Announced for Nintendo Switch (releasing July 22 worldwide), this is a HD remaster of one of Square Enix's forgotten classics, and one import fans have been talking about since the original hit Super Famicom in Japan in September of 1994.

All that info..........just can't take it all in, some awesome reveals and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC free for the online expansion pack subscribers, awesome. ;)

Rather than the Pixel Remaster approach of "perfectly" porting the pixels, this seems to take a bit of the "Dragon Quest 2D HD" approach, with painted backdrops, new effects, lighting/overlays and 3D'ish motion but with pixelart characters and still a general throwback feel.

I'm in favor of these HD-2D looks (though I do often hope that the "original" is included or running underneath or preserved somehow so you can play both ways), as the other ways of remastering tend to get people fidgeting about what's the "perfect way" to do them; these, it's clear they're a new game in look and feel but then they're real close to the originals where possible. It generally avoids the smoothness of Flash and the fidelity questions of pixel upresing, and the multiple fields make it feel like old-school parallax techniques on steroids without crossing too far over into unrecognizable. Maybe some folks don't like the look? I'm curious, I have seen DQ got some good nods while FF Pixel Remaster is still argued about but maybe there's not consensus.

Holy shit. This is a Squaresoft gem from the SNES era, can't believe they are doing a remake. Can't wait!

BTW just need to say that Live A Live did the "multiple protagonists" thing a million times better than Octopath

This was a highligt, alongside Front Mission.

I adored this game on the SNES. This is the one game that I will buy day one.

I don't know anything about this game! I was freaking out ,thought it was FF6. But his looks interesting!

Yeah man, if you're old and a JRPG fan, this is a day long awaited.

It's not a Live a Live sequel (I always imagined that Live a Live could have been the perfect game back in the micro-game days of early digital eShop games, where they could have done an episodic series beyond the 9 chapters of the original,) but it's good to know that this game was never forgotten.

I tried playing the English translated ROM last year and... I dunno I didn't care for it too much and ended up dropping it.

Will still get this and try again though just to support the effort (if it comes to PS4), and hopefully end up liking the game.

I didn't even know this existed but to me looks like the most appealing HD2d thing we have seen.

I will try the new demo of the 3 game but I didn't like the last demo.

Yup, I'm old school rpg fan. I played the hell out of Octopath Traveler. Still waiting for FF6 to be added to Switch!

I'll give this a try!

Ok, I've held out for this long, but now is the time for me to buy a Switch. Awesome news.

Because the game is more unique rather than great. It kinda lacks a lot of thing that makes RPGs great. The short story segment means that progression is mostly meaningless and there is no grand adventure to be had or locations to explore.

A remake can work out a lot on these issues. It's a unique game and deserves its place but I'm a bit surprised that it's regarded as highly. The chinese story with the fat kid is pretty fantastic though.

The return on investment on these types of games must be significant and easy money. Especially if you can reach more platforms. This is a perfect to game to play in hand held, keep them coming. A lost treasure.

An official Terranigma release would be nice too, Earthbound is a thing now, so anything is possible!

I have never played this, but I'm interested. The art style looks great, once again HD-2D hits the spot. The Direct also mentioned that this is published by Nintendo outside of Japan, so like Octopath and Triangle Strategy, looking like a console exclusive on Switch. That, of course, could change in the future.

Octopath is on Xbox as well.

The first time I ever surfed the web was in 1995, and I found a website called The Unofficial Squaresoft Homepage. It had the names, screenshots, and box art of all these games that Squaresoft made but it never released in the West. It was kind of my first intro to realizing that they were more than just Final Fantasy and secret of mana.

Anyway, the whole site was a treasure trove but there was something about Live-A-Live that looked really interesting. So 25 years later I'm happy to finally get a chance to check it out.

Also Bravely Default II. Switch quietly building up an army of RPGs.

Probably the best announcement of the show for JRPGs.

This game really represents an era: freedom, creativity, originality, mixed in an adventure with old pixel charms. These HD-2D remakes are the key to revive all those gems that are sleeping in the closets.

Isn't it a gacha game? Low chance coming to Switch. You can always use Android emulator on PC. You can custom the control to your liking with keyboard/mouse and gamepad
Didn't know the gatcha mechanics. In any case, not a problem for me since I don't spend money on micro-transactions on mobile.
