Nintendo 3DS Japanese Launch Thread

i've decided the feature i want most right now is a 3D photo sharing service, sortof like instagram or flipnote studio - i really like taking pictures with this camera, and it'd be great to have a way to show people and see what they've taken. make it happen, nintendo!

Those visualizers were part of the same music app in the DSi, nothing new that I could see there... maybe a few more new ones but I recognise that Excitebike one

So I saw in the sound menu that there is a surround option. Does this mean you can get surround sound with the appropriate headphones? Would plugging my 3DS into my 5.1 receiver give the same effect?

I suppose it would only work in games with the proper 5.1 sound mix?

The flying one and the excite bike one look like the only returning equalizers assuming he cycled through all of them. It also looks like you can change instruments on each button instead of as a set.

BTW anyone know what the Street Pass functions on 3DS music are?

I have a feeling the space ship tube flyer visualizer in 3DS sound is as close as I'll get to a 3DS port of Red Alarm.

Hopefully the app supports more than 100 songs per folder now. I'm guessing it still doesn't support actual playlists?

to who want to play DS game at 3DS in 1:1 256x192

put down START&SELECT button and enter DS game mode
Does this really work?

Haha the spaceship visualizer lets you control it and when you press the L + R button to add your sounds/instruments it shoots out lasers at the blocks :D

I tried both at Nintendo World, but black was pretty obviously the color for me. I didn't want the system's color distracting from the graphics.
I...I was so ready to jump off the fence and commit to blue. I WAS GOING TO POST IN THE BLUE VS. BLACK THREAD AND EVERYTHING.

Interestingly enough, your testimony is one of the few that haven't been along the lines of "OMG BLUE" after seeing it in person.
The one reason you stated is the one that has been NIGGLING AT THE BACK OF MY MIND; I don't want a distraction. Oh, but the pretty... *climbs miserably back on the fence*

Damn this indecisive mind of mine...

Old N64 games and the like had "surround" options, and it had nothing to do with Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, 5.1 or any of that. Just an effect that gives the impression of full surround via stereo. How it differs from stereo, I'm not sure, but I bet it would work fine with normal headphones....

Of course I'd like to hear a technical answer about it.

If it is a surround sound option, there is no reason why it can't work with normal stereo headphones.

can 3DS play DS game in 1:1 256x192 mode [not scale] ? yes you can

put down START&SELECT button and enter DS game mode
Is this a reasonable size on the top screen? Are the two screens the same size?

I need confirmation of this, stat!

Why not just make it an option in the menu? Why make something like this so obscure?

I would love for this to be true, and look good.

My current DS is a phat... I've never owned a Lite, DSi or XL, and I want 3DS to be a great classic DS player, not just forcing me into iffy upscales.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Wouldn't enabling 1:1 DS mode make the display image really, really small? There's quite a large difference in resolution between the two systems.

Yes, a lot of touch screen games would become instantly unplayable. That's why it stretches it by default.

However, for button based games like NSMB, Mario Kart DS or the Castlevania games, it would be a very welcome option!

I would expect the DPI to be similar to PSP or GBm, so yeah it'd be fairly small by comparison, but given the option I'd usually prefer small and crisp to big and blurry. With options, everyone wins.

There is something to be said for really tight pixels. Some games will look glorious.

but with the two screens, and touchscreen, it's not quite a perfect solution a la GB Micro.

I wouldn't be surprised if the DS 1:1 thing is true; the GBA let you have the true ratio for Game Boy games if you wanted to, I think you had to press Select.

NOICE!!!

Hah! I like how they cleverly got around the gap problem. I never thought of just pushing the screens together lol.

Why the hell they relegated it to an obscure button combo that they don't even list in the manual I will never know.

Problem solved! :D

The fact that they didn't list it in the manual is weird... but it may not be as playable on many games, due to size, so I can see Nintendo wanting to ensure that only people who know what they are doing can enable it.

They could've easily have just had it as an option in the menu, with a warning saying the some games might be harder to play with a smaller sized screen.

I bet you that it'll be added as an option in the menu down the line as part of one of the system updates, after Nintendo see all of the media outlets complain about how DS games look stretched (and they would never think to look for a button combo)

Unless of course the US/EU manuals lists the button combo in the manual...

I'm watching the justin.tv feed of SSFIV posted above, what is that off-center POV for? Was it introduced for the hell of it, or does it offer a better view for the 3D?

Imo this is too significant a feature to not be included in any official documentation. Screen size is a bit small, but it'll look great.

That shit is thread worthy. I've become very skeptical of the 3DS in the last 24 hours from various negative reports, but surprises like this keep trickling in and restoring my enthusiams for it.

Yeah, it gives a much better 3D effect than the standard side-only view. In the end it's just for fun, to show off 3D, so it's totally optional.

What negative reports are you referring to?

I'm wondering if maybe it was a late addition that they just squeezed in before finalizing the system, and yeah, maybe they'll add a menu option in a future firmware update.

Like the stretching of DS games to fit the 3DS screens (until this option was discovered). The wobbly upper screen is another. And many people getting nausated from the 3D.

Just so people are aware, I deliberately played the 3DS for three consecutive days at the demo event in Australia
this weekend, and my eyes have decreased in tiredness in the evenings of each day.

I also think the biggest issue is fooling around with (or not being used to correctly keeping) the sweet spot. That kind of jarring, constant refocusing is a bit painful... but I think over time people will become sufficiently accustomed to managing 3D visuals.

I haven't heard about he wobbly screen. What do you mean by that? The nausia doesn't surprise me as I'm sure that varies from person to person given the nature of what's going on.

Kotaku said the top screen felt a bit wobbly on their 3DS.

If your eyes become used to it, is there any chance of them fucking up in the long term?

I don't want "DS eye".
