 2D modes on the fly.

The 3D effect was better than I expected and I really liked the feel of the analog stick. I wish I had a chance to play something besides Nintendogs 3DS but at least I got to check it out around launch.

I may want to pick one of these up after things calm down a bit. I'm convinced on this whole glasses-free 3D. This is the way TV 3D should go.

Just my two cents.

It's going that way... slowly.

Also...

Toshiba said that its "view point overlay technology" will allow viewers to move their heads whilst watching 3D content without compromising the 3D effect.

Maybe next handheld iteration we'll get something like 'view point overlay technology', that'd cross out one big problem

It's okay I plan to go buy a hamster so I can do a controlled experiment in a well lit room with by having it play with my nintendogs puppies.

All for the name of science.

You might be right. It's been ages since I played it and I'm too lazy to go try and dig it out right now to see what it was like. I just remember it being one of the few games where I thought the 3D sorta worked but like I said, it's been awhile.

On a different note, why are people preordering games at this point? I really think there's going to be a sale on games from some of the retailers when it launches so I don't see why anyone would preorder at this point, especially if it's at Amazon.

which will be good. i can't seem them ever fixing the focusing issue until they get actual holograms working, or unless they can get some kind of retina sensing camera working.

then of course you're back with a display that only works for one person though. i think there's always going to be a degree of extra work involved in watching or playing something in 3D, and while i do think that we'll possibly just get used to it (like we have with watching 2D tv, we don't try and force our eyes to focus an out of focus background) i don't know that it'll ever be perfect on a 'display'.

i'm thinking we need holograms, or beamed straight into our eye shit before it'll be as natural as looking at the real world.

Bleh, those lifeless backgrounds in SSF4 made me go back and cancel that particular preorder. I'm sure it's a solid game all around but since I already own it (twice) on the PS3, I'll take a wait-and-see approach to verify whether the "magic" is still there even with the backgrounds frozen in time.

Pilotwings Resort and Steel Diver remain, and I'm pretty pumped about both. I watched the PWR trailer again, this time with headphones, and those sound effects. <3 The hum of rocket boosters, the chime of hitting a target, the rush of air when you glide into a thermal... Good stuff.

Maybe I'll preorder Nintendogs as a third game. I'm just concerned it'll be mic-intensive; it always felt awkward yelling at my handheld to get my pup to execute the right moves. It would be nice if there were touchscreen button shortcuts as an alternative to voice commands...

That, and I already have a real-life dog, two cats, three goldfish and a tadpole in a large tank, etc. My empathy makes me feel guilty about the old Nintendogs being neglected, but I figure as long as I don't boot up the game, they're still in the mint condition I last left them since the game's clock won't have been updated. XD

Yeah, the stairs and the flying one are awesome. Can only imagine if watching while trippin out, lol.

And I just found out you can control the flying one and the game and watch looking visualizer with the slide pad. :OOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I actually remember trippin on mushrooms a few years back and Electroplankton was glorious! I've generally quit drugs except rare exceptions, but I think 3DS would be amazing high.

I mean I definitely did that for the Gamecube launch (waltzed into Ames and got one right off the shelf. of course, nobody ever shopped at Ames. Which is why the store closed one year later).

But as a general rule, high profile launches are always stocked out for a little bit after the launch window. And in really bad situations, ala PS2 and Wii, it can be months.

And with how successful Nintendo handhelds are and the bungling of Wii's supply for like six or seven months post launch and for that Christmas season, I don't want to take a risk

Neat, you couldn't control the flying one on the DSi Sound.

It seems like there are less visualizers, but there are mostly good ones. At lot of the DSi ones are garbage.

I'll miss the Mario one though. :(

Yeah I think "waltzing" days are over. We all know the Wii situation... but also I remember the DS was even sold out at times during 2005, and that was more of a slow buildup than I expect 3DS to be.

That can't be right. If it were, there would be no reason why the depth slider would have to revert to a binary on-off switch when playing 3D FMVs or displaying other prerendered content, yet we know that it does.

What the depth slider actually does, as far as I can tell, is adjust the distance between the two in-game cameras, which increases or decreases the perceived depth accordingly. Decreasing the depth may well make it easier to maintain a focus on the screen, but as I understand it, there's no way to adjust the focus of the parallax barrier itself while 3D is on.

Yes, this.

Also noticed that there's no volume control on the app itself, since the volume control switch isn't digital. And mixing recording samples with the music didn't make a comeback from the DSi :p
