Nintendo Direct during E3: How will it go?

(Sorry if some people skipped a heart beat by reading the first two words of the thread title and thinking this was about a ND being announced.)

So we know Nintendo won't have the traditional Pre-E3 press conference this year and instead will have smaller press events for journalist and retailers while having Nintendo Directs for the fans and the people at home during the week of E3.

But how do you think it will go?

Will they have one long ND? Two smaller ones? (One for Wii U, one for 3DS)

Will it just be one ND of the usual 30 minutes lenght? Will it deliver? Will it not? (It beter deliver.)

In other words, we're just over one month away, so what's your predicytons?

In before "Please understand" jokes

One will be at 12:30 pm est on June 10 and one will be later that night at 9 pm

oh Nintendo, dat sneak attack, do it Iwata

i think it will be separate , one for 3DS and one for Wii u and maybe 1 for only eshop and vc.

I'm pretty excited about the format change so long as the content actually delivers. Preferably an hour or close to an hour. Doing two separate ones seems dumb but I guess it wouldn't affect me much either way. No technical snafus, slightly less embarrassing speeches, more Iwata...just bring the games I want and I'm set

Hopefully theres one that works at an in-deep looks at all their announced stuff, maybe showing and extended playthrough of TW101, new media on stuff like X, Pikmin and Bayonetta 2.

Then they can blow their load on the other showing Mario 3D, Retro's Mario kart and Breath of Fire revival Wiiu.

Probably separate Directs for Wii U and 3DS.

3DS Direct will feature lots of Pokemon XY gameplay, 5 minutes. Zelda for 5 minutes. Mario and Luigi for 5 minutes. New announcements. Maybe Wii Fit 3DS, and confusion erupts.

Wii U will also have a Pokemon game. Zelda WW for 5 minutes. Wii Fit U 10 minutes. The 2 Mario games for 10 minutes total. And new announcements.

Ehh, I think they said they'd have one when the conference normally would have been

Nah, Rich from IGN said that the "media event" taking place at that time is just Nintendo opening up their booth a few hours early. There probably won't be enough time for the press to write previews before the show floor opens up to attendees, so I assume that their lineup will have to be unveiled sometime before the 11th.

Does that mean Smash 4 could be revealed literally any day now?

Possible, but I expect it between June 10-12.

And if the Direct is 36 minutes like every other Direct, that will be one amazing 36 minutes.

I bet that's the bomb they drop in an attempt to steal away attention from the other systems.

Nintendo: "We are announcing a new Nintendo Direct on May 21, showing off an amazing unshown game for Wii U!"

I bet that's the bomb they drop in an attempt to steal away attention from the other systems.

They better do some pretty heavy Innovations to the fourth game in the series. They can't really go any higher from announcing sonic the hedgehog so it better be something really special

I bet there'll be one for WiiU games (first and third party) one for 3DS games, and one about 3DS/WiiU connectivity (Smash Bros, maybe Mario Kart, etc.)

Id actually prefer 2 - hour long presentations. 1 for 3DS and the other on Wii U. Would be nice if back to back.

Im expecting big reveals.

This is Nintendos chance to turn around all the negativity surrounding the wii u.

They still have a chance to recoup.

I feel like last years e3 was a dud because they want to compress all they got to get attention from going up against ms/sonys reveal.

They need to prove that they can top themselves, software wise. That they arent burnt out of brilliance.

i think Nintendo got too arrogant last E3, thinking they would win because they have a successor to the Wii.

I really don't know if they'll achieve the same exposure or reaction they would get with a traditional conference. I don't think we really understand how they'll be presenting things this year. It seems unclear to me.

But I seriously hope they blow our minds away. They really need to bring it this year. Wii U desperately needs some new customers, and considering the release schedule, it'll get continue getting worse before it gets better.

They'll probably announce that, since it's overall the most popular thing among Nintendo fans, the production of Nintendo Directs will step-by-step supersede the production of games.

Yeah. I wouldnt deny that.

Or they appeared arrogant, because they knew they only had so little to show.

I just started keeping up with nintendo since getting the wii u, so my awareness of them only goes so far.

Im both excited and nervous to see the next 3d mario/MK(ssb will be fine). These two games, to me, will show whether Nintendo devs still got it. Same goes for the next zelda.

Ninty has fucking lost it with this E3 stuff. That's the kind of shit you do when you're on top, not at the bottom.

I wish I had your blind optimism.

If they started charging Nintendo Points to view them, you can BET they would make more money than they do on games right now.

I think it will probably just be one slightly long Direct, either Monday morning or Sunday night depending on how busy Monday is. (The show starts on Tuesday right? Things need to be announced before demos start getting played.)

I expect it to feature a hype Smash 4 trailer, 3D Mario reveal, a Mario Kart 8 showcase, more Pikmin 3 stuff, a W101 date, some new 3DS game, new LttP2, Pokemon and M&L4 info/footage, maybe another quick mention of X. Maybe a new 3DS(XL) limited edition for Pokemon or Zelda, and a modest Wii U price cut.

