I feel you man. I'm EU myself so I'm not in danger but I would rather see Nintendo eat the cost, not US consumers.

Why should Nintendo eat the cost of America's self inflicted wound?

so i wouldnt be so quick to say the tariffs did not affect the pricing.

You can confidently say tariffs played a part in the $449 price tag as well as any future price changes we might see.

Fascinating twist to see who the real communists turned out to be
Here is a map of real communist regions.

NA isn't the continent that loves communism.

Nintendo moved production from China to Vietnam to try thinking that the tariffs would atleast be lower, but they clearly were expecting the Tariffs to be a idiotically high as they ended up.

so i wouldnt be so quick to say the tariffs did not affect the pricing.
To be totally honest I think Nintendo did the high prices because they think they will sell their stuff nontheless.

We knew they were coming, while Vietnam was a bit higher. I honestly assumed they built $100 into the cost already, this shouldn't be more than a $400 machine, see Japan cost. I guess, it's wait and see what happens with negotiations.

it definitely should, the switch seems to be delivering power in line with simlarly or more expensively priced hardware. Japan is a pecial scenario since thats homebase for Nintendo

"From what you read"....come on, it's been proven to be untrue. Even by multiple sources. Conservative ones too.. You can choose not to believe it, but the data is out there. It's based on the very absurd argument that a rich country having trade deficits is inherently bad (because wealthy countries can afford to purchase a lot more shit than poorer ones, obviously), regardless of any real tariffs involved.

Btw, several of those countries already had either free trade agreements or equivalent trade deals with the U.S., which makes this even more nonsensical.

You make fun of me for saying what I've read but then you give me more stuff to read - a newspaper beholden to corporate interests and a DC-based think tank beholden to corporate interests. We know people getting rich off the current status quo don't like these changes. Though it's true the calculations are based on stuff like trade deficits as well - not strictly traditional tariffs. There is a method to this madness, though - you're just not going to see it explained in the legacy media, because they have a a clear agenda.

Aww name calling, cute and people wonder why politics can't be discussed around here

I will gladly pay higher prices to have kept the other choice from continuing down the path we were heading the last 4 years

Well worth it to me
Yep and I'll happily pay more so the items I buy are not made by Slaves and Children.

This really is the worst time to launch a new console. Very bad luck for Nintendo.

They had plenty of time to launch the Switch 2 before all this. They waited for their geed, and we will wait for the final price for their greed. They only adjustment they can make is down if they want to not be seen as a baby steam deck with $100 games.

I don't like Mr Trump one bit, but I can't get angry at any person who has greater ambitions for their country than reasonably priced games consoles.

lol My wife literally told me i dont need eggs a couple of days ago because she was tired of paying $9 per 18 pack.

Thats the kind of energy im getting from this tweet. it's video games today. it will be Cakes and Crumble Cookies tomorrow. God knows what else in a couple of months if sanity doesn't prevail soon.
This. People are being told to sacrifice and downgrade their standards of living because of one man's ego.

This is like saying during covid.. The only thing that was negatively effected was that the NBA paused their season.

The economy is about to straight up crash, unemployment is going to be insane. Inflation way higher.

It's ok to not want your way of life ruined because of 1 persons stupidity.

It's the truth and using Quartering as a reference for anything is honestly kind of strange.
ELI5 version: true believers within the United States are currently acting identically to communist party lapdogs. They are promoting overtly anti-capitalist messages and making appeals to trust in authoritarianism in the face of all facts, evidence, and the desperate screams of every economist in the country.

This is hilarious.

People were blaming the current price on Tariffs.
Season 9 Lol GIF by The Office

I guess that was bullshit.
Sky Uno Wow GIF by X Factor Italia
It wasn't sweetie, the world wasn't hit with one round of Tariffs, Trump just did round two yesterday and they delayed the pre-orders since they don't know the effects of it, I feel like a moron explaining something so basic to a double gifer but here we are.

To be fair, the name calling started in the first few posts well before you or I showed up in the thread, but here we are. Love you, bro bro.

That's strange I thought they were Nazis? Lol.

Anyway, we'll see what happens going forward and who was right and who was wrong. All this short term drama is irrelevant.

Time will tell.

