B-

I would have loved to see more 1st party games and I would've loved to see Switch 2 versions of at least Xenoblade X. Price announcement was also missing.

The 3rd party dump felt a bit too much as well. Still a great showing.

DK is nice but that isn't a system seller. And for me personally it's not a game I must have. Not that Nintendo will have issues selling Switch 2.

still, the launch line up here is arguably better than that of the Switch 1.

the Switch 1 had no real exclusive at launch. it had Zelda, but that is cross gen and was nearly the same on Wii U.
Metroid Prime 4 is comparable here (but the upgrade of that game is HUGE compared to the small res upgrade Zelda had on Switch compared to Wii U)

the only decent Switch exclusive game at launch was freaking Fast RMX, an updated version of Fast Racing Neo on Wii U.

this is what I'm saying... I feel like people were extremely unreasonable about their expectations.
Mario Kart 9 and 3D Donke Kong within the first 2 months of the system, with a new cross gen Metroid Prime game within the first 6 months is a far better launch line up than 1 cross gen Zelda and a few indy titles that the Switch 1 had.

it took 5 months until the Switch got its first big exclusive with Splatoon 2. and on top of that there was a severe lack of multiplatform releases outside of indie games.

the Switch 2 getting big AAA current gen games is already a better start

I think explaining the features of the Switch 2 was it's slowest point, but then they got down to what I wanted to see: a FLOOD of 1st and 3rd party software that's going to be there on Day 1! Nintendo brought the HEAT!

Metroid Prime 4 is in a similar situation.

If Switch is your main platform, then I agree, this was a pretty good show. If it's your secondary platform, personally it was a dud. I don't understand why new Mario wasn't in the launch window. DK isn't nearly as popular.

Fuckin' amazing. The hardware looks incredible, and the amount of immediate 3rd-party support is wild. Plus a new DONKEY KONG. And Prime 4 at 120fps with mouse control?

OP, where is the S Tier option??

120fps support

Brand new games.
"Impossible ports"
Exclusive From soft game

All in a 7 inch handheld.

But that's the "worst" thing in the world. Gotta keep moving those goal posts though.

They don't make widgets.

Z for me. Worst presentation since the Xbox One. A full presentation of a new console focused on recycled content, some of two or three generations ago.

I don't think that's true.

there are plenty of people who like to have a handheld as a side platform, even for multiplatform games.

rhe Steam Deck is exactly that for PC users.

You aren't paying batshit crazy game prices with a Windows handheld or Steam Deck. And these already exist for the purpose.

They don't got all day. ;)

But it means everything but a few stragglers that used features/specs very particular to the Switch
True and what doesn't work probably doesn't matter anyway.

I guess Miyamoto has truly passed the torch to his protege, not around for the first real presentation of the system.

Unless they got some explosive news coming later he will drop in for.

This thing will sell like hot cakes.

So many games and so many features packed in, MK9, Upgraded TTOK, MP9 and Donkey Kong all in the launch window? SIGN ME THE FRICK UP.

The biggest downer for me are the game prices though... Oof.

Concerning the Zelda games, do they have to be rebought on the Switch 2 to get the upgrades or will your old Switch version be upgraded perhaps with a $10 fee for each game?

Would have loved to seen Doom dark ages. A new Mario and Zelda and some new indies but what we got was pretty cool

Very mid. Nintendo can be so cringe at times. Charging for a virtual tech demo. They need a day 1 Mario game.

They really should have clarified if Switch 1 games are able to run better on the system with dev patches or an internal boost with DLSS.

An easy A. Minus no new Mario platformer, but we get a Donkey Kong 3D platformer!!! And a spiritual successor to Bloodborne?! Fuck me! Nintendo remain the kings of gaming.

Bookended by Mario kart World and a new Donkey Kong game, that was the highlights for me personally.
Everything else was a mixed bag.

The deafening silence on the price seems peturbing to say the least.

Paid upgrades for existing, select Switch titles left a bitter taste, but I suppose expecting gestures of goodwill from Nintendo is something akin to derangement.

I'll grab mine with Mario kart World, Day one, no question, but the Direct didn't exactly have me salivating for the prospects after that.

D+

"GameChat" basically seems like Xbox Live Party Chat (which is a 20yr old concept) but somehow also introducing a bunch of extra visual noise to your screen. Why would you want to play a game like that?

Ok I guess I'm not a Nintendo fan

I skipped Wii U entirely and night a switch day 1 because of botw

Switch 2 has nothing on that launch window.

it has Mario Kart 9. the sequel to a game that sold almost 70 million copies. so for many it will be a good launch lineup

people already did that with the Switch 1 tho.

you could see a lot of people saying they went PC + Switch, or PS4 + Switch at the time.
Yes, since the handheld options are somewhat recent (for reasonable prices) and Switch 1 wasn't super expensive. Plus you could get games on sale for not unreasonable amount.

$470/500 device and $80-90 games are a different situation.

F

This is a new console launch and their hardware is poor, their lineup looks quite bad. The only semi exciting game is a Mario Kart title

Paid virtual tours

Paid game chat

Paid upgrade packs that don't look upgraded

What an awful presentation for a new console they had plenty of time to cook for, and they didn't cook.

A mid looking donkey Kong game is their show ender???? Where the hell is 3D Mario?? My expectations were already low and they somehow managed to go lower

Your highlight was the 10$ upgrade path for days gone, simmer down lol

E. Iterative hardware and software without any surprises at all.
"Standard" would be an optimistic way to put it, "boring" would probably be realistic.

Started off kinda slow, but once the games kicked in, we had some cool reveals. Nintendo and From Software literally said "fuck you sony, we'll make bloodborne 2 ourselves"

I also didn't expect to be super excited about a new Donkey Kong game, but that looked great, and it's soon.

For a new console event, I could not rate this higher than a C. New Mario Kart looked cool, new Donkey Kong was fine, an exclusive Fromsoft game in 2026 is awesome, and Deltarune looks great. The rest was underwhelming.

Edit: just saw that the Fromsoft game is multiplayer only. That would cause me to drop my score to a D.

Wow 120fps and 4k support, welcome to 2019 i suppose.

Brand new games.. yeah they look meh

Impossible ports? They all look bad at the lowest settings, and you'll pay the highest price of any port.

I really liked it, some first party games would be great but they showed what I wanted them to show... Now if only Xenoblade 3 could be also upgraded...

A February state of play being compared to
A console reveal

Nice try buddy. The Saros reveal alone was better than any game announcement sans MKW

Too bad the only good thing at the Nintendo switch 2 reveal was $90 game prices and $20 upgrade packs

Enjoy
