Nintendo responds to why regular "New" 3DS is skipping North America

I don't know, you guys. I love the cover plates and super famicon style buttons on the new Nintendo 3DS. I went ahead and imported a black Japanese unit from Amazon today. Will be here on Friday. I... I just cannot resist, GAF. Too beautiful. Was trying to hold out till NA released it, but it never happened.
EU or JP? Will you keep us posted on what FW it arrives with?

Nintendo fans are weak and you can bet Nintendo knows that very very well.

I don't know what it means to be weak in this context, but I get the impression that having one N3DS and not the other isn't a deal breaker for most.

Edit: I could be wrong, it's just that it's a bit silly to call someone weak for what I see as enthusiasm.

I was going to buy this as my first 3DS... but the combination of no ac adapter and no standard 3ds size kills me. I like to carry it on me and bust it out while waiting on people.... which I seem to have to do all the time these days.

I guess I can keep waiting until they eventually release it. I have the biggest backlog of all times anyway. I was mainly interested in Xenoblade on the go... since that game takes so many hours.... beat it twice on the wii and once on dolphin. Then I sold it for like $100.

Just got home to be welcomed by this grade A bullshit. I had planned on getting a New 3DS to replace my old one, which has screen scratches from the launch day design issue Nintendo never bothered to fix. I don't want something as bulky as an XL because I actually use the system for its portability, and carry it in my coat pocket. I also prefer better pixel density and a lower price, and although it's not a decisive factor for me the customized faceplates were a nice touch.

Now I won't be getting one at all. It's especially frustrating that the model is releasing in every other market, but I can't import due to region locking. This is an insult to anyone who wanted a New 3DS. They may not sell as well as standard units, but this is still a fuck you to the segment of the audience who was anticipating it. In short, fuck off NoA.

But of course loads of people who claim they only want the regular 3ds will still buy the xl which will justify Nintendo's decision because now they'll get two sales from that person when they release the regular n3ds down the road.

Nintendo fans are weak and you can bet Nintendo knows that very very well.

Oh yes, I'm so weak in fact that I made it a point to drag my ass to the Gamestop and cancel every Nintendo related preorder I had....

Some of us actually stick to our guns. You say we'll cave but let me tell you something, I have a pretty damned good reason for not getting thr new system.

Some people want the standard size n3DS and the faceplates. Some are just as fine staying with or upgrading to the XL size.

At the end of the day it is a matter of personal preference so the rudeness being spewed is uncalled for (particularly form those opting for the XL and confused as to why others want the smaller system).

But also take into account that not every parent will be willing to spend $200+ on the nXL. And the cheapened 2DS is not necessarily an option for many due to lack of 3D if their child uses the function.

I have a young neice whom I've gotten into gaming and my old OG 3DS is perfect for her (she's 9) as she plays in 3D but doesn't like the size of my own XL. For months she has been hyped right along side me since Japan announced the new systems. I even imported the MH4G limited edition XL (let's be honest, a MH LE releasing in the US seemed all but likely) since I import Japanese games anyway. She enjoyed watching me play on it and really loved the better 3D effect. She was so enamored in fact, that she kept asking me to check if the new systems would be coming over as I had shown her pictures/video of the standard edition and its faceplates. Being a girly-girl of sorts, she liked the idea of being able to customize the system to her mood or wardrobe.

So yeah, it is disappointing to many and I had to break this news to my niece when she got home from school today as she demanded I watch the Direct befors she left this morning. I can see why there might be reasoning on Nintendo's part to not release the standard size and faceplates, however limiting a consumer's choice is in no way a good move for any company. As they say, negative word of mouth can spread a lot more quickly than positive impressions as even when the wave starts off small, it soon grows larger and larger.

