Nintendo extends trademark for Eternal Darkness

When Dyack announced his new company QEE he stated they were working on Shadow of the Eternals.

His Kickstarter last year had Nintendo's blessing.

WiiU was in a pretty different spot May last year...

Filing an extension on a trademark in no way whatsoever confirms that a new game is in development. You really shouldn't get people's hopes up like that.

This could just be them prepping for an e-Shop re-release, HD remaster, or merely wanting to keep their trademark from expiring.\

The original Eternal Darkness did not sell very well, and after Dyack's Kickstarter crashed and burned I fail to see why Nintendo would have much interest in reviving the IP.

nah. next-level's next game for new 3ds

I'd be okay with that. It would be interesting to see the kinds of sanity effects they could do in 3D.

Plus that would keep the developer Canadian, which is clearly the most important part.

That "technically confirms" in the title is misleading. Extending a copyright on a game you might one day bring to the virtual console store or remaster is not "confirming" anything.

They could but the paragraph afterwards is a bit scary.

But I can't think why porting to another system wouldn't count as development, if it wasn't a straight emulated game.

Maybe this whole thread is JUST A SANITY EFFECT from the original game!!!

Ever think of that?!

Wasn't Denis taking about a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness on some podcast a while ago?

(I may be off the mark here)

If so was he just deflecting and this is the real thing he is working on?

Lol no his failed kickstarter was definitely real

I've been playing Eternal Darkness the past week and this gamr is a true classic. As much hate as they deserve, if it's a sequel, I can't imagine Silicon Knights/David Dyake behind the story

Didn't the lead writer for ED get thrown in jail on pedophile charges, and then the whole studio shut down?

WOW ! Please let this be true !! Eternal Darkness 2 under the supervision of Nintendo to ensure a quality product ?! Hell yes!

Yes:

Also,

In October 2014 it was reported that Denis Dyack had created a new entertainment company Quantum Entanglement Entertainment. One of the company's first projects will be relaunching the development for Shadows of the Eternals. Dyack is also considering Shadows of the Eternals as a film and television property

There's no real need to buy Next-Level, is there? They're only making games for Nintendo now anyway, so what would the point be?

Though true, from a business perspective acquiring more studious outside of Japan is hugely advantageous given the way the industry is moving.

Well, this probably spoiled Retro's reveal at E3.

I'm kind of hoping EAD is working on this and not Retro, though--I REALLY want a new Metroid Prime.

HD remaster of the original would be the final straw to get me to buy the Wii U I already know I'm going to eventually buy. Loved this game and don't currently have a good way to play SD console games these days.

Hopefully more than an HD remaster. Played through the game a year or two ago for the first time and loved it so I'd rather get something new.

Still would grab a remaster though; see how different the other immortal playthroughs are.

WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF...yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! Fuck yeah, never expected this after the precursor fiasco.
Hell yeah! Will read op now, too exciting title.

Retro Studios tackling ED would be awesome, probably the best studio to handle the property.

I also like the idea of Nintendo having it's own mainline horror adventure game in the works.

if I read it correctly, it is another patent extension. they are doing this since the forever, so...what is different this time around?

To think that I once thought I'd never play this series again...

I was once a fool~

But seriously, GREAT NEWS

An extension request for a trademark, not a patent. The difference this time is that there is a description of their ongoing efforts to get this mark into commerce. It is a technical confirmation of development, as the title of the thread says. It does not confirm that a game will be released.

Retro's new game confirmed.

Eh I really can't see that happening. It would be a massive waste of talent. They've proven themselves capable of handling some Nintendo most iconic IPs; reviving a 12 year old niche horror game by Dennis Dyack wouldn't exactly be a step up. Eternal Darkness was a decent game but it's not something you put one of your best teams on.

Nintendo funded Bayonetta 2, Fatal Frame 5 and Devil's Third, so it isn't really that unlikely.
Those are new games. A remaster of a M-rated decade-old flop isn't the same, especially when there are plenty of better-selling GameCube games to remaster.
