Nintendo responds to why regular "New" 3DS is skipping North America

Fucking Nintendo, at least make a New 3DS XL with these colors. That's why I wanted the normal size New 3DS.

Likewise. As bad as a reason as it is, it was the customizable faceplate, and those buttons. Too gorgeous.

Gaah! So upset with Nintendo over this right now! I feel like canceling my Monster Hunter 3DSXL order right this second and just forget about any New 3DS stuff until Nintendo sells the regular n3DSXL (AC Charger included.)

The real answer is probably along the lines of "we still have truckloads of unsold original NA 3DS units that we must move out somehow before releasing a replacement model" combined with "since our handheld market is shrinking we'll focus on the premium unit".

The real answer is probably that the 2DS and 3DS XL caused the standard 3DS sales to become near zero.

Exactly.

I bought an xl but that doesn't mean I didn't want a new og.

The bigger screen size ruins the picture enough to make it a negative/con of the system.

I went from must buy to I guess I'll just use my og and og xl.

The new 3DSs were only ever going to sell to enthusiasts anyway. You know, the people that populate sites like Neogaf.

Sure, and those sales are pretty miniscule in the grand scheme of things. Americans are obsessed with size. They want the biggest and most powerful. It's our culture.

Why single out Americans? The 3DS model that dominated sales in every single region is the XL.

Um because they singled out America? Lol.

They certainly did. =)

The same issue they have with sales in the US, they have in Europe. I have a feeling in America it came down to the fact that retailers don't want to give them any more space to sell their stuff. So with limited real estate, they're betting on 2DS and XL. Hopefully they address the needs of their fans and at least sell the regular 3DS via the Nintendo online store.

This "shelf space" argument is weird to me. It's 2015, we can sell things on the Internet now! In fact, that's how I bought my last 2 3DS systems.

Those take up warehouse space. Nintendo's products aren't easy money for retailers anymore. Hell, Amazon thinks so little of Nintendo that they don't even bother to sell their hardware.

I just called my local GameStop, they told me that they were told by management that Nintendo told them that the regular n3DS is coming out in North America eventually, but not for a few months after the XL launches so they can get rid of the old stock OG XLs (to get more shelf space back) as well as not confuse customers by having one console work with faceplates while the other does not. I called a couple other stores and they corroborated this information.

I wouldn't be shocked if NoA is releasing the 3DS XL first for the early adopters and core gamers who probably would only get that version, and is coming out later with the regular version for general consumers at a more wallet-friendly cost.

Still an absolutely ridiculous business decision, but at least it looks like North America is in fact getting it.

I'm still skeptical, but this would be great if true.

Why are people acting like the 3DS XL outselling the 3DS by a large margin is an indicator of how lopsided demand is? Are people forgetting that the 3DS XL is just a better designed product than the original 3DS and have been the model getting most of the bundles? The XL versions obviously will outsell the smaller model in today's market, current sales are not an indication of what things would be like if the models were more equal like the N3DS and N3DSXL

I was so pumped to upgrade too. Bleh.

I guess my old XL will have to just hold out for a while longer. I won't be picking a N3DS up until we get the standard edition in the US, or if by some miracle region lock is removed.

The worst part for me is that my 3DSXL circlepad is sticking and sluggish... So not upgrading is gonna be brutal.

edit: Wow, the neogaf reverse jinx strikes again! After googling solutions last night, I just found one... Apparently it had been pushed in too far, so I just put a knife in there and popped it out. I played through all of ALBW like that! Feels so nice now.

Please be true.

Wasn't that due to the rash of "defective" 3DS returns that Nintendo refused to buy back from Amazon?

yeah, my screen has a small defect from my friend mashing on it with a stylus so I've been wanting to upgrade forever. oh well.

That's terrible in a completely different way.

I could see this and it pisses me off so much

Really hope this is true. I'll either be waiting for this or not buying one.

Nintendo should just sell the standard N3DS on their online store and if it does well start selling them in actual stores.

I really wanted the regular n3DS for the coloured buttons, but that MM n3DSXL was reason enough to pull the trigger on the XL regardless.

Well we are talking about the same NoA that released an NES-edition XL literally the same day the N3DS was announced. So I believe it. Seems they're really pushing the old hardware. I guess if there's suckers to buy the old shit why would they sell the new one in all capacities?

So in short: blame everyone who bought a 3DS in 2014.

If Nintendo makes an XL with colored buttons I'll buy it instantly

Yep, Nintendo hates money confirmed.
That is why you will see your store get maybe 1 Amiibo in Feburary.
I am so done with their crap. Going to sell WFT and Villager later down the road.

I hope no games I care about actually make use of the new 3ds features/specs because I don't want the XL at all. I was ready to get the regular new one and a few faceplates to use along side my OG 3DS & new Gateway, but now I will just stick with the old one and custom firmware. Saves me from having to juggle save files and switch between systems depending on which feature/game I want to play though. Not to mention the money I don't have to spend now.

Waiting until the old model's stock sells down before issuing the new model is nothing new.

If this is true, they're going to get double sales from weak people who cave. (Not really a problem from their point of view, but very shitty) Also, they're working people up for no reason. If this is their plan, they should launch the nXL at retail, sell the n3DS directly or through one retailer, then launch the n3DS in more stores when OG XL stock has cleared.

Brilliant. I'm not going to pretend I know the actual motivations behind this decision, but I feel like whatever they are form a dumb misstep.

I just don't get it, NoA. I don't get you today.

Ugh, likely.

Look at that Majora's Mask faceplate? Love it. The patterns in a lot of them are really beautifully designed. There was less of a worry for scratching the system. It's brilliant.

And the SNES buttons. COME ON. And the white? It's so nice.

I was so excited at the idea of having the N3DS to be honest, -I'm a fairly small person and the XL is just to big for me. Oh well.

But of course loads of people who claim they only want the regular 3ds will still buy the xl which will justify Nintendo's decision because now they'll get two sales from that person when they release the regular n3ds down the road.

Nintendo fans are weak and you can bet Nintendo knows that very very well.

I don't know, you guys. I love the cover plates and super famicon style buttons on the new Nintendo 3DS. I went ahead and imported a black Japanese unit from Amazon today. Will be here on Friday. I... I just cannot resist, GAF. Too beautiful. Was trying to hold out till NA released it, but it never happened.