I resolved not to purchase the system for myself either as I would feel bad to have one and not my neice since I promised her a new system if she made Honor Roll last semester and she did. Needless to say, she was highly upset and I couldn't even give her a good answer as to why the decision was made. So while I have no problem with having an XL, it bugs the hell out of me that this is the only option which has alienated my niece. And out of respect, I'm not going to purchase a system to wave around in her face and make her feel worse given she had rightfully earned the New 3DS. Just means she and I won't be indulging in Majora's Mask, Xenoblade or Monster Hunter 4U.

This is what I wanted to do, but the region locking is too big of an issue for me. I have a lot of data on my old 3DS that I want to transfer over.

The irrational side in me still wants to import the regular one though. Damn it Nintendo, why can''t you just release the smaller "new" 3DS? It's over-complicating things for me.

Ugh. Where did this trend of personifying an inanimate object by saying it is "skipping" something instead of saying its creator is not releasing it come from? It always give me this twitch in my neck.

I don't see the problem though. XL is better.

Ehhh, I find that the XL is too large and the screen looks worse. I like putting my DS in my pockets and taking it with me. I've tried out the XL before and I didn't like it.

I hope no games I care about actually make use of the new 3ds features/specs because I don't want the XL at all.
Totes same. I'd at least think about getting an XL in the super famicom/ white color scheme.

Can we start a petition for an Ambassador Edition at least?

I just called my local GameStop, they told me that they were told by management that Nintendo told them that the regular n3DS is coming out in North America eventually, but not for a few months after the XL launches so they can get rid of the old stock OG XLs (to get more shelf space back) as well as not confuse customers by having one console work with faceplates while the other does not. I called a couple other stores and they corroborated this information.

I wouldn't be shocked if NoA is releasing the 3DS XL first for the early adopters and core gamers who probably would only get that version, and is coming out later with the regular version for general consumers at a more wallet-friendly cost.

Still an absolutely ridiculous business decision, but at least it looks like North America is in fact getting it.

My Gamestop said nothing about this.

Nintendo makes different systems at different price points for a whole range of consumers, and New Nintendo 3DS XL simply expands those choices even further.

Except the regular 3DS is nowhere to be found, so really you have a choice between the regular XL and the new XL. Oh, or the 2DS, which pretty much skips the main feature of the handheld.

GG, Nintendo. I was going to buy both -- a regular and an XL.

EDIT: If GameStop is right, then that's cool. I'll pick one up then.

Obviously I don't mean 100% of the fans are weak. And good for people who are sticking to their guns, if every one who wanted the regular size refused to buy, it would hurt their sales enough where they would definitely release it here. I was talking about the majority of people or at least a large enough amount where Nintendo can make shifty decisions like this and not really be hurt by it, which stinks.

Sucks to not have the option, i think people should make a petition and vote with their wallets if they really want the smaller version.

This seems reasonable.

Quick GAF buy out Nintendo's old stock of 3Ds's. They'll make great coasters, chair stabilizers, wall art, things to launch at Reggie, things to launch at NOA, and so much more! The fun they'll bring you is endless, and imagine the bank you'll make when you start scalping the 3ds chargers. Hell, your investment will pay for itself, first control the charger market then CONTROL THE FREE WORLD. And make it so I can happily purchase a N3ds.

I'm...okay with this.

I'm banking on a exclusive club nintendo regular n3DS that nintendo will sell in limited quantities just to shut the fans up that want it. And I'll totally buy one (or two).

So a company notorious for confusing fucking messages (New Super Mario Bros, Wii U, 2DS, everything else) wants to avoid a confusing message?

I don't believe them.

Hum? It seems perfectly reasonable to me.

If they do release the N3DS, I will gift my MM3DSXL to my friend who has, for the longest time, not bought a 3DS despite crying about it for four years.

How about Asia reg? I though Asia reg usually play Asia-reg and US-reg games. Bummer if there is also no n3DS for Asia region. I was looking forward to get my first 3ds.

Even if this were a reason, the solution would be to obviously rename the new3DS to something else for this region.

Really want this. So disappointed we didn't at least get that. NOE did it. That hurt more that than the non announcement.

calling Shogun to confirm/deny ...

So called this before going to work, came back and read the news.

