Nintendo announced Nintendo Music

At this point NSO would be considered the best value in the ocean of subscription services, if it was from anyone but Nintendo. They keep adding stuff for no extra charge, and you can split the subscription between several users and spend peanuts a year.
But it’s Nintendo, so if it isn’t downright extortion and highway robbery, it’s too little for too much. And people keep wondering why Nintendo keeps trolling the gaming world with wild abandon.

Quick impressions are it’s a polished iPhone app but no support for iPad screens which is especially wasteful in landscape. Some of the terminology was initially confusing e.g. ‘classics’ doesn’t mean older games. Long-term downloads and temporary cache can be deleted separately, downloads managed for offline listening.

Being a subscription addition means the price of subscription will probably rise if it’s popular.

I like the idea. I have a ton of video game music that I was using Plex for to listen from my phone but Plex is ridiculously unreliable.

My issue with it is they are doing that same drip feed model they do for their classic games. You don't even get the entire sound track to the games they do have on there. Metroid Prime is missing phendrana depths. Star Fox 64 is missing the multiplayer music.

On the plus side, N64 and SNES music is uncompressed.

It's really silly to dripfeed the soundtracks like this. It'd be like debuting The Beatles on Spotify, releasing only Help! and then giving you Rubber Soul after 8 months.

I'm also gonna be mad if Nintendo uses this to justify going after YT uploads more aggressively.

Makes a change from asking Alexa to play the Metroid Prime theme only to get the Dutch Pipe Band version of the theme.
Just have the Inside the Deku Tree music playing while typing this and liking how it goes back and forth between the ears.

Sorry to say, but that feels like a given. I’d imagine they’re going to get waaay more aggressive at taking down stuff from other places if they themselves are offering a paid solution.

Adding value to the service instead of jacking up the price 35% to please shareholders. I approve 👍

Granted they're probably gonna increase the price at some point, but at least Nintendo do it the smart way adding more actual value first BEFORE any potential price increase.

Unlike two other platform holders I could name 🙄.....

Why not both? YouTube is an ocean of free music and the artists (or at least the publishing companies) earn money on ads.

Well the obvious thing is that they want you to subscribe to their service where they get all the money. Since YouTube offer their own subscription service these days they are a competitor.

Well, that, and the fact that they’re already taking down Nintendo related stuff today. I just think they’ll become more aggressive now since they have more reasons to.

Sony itself had it's own music streaming service, but only in Japan. They had the Bloodborne, Gravity Daze and some other PS game music on there too. I think it's shut down now.
PlayStation GameMusic? I don't think it was a sub-based streaming service, but I could be wrong.
Still, should be from a time when Japanese record labels weren't releasing music on ANY global digital platform, at all.

No, it was from Sony itself. They had Warner, Universal and some other labels and Sony threw on some of it's videogame music that they owned. It was called Mora Qualitas and it was sub-based iirc. Never tried it myself, stumbled acorss the name either last year or the year before when I was researching something.

" Japanese record labels weren't releasing music on ANY global digital platform". Don't know when that would be, MQ was relatively recent, announced 2018, launched 2019. I'm not sure when it died though. Wait, I checked, 2022, it lasted 3 years. https://www.hiresaudio.online/mora-qualitas-streaming-service-to-close/

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but i need some help from you Switch owners. My godchild has Mario Cart 8 Deluxe on disc and wants something called Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass for Christmas. As far as i know she doesn't have an account or online subscription. What would be the best way to gift it to her? A key or a 25 Euro gift card or is there even a physical version with this addon on disc?

I don't know about physical version with the DLC. but you can buy the DLC (all-in) or subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. This tier include the Mario Kart 8 DLC for free.

Yup, you need to subcribe to access it. It looks like there's a full game + DLC but only digital version
Thanks guys, but since she never plays online and it's gone after the sub ends and the digital package is quite expensive i think i'm going with a key. Just found this nice box for 25 Euro. So i at least got something physical to wrap and gift.

This is a pretty cool perk of having a Nintendo account honestly.

But no casting? No way at all to listen to this stuff on my home speakers, it's fully constrained to my phone? That sucks pretty bad. Literally every other media app I use on Android supports casting, it's just expected to be there.

Interesting how Nintendo get so legal when people infringe upon their IP, but this app almost looks like an APK hack of the Youtube Music App. It's so similar that I wonder if they have actually done a deal with Google/Youtube to build/power this service.

Must be an Android issue (?). I’ve been blasting Mario Galaxy through our speakers since it launched.

Huh? The issue is that the app doesn't support casting.

It does support Airplay it seems. And I guess Bluetooth, but I don't want to stream music over BT to my home speaker setup.
