The margin is likely to be razor thin, however. As in they don't make a sustainable business from hardware sales alone, they need accessories, software and subscriptions.

Cloud gaming wil not be viable for at least another 10 years at the earliest. One of the largest technology companies in the world tried to make it work and failed misrebly. You can't make the iPhone before the iPhone.
Or it might not be razor thin, we don't know for sure, all we do know is that it has been making profit for the past 3 years and profit increases as you buy more from suppliers (components get cheaper over time anyway as they get older and new components are made to replace them) and you make revisions that are more profitable (thats why Slim consoles are made). They have never lowered the price of the PS5 so it wouldn't surprise me if they are making decent profit on it. For Pro I wouldn't be surprised if they are making $50-$100 per unit not including the profit they are making from the drive and stand.

It's been four years since launch...
They put out a new Mario & Luigi and a new Zelda game recently. Even if those games don't have the juice of other games, they've managed to somehow keep the content flowing. Putting out a "new" game in January isn't a horrible idea, especially for people who just got a Switch.
If we learned anything from the ABK takeover, it is that the FT is a proxy mouthpiece for MS to push their narratives.
For millions of players, that is not an option.

Sony I think has bigger issues that can be cleaned up internally to resolve this. Capcom releases DD2 and it does 2.5 million and they were amazed by those sales. So clearly it can work, changes just need to be made. I remember the new CEO asked Insomniac why the cost to make SM2 increased so much and the devs couldn't provide an answer to that. They should know why the cost to make the game increased so drastically.
As Sony themselves have said, as well as what we know of Xbox and Nintendo, particularly since COVID, the time that passes from a console launch through the end of the console cycle no longer allows much for significantly reducing price, as it did in previous console cycles. The economics have changed, Sony is no more immune to that than Nintendo, Xbox, Valve, etc.