But you will still throw money at them won't you guys? It's always the same story.
This is why they will keep on doing this shit, because they know their fandom will take it anywhere they want to.

Yeah I may have been guilty of this shit in the past, but not anymore. I want my regular n3DS goddamn it.

If this is true I can wait a few months for a regular n3DS.

The guys you talked to are full of shit. That or you made it up.

Yeah I could wait. My fear is that they will release a limited xenoblade XL. I'm not strong enough to resist that depending how it comes out.

Actually I might not be able to resist either haha, I've managed to hold off on all the other limited editions, but Xenoblade is a whole diferent animal...

The guys you talked to are full of shit. That or you made it up.

can you back that up?

I currently have a backlog of 3DS games I hvae yet to even open because I don't have a 3DS yet. In terms of DS's, I've had a DS, DS Lite (which snapped in half), and a DSi. I've held an XL and it feels awkward in comparison to what I am used to. Despite owning 3DS games, some for years now, I've been hesitant about actually purchasing the system. And when I heard of the New 3DS with faceplates and whatnot I decided it was time to pull the trigger. If I didn't already have a number of games I would import a Japanese 3DS. Now I just have to play the waiting game some more. I have no reason to break down now and buy an XL seeing as I've been waiting this long to play.

That Gamestop rumor is just as comforting as Evolution's silence on Driveclub's PS+ version. Meaning it is and is not at the same time.

Best thing I could hope for is that they release the n3DS around when Xenoblade is announced and we get some faceplates as well. could still happen seeing as how they are releasing the n3DS XL a month after announcing it. Until then, I will keep hope alive!

This was too good not to use after finding it in the rhythm tengoku 3DS thread LOL

Iwata: please understand

The guys you talked to are full of shit. That or you made it up.

Either or, youre probably right.

That said, I would definitely bet money on that being the reason. Or at least one of them. I believe NoA has expresed the original XL was more profitable for them.

I'll accept this. I'll stick with the New XL for now then once the regular one comes out, I'm switching.

There've been several reasonable responses to this pointing out things like limited shelf space, the 2DS as the budget version of the system, the quiet discontinuation of the standard 3DS since the 3DS XL's release, all potential factors in NoA's decision.

Not to mention the fact that the decision makers have the sales data and no one here does. So they know, or at least think they know, which version will sell the best and are putting all their effort behind that version, instead of paying probably double the production cost to produce two different versions.

You don't like it, that doesn't mean it's stupid.

Heck, I don't even like it, that still doesn't mean it's stupid.

Thanks for taking the time to write a rational opinion. It may have already been brought up but there are a lot of pages to make it through. But the production costs wouldn't double because they are already manufacturing the regular size for other regions. So it seems to be a decision based on other ideas you mentioned. Very likely retailers don't want to carry the multiple old SKUS and then add 2 more plus and additional special models like themes. Their sales data and surveys of preference no doubt led them to this decision. Things like this are not decided based on opinion so they have some data saying this is the best idea even if we find it crazy. It's odd for sure.

Edit : wasn't there some thread not too long ago about Nintendo going after their "whales" as a strategy? Like they knew the WiiU was doing bad so they were going to lean on the loyal big spenders to make money.

Maybe this is them banking on the Super Nintendo fan that is willing to upgrade within the first year. Knowing they will buy what is available so they are offering the more expensive SKU. Then they would also assume they already have a charging cable and not include it.

Just an idea of how they could have came up with this craziness.

I don't really understand the reasoning to this, they're purposefully NOT bringing a product to market that people actually want? I'm pretty sure that's not how you run a business. You bring a product out to sell to people, you make money and the consumer is happy.

Unless there's some profit related thing going on, and it's simply not worth the investment by NoA to bring the regular n3DS to the USA. Very strange...

EDIT: The post by Scooter155 sums it up perfectly.

This makes zero sense.

They are ONLY releasing NEW XLs... so they can sell off the OLD XLs before stocking NEW Regulars?

I don't even...
