Nintendo Switch Game Save Data Tied to One System, Nintendo Confirms

Ugghhh Nintendo please wake da **** up.

Now I have to buy Mario Kart again, unlock everything again and do the same on my friends Switch who is just a filthy casual that you cater to.

No surprise there.
May the homebrew artisans save us from this stubborn decision (3DS save managers saved my ass multiple times).

When Nintendo announced Nintendo Accounts and My Nintendo a while ago, they talked about using cloud data in reference to saves. However, how they intend to implement it (the slide was only about interaction between theur mobile and console efforts) is a big mystery. Personally, I hope this feature might come with the system's soft relaunch this fall with all the online features (and probably a major OS update, too). But I can't really say I expect it.

Please at least enable copying to MicroSD cards, Nintendo. I want to be able to make SOME kind of backup.

Hahahaha, Switch just gets better and better. Tying saves to one system is so barse ackwards it's comical.

It's just astounding that Nintendo would think this is a great way to deal with things. Maybe they're going to add this as a paid extra for their online?

Personally, i don't see anything wrong with this.

What happens if your switch breaks and needs repair?

Could you backup the data you put on an external Wii U hard drive on a PC?

So let's say something happens to console or you hard drive could you then take that data you put on PC and put it back on a hard drive and use it on Wii U?

Sort of.

I back my Wii U USB HDD up to my NAS using a PC. I can restore to bigger or same size other USB HDD (tested), but it all still works only on the original Wii U, can't transfer the HDD to another Wii U and use it there.

So still no protection against a broken console, but some protection against broken HDD.

I expect the Switch microSD cards would be the same, you can probably image them and restore the images, but they'll still only work on the original switch console.

I don't see a problem.
(Oh no I am defending it!)
If you want to play at a friend's house, well that is why it is portable.
If you do not have the system yet, change that. If your friend does not have it yet...well sorry for them.
Sadly there are alot of people who ruin things for everyone else.
I know people are chomping at the bit for the first exploit to be found in the system but that does not mean that companies have to make it that easy.

No, the Wii U uses a custom HDD format so you can only ever use them on the one Wii U without reformatting them and they can't be read by a PC

Sony don't have a history of refusing to fix this sort of problem. There's still no way to get saves off of a Wii U.

What I meant was putting the saves from PC back on the same Wii U with the same NNID. Not to transfer saves to a different unit and user.

I'm pretty sure they confirmed a while ago that Nintendo Accounts were envisioned with cloud saves. I expect this feature to come with the system's relaunch with all the online features (and probably a major OS update, too) this fall.

They sadly haven't announced any plans or intentions for system-wide cloud saves. That's as wrong as people saying that My Nintendo would become the Switch's achievement system.

Like I said in another thread, this problem does concern me as my Little Brother will be affected by this when he gets his own switch, we're currently sharing, so his save data will be stuck on my Switch.

I am hoping that in the future they will release a firmware update to move save data to the micro SD card.

I heard it's easier to load data if it's just reading it.

Nope, like the Switch Wii U game data were locked to a console.

Bro, no way. Wii U had Miiverse, Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, and Amazon at launch. I thought Wii U was very decent at launch.
I can actually play a game the same minute I launched it, that's already better than WiiU.
Youtube app is still to this day fucking useless and Netflix didnt' exist in my country when WiiU launched so...yeah
and don't get me started on TVii
Only one cloud account per Switch. =)

j/k
Dear god! NO.

Here's the thing, if Nintendo offering cloud saving as their only option for data management then it better be free as I an not paying it.

I was thinking, "The price of portable home console design," but did the DS tie saves to one console?

DS game data saved on carts, but with the 3DS you could move your digital games and save data from one SD card to another.

You don't see a problem in not being able to backup hours and hours of progress? Games like Zelda are huge. If a save (or the system) gets corrupted, that's potentially a huge loss of time. And if you only play a few hours a week, that's potentially months worth of progress. Not everyone has time to binge games.

I assume they do it for security reasons. It sucks because not only limit them to a single device, but also because they take space from the insanely limited internal storage.

But at least it would be nice to store them in the cloud, and to allow you to download them in other.

I'm not defending but this is the reason:

1) Switch cartridges are Read-only
2) A Micro SD card isn't provided
3) Games therefore save to the Switch

There needs to be a memory save transfer tool that allows game saves to be transferred to Micro SD when one is present.

Wow, this completely negates the fact that games are tied to accounts instead of hardware now.

I mean what's the point in redownloading the game on another system if all your progress has been lost and you have to start over from scratch?

So fucking stupid, and as someone who still has back ups (plural) of my PS1 game saves, this is a big, big draw back to my ever getting this system.

They need to sort this shit out ASAP.

Fuck Nintendo for this, pieces of shit. I'm particularly angry about this because my Wii U was stolen last September. I lost everything. Ended up having to homebrew my replacement Wii U and inject complete save files for multiplayer games like Mario Kart. Can't touch Xenoblade X ever again because there's no way I'm playing it all over again.

Assholes.

And if you upgrade to a new revision? Or if your old one breaks and you buy a new one?

More evidence that buying a Switch now is pointless, and this thing is rushed beyond belief. Those who wait till later in the holidays will be rewarded with a much more complete system.

They better unveil Cloud Saves with their online functionality as soon as that thing drops.

I imagine DeNA is working on it, as they'll want to make an upgrade to New Switch as easy as possible.

This is probably not a big issue for most users and we don't know if this will ever be changed.

If my Switch breaks I can't play my save while it's being fixed? Or bring whatever save to a friends? Just kind of annoying.

Not only that, but if it breaks and repair services give you back a different unit (for any reason, even if not beyond repair), you just lost 100% of your progress in every single game you own (minus any online-only saves-to-server stuff).

I guess Nintendo will do some kind of cloud save at some point in time or make it possible to move data from internal to external memory, it doesn't sound like that would be so hard to do, their software engineers should be able to write that code in a few minutes/hours I guess...

No backup saves are a no-no.

Your system breaks and you have to get a new one - you've lost all your data.

Your data gets corrupted, you've lost all your data.