The concern is greater for those who have the most to lose. We had exactly the same debates following the Brexit referendum. You had people from wealthy southern counties in comfortably well-paid jobs berating people in impoverished working class towns that they'd no longer have the freedom to work, study and travel in Europe, as though these were things people in those places could ever have afforded to do anyway.

That's funny because this is the same kind of guy who would be criticizing the validity of the opinions of Marxist college students' protesting capitalism based on their reliance on iPads and cellphones, and their enjoyment of luxury goods like video game consoles.

I agree but there are like 3b people living in south east Asia. How do you build everything they do with the 5m unemployed people in the us?

No kidding lol. The actual point of his post went right over your head.

And that graphic isn't even accurate 😂 edit: oh nevermind I went to the source and see how it's labeled now.

Your probably right. But I would like to see the World react with a big FU Trump and calling his bluff (probably who knows right now).

I don't think you need to take it this personally - it's just business. Trump is acting out of what he believes are the best interests of America in the long run - that's his job, after all. Ironically, the leftist president of Mexico has been able to negotiate with Trump and get a lot of concessions, while Canada is throwing its toys out. It's obvious what the correct option is.

Vietnam dropped their tariffs before trump even listed the US tariffs. Seems that 10% is bare minimum that any country will be charged tho. So you can count on adding 10% at least.

Yeah German here. I'm concerned this is the route our countrys heading too. Right wing is rising pretty hard and I'm concerned after having endured Trumps BS there will be a far right government in my country to and the BS will continue here...

There are a LOT of clowns in here.

America voted to reverse course on exporting GDP produced by its middle class to the rest of the world. They may pay a little more for a Switch.. they may not. Remains to be seen.

HOWEVER those who wish to work will finally be in demand. Wages will increase. It'll be a nice counter balance to the inflationary results of money printing…. WHICH IS THE REAL REASON TODAY that your new Switch is 450 USD.

In a little over 60 days America has secured an incredible amount of investment in jobs, factories and cash. I WISH we had that in my country… we just have inflation without the increase in wages. We just have our people increasing their personal debt.

Firstly, I pre ordered my Switch 2 here in Australia straight after the Nintendo video presentation of the Switch 2 a few days ago! So no waiting for us down under!

In terms of pricing, Mario Kart World is selling for $114 AUD which equates to $69 USD. For Donkey Kong, it's retailing at $104 AUD which equates to $63 USD. And the console bundle with Mario Kart World is retailing at $769 AUD which equates to $469 USD! So for once, it seems like us Aussies are getting a relatively good deal when it comes to the USA in terms of pricing! I can tell you that buying games through PSN, we pay around $109 or so for Sony games and have been since launch. If they have any special editions then they come in at $139 or so. So we have been getting screwed over for a while...

I don't think Trump is trying to do whats best for his country. I think he is doing what he "thinks" is best for himself. But yeah, I fear the EU will not stay firm when negotiating with Trump and will cave in easily...sadly...

If the tariffs are reciprocal, can't Japan just undo their tariffs against us if they don't want exposure to them?

That would only work for products produced in Japan (Switch is manufactured elsewhere) and:

Vietnam dropped their tariffs before trump even listed the US tariffs. Seems that 10% is bare minimum that any country will be charged tho. So you can count on adding 10% at least.

Likely because you can easily afford it. Make no mistake, this is a great economic experiment that has unknown long term effects. The overwhelming amount of Economists think this is a really bad idea. Not to mention all the times in history when tariffs went very, very poorly.

This is a gamble, and if it goes where most think it is going, the political landscape in 2026 is going to be a bloodbath. Or not, maybe it all turns out really well, but I wouldn't want to bet on those odds.

The 10% is on the imported cost though not the actual end cost.

I think if it stayed at 10% nothing would change price wise. It's close enough that the margins wouldn't be terribly impacted. The current amount would be disastrous though.

You start by challenging the notion that material consumption is the principal metric of human well-being. That having three iPads, four smartphones, two Switch consoles, four flat-screen TVs, a PS5, an XBOX and a smart refrigerator is the indication of a life being lived well. Far as I can tell, most of this shit has made us infinitely more miserable than we could ever have imagined.

Do digital downloads count as something you import? Idk where they would really be considered made. They country that created it or the spot where you actually download from? Or is that all irrelevant