Ok, that sounds like I'm setting myself up for total disappointment, but I think any one of those things is pretty feasible.

will be a hour or so, they'll talk a lot about upcoming wii u releases meaning games we've already known or seen aka Pikmin 3, W101 ( will probably get release date announced) also wii fit U

then show a trailers of wind waker hd ( also might get release date ), bayo2, Fire Emblem X SMT ( maybe )

then the big hitters ~ Mario 3D U will be shown with trailer, Mario Kart HD U shown with a holiday release, and Finally end it with Smash bros 4 trailer ( with the big surprise that Pac-man will be a guest character -_-)

in the middle we might get 3rd party sizzle reel aka Ubisoft and Warner Bros. games

things I'm not expecting - more of X, Retro's new game ( if it isn't Mario kart HD ) and other 3rd party reveals like GTA V, Final fantasy, metal gear, EA games

edit: 3DS will get another separate "mini" direct if Vita price cut is announced with more footage of LTTP2

Might be better than their last couple of E3s, especially since mostly only gamers watch the directs, and that is the audience it will be catering to.

I'm expecting an E3 "hub" like the previous two years, with separate videos on specific topics/games. One for Mario Kart, one for Mario, one for Smash and so on. Trailers, of course, but also a bit of developer commentary/interview stuff. Again, like the previous two E3s.

Not sure if they'll actually schedule an E3 "event" though.

I wish I had your blind optimism.

If they started charging Nintendo Points to view them, you can BET they would make more money than they do on games right now.

I had a really good feeling of the direct that dropped X. I have a better feeling for these next ND's.

Doesnt mean anything to you, but Im obviously expecting big things.

I really can't second guess Nintendo so I'll just say what I'd like to see.

I think they should do 5 - 6 Nintendo directs spread out over the 2 weeks prior to E3, with the last one being about 3 days before E3 starts to give it press/hype time before it's overshadowed.

I want each ND to concentrate on 1 title starting with their "lesser" ones and leading up to the most exciting/biggest megaton that they might have. If they can't stretch a title out to 10 minutes (I'm on with 10 minute directs) then maybe put a smaller game first.

I think if they take this approach, even if we know all the titles, it will still be interesting to see but maybe not overwhelmingly so. The only thing possible of exciting me that we haven't been told about is Retro's game, and given their hiring over the last couple of years it could very well be an epic, "mature" game. Hopefully Nintendo's struggles in development haven't meant they've pulled Retro in to help with something like Mario Kart and therefore put their own game on the back-burner.

In the end though, I'm so cynical that it would not surprise me if Nintendo thinks that Mario Kart in HD is the "big thing" and so their lead up to E3 ends up feeling rather flaccid. If they do the "same old" then I don't think I'll be received too positively (By gaming press and core gamers) given the expectation following the Wii U state of affairs.

Whilst Nintendo's regular games are great I don't get as excited as I used to over their announcements because I'm waiting for something big, exciting and different.

BTW: I don't include 3DS in there, they can do what they want with that, I don't care. The Wii U is the thing that needs resuscitation.

That would all be pretty nice huh. Wii Sports Ultra and Mario Kart ain't gonna do much against the competition though. Retro's game has to be big and beautiful and online and ready for holidays to stand a chance.

Personally, announcements of WiiU versions of COD:ghost and GTAV port would be heavenly for me.

Nintendo will blow its load before E3. During E3 they'll have 2012s presentation on repeat.

One thing's for sure, it can't be worse than their attempt last E3. Spending all that time on stage focusing on an old Batman port, EA support and Nintendo Land while ignoring Platinum's The Wonderful 101? Crazy!

I just hope they have something that will blow us away. How about one 15 minute Direct every day for a week throughout E3?

Here's what I would do for the E3 ND:

- Schedule one 90 min long ND the week before E3, to cover both 3DS and Wii U. Cover each game quickly (as in a quick trailer/reel) and go over release dates. Also cover new features and functionalities.
- Schedule short 10 - 15 min long mini-Directs for significant games announced in the ND throughout the rest of the week. Each mini-Direct will contain gameplay footage covering how the game will play and what players should expect. Optionally include developer interviews. Advertise these mini-Directs at the beginning and end of the first main Direct.
- Aggregate all these videos into a hub, and release the videos one at a time. Hold the presumably most significant titles until the end to retain viewership.
- Schedule an event on the day of the main ND for press to get hands-on with the titles. Schedule a separate event on the same day for retailers.
- Include all videos on e-shop. Demos for titles that are releasing within the next month or two (Pikmin, Wonderful 101).

In this fashion, Nintendo would be able to control the conversation regarding the titles they release and set the right expectations for those games. They'll also be able to give each title significant exposure while retaining excitement throughout the week for them.

I expect the vitality sensor to make its return
The only thing it'll do though is punch a tiny hole into your finger and analyze the acquired blood sample, the results of which are sent to Kyoto HQ. Iwata needs your vitality, if you have it.

I predict that there will be 2: one for the 3DS and one for the Wii U, and one will happen during the "press event". The 3DS ND will be the more exciting of the two because it has the possibility of unexpected announcements. The Wii U ND will disappoint many people and consist solely of trailers and gameplay info for already announced and speculated (3D Mario, Smash Bros, ect.) titles. There will be no truly new Wii U news.
