Nintendo Switch Game Save Data Tied to One System, Nintendo Confirms

Isn't that how it works with everything? Even my PC can't save if I have no memory to save it to.

Won't even bother trying to argue.

I lost a 100+ hour MH3U save when my Wii U crapped out and I've vowed never to buy another Nintendo system until they've got a modern cloud saving solution that supports playing on multiple systems. Sounds like I need to wait until at least the fall on the Switch.

Microsoft doesn't get enough credit for how well they've handled cloud saves on Xbox One since the beginning; unlimited storage, auto synced, not tied to Gold.

You have a very odd PC if you cannot move your save files to a cloud, external HDD, SD card, or to a new and larger HDD.

Different question, how much is Nintendo paying you for your posts?

Microsoft's cloud infrastructure will always be best-in-business for gaming unless Amazon makes an actual, serious push into the industry. They really deserve a lot of credit, even for the Crackdown server-side computing stuff.

Nintendo always seems to have these little dealbreakers.

Guarantees I will never buy their systems. Doesn't matter to me if Zelda has 100 metacritic. There are great games on other systems that don't fuck your convenience for no reason.

Hey we got region free this time.

Baby steps.

I would not be surprised if the paid online for multiplayer in the fall has nothing to do with game saves. You might be waiting years, or forever. Sorry to head about the save game loss, that's really crappy.

The point I was making was a simple if you run out of space you have to delete something on any platform.

The average person is not going to be capable of filling up 32GB (25) of storage with just save files. You can install downloads to an external storage device so 100% of the internal storage can be dedicated to save files.

Yeah, but can transfer them out.
I hope nintendo implements cloud saves and/or transferable saves on one of the next OS updates.

Would be a nice addition we really need some way to backup saves in case of system failure. Seems they are absolutely terrified of leaving open any kind of attack vector for homebrew.

I do think cloud saves are coming (because the mobile games have them and DeNA is doing infrastructure for both mobile and Switch), but I've already been fucked by this. My first Switch unit has a dead pixel, which I noticed about eight hours into Zelda yesterday. Now I need to start using a new unit (luckily I ordered two), but I have to start the game over.

It's completely stupid. No excuses for it. And if their justification is trying to keep their system from getting hacked into, then learn from actual leading tech companies and make security better. Don't cripple the user experience and hide behind the guise of security.

This really doesn't make sense, considering the ability to back up saves off system storage exists already in other Nintendo OSes.

It's Nintendo.

Applying logic and reason is going to get you nowhere.

Personally I love the Wii U and I think I'm just gonna stick with it. Too much silliness surrounding Switch. Hopefully a revision of the OS and system comes down the line.

I was under the impression that part of the Switch online service was going to be cloud saves?

Is this not actually true?

As far as I know from reading these threads, they haven't actually explicitly said they are planning on cloud save game backups yet. I hope they do, but I am not expecting it.

That sucks. I'm definitely going to be giving my Switch a very lengthy close look whenever it arrives before investing any time in Zelda or other games. I'd hate to discover something like the whites are off or a dead pixel a week later and lose all my game progress because I need to exchange it.

Truer words!

Posts like this confuse me. It's not like you have a choice what platform to play future Nintendo games on it. You can't stick with the WiiU and play any future Nintendo games ever again as Zelda is it and it's officially dead. You won't get Arms, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade 2, likely other future games like Smash Bros and Pokemon...etc.

How does one "stick" with WiiU when Nintendo won't release any more games for it ever again?

More evidence that buying a Switch now is pointless, and this thing is rushed beyond belief. Those who wait till later in the holidays will be rewarded with a much more complete system.

I think you're right but don't expect Nintendo to do something like not tie saves to the system. FFS they added friend codes back in after removing them for Wii U.

I wish they'd just approach their development of system features with a "What do customers want" attitude as opposed to "How much paranoia can we get away with?"

i gave my Switch a thorough look through, but am not familar with how to see if "whites are off"

any advice to check this?

Like shown here. It's one of those things that you might totally not even notice at first, but then one day you realize when it's sitting next to your phone the thing looks a bit too warm colored... and then you can't ever not see it and have to exchange your system with all your games tied to it, needing to start everything over.

And those of us that bought it today are loving this Zelda game!
It's funny that whenever something bad is found out about the Switch, so many people swing by to say "But Zelda!" as if that makes any fucking difference at all. Corporate apologism is one hell of a drug.

The only benefit from the days of memory cards. You didn't have to worry about this. Considering the switch is using cartridges I figured it would save to the cartridge like back in the day.

Isn't that how it works with everything? Even my PC can't save if I have no memory to save it to.

No, you can save to cloud storage because your PC has an open OS and a Web browser. Your PC can also transfer anything in its file system to external media.

Yeah that must work. Makes the idea of preventing piracy moot though doesn't it? If you can access the SD card and edit the save that way it could still lead to hacks. Just a really pointless oversight I guess

Edit:

Now I'm confused. What if the internal memory is full? You just can't ever save?

I would assume so, unfortunately.

Yeah, but can transfer them out.

Hmmm, I had a micro SD card plugged in right from the start. It automatically saves to it instead of the internal memory. Just plugged my SD card in my MacBook and I can transfer them to my laptop for backup.

Isn't Switch not going to have cloud saves. As for not being to be able to move saves isn't that normal with every console.

If Pokémon released on Switch then people would move save files and copy them and clone Pokémon

Personally, i don't see anything wrong with this.

So if your system breaks, you don't see anything wrong with having to start over? I can't believe I'm having to explain how this is bad. Somehow this concept it tough for some to grasp.

No.

And no.

More like I hope not, and no. There's no confirmation the Switch will get cloud saves. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo felt footing the bill for servers that provide access for a half dozen 64MB saves per game per Switch owner was a completely unrealistic expectation of them, even for an online service they are charging for. Who knows, maybe they set it up so you pay for each 100MB, like an extra $5/year for every 100MB of cloud storage you need past the first 100MB lol.

Yes, no confirmation so far. Until I see the thing working I won't believe otherwise, even people like Reggie saying it might come won't change my mind (friend codes, anyone).

whew, thanks. i guess i really lucked out on my system, thankfully.

i hate that we're still doing this lottery with N's handhelds :/

What's sad is that I can envision them doing something like this!

i thought it would be tied to the carts like 3ds

carts are read-only.

This right here is the most infuriating part for me. They already have a system in place that allows for a simple way to save games, move them across systems, and never worry about "running out of space". But no, they make the carts read-only, provide no cloud infrastructure, and have apologists on the Internet tell people to "buy an external storage device" if you want to give yourself more breathing room for game saves.

Fuck that.

Well my wife and I each have a PS4 and gaming PC, so the Wii U is like our family system.

We can play pretty much every Zelda ever made on it, and to us Nintendo games are family ones... never get tired of playing Smash, Mario Kart, SMB, Donkey Kong, Bayonetta, etc...

I can't really justify a Switch from that angle - but our situation isn't the normal one either.

Edit: I will probably grab a revision model with a price cut eventually whenever Xenoblade hits and I DEFINITELY will if they make a new Metroid.

I lost a 180hr, every quest completed, Xenoblade Chronicles save the same way so I feel you.

I don't think you would be able to use that save on another Switch. Most likely it has some sort of information about the console.

Why the hell is this still a problem on the Switch? It's like Nintendo didn't pay attention to the last decade of video game consoles.

the 3ds was more modern with save data, with backup and restore options but I don't think the wii u ever really got it right - while you could copy it to a usb drive, the USB drive was encrypted for that wii u install so if your wii u died, that drive was garbage. Now of course with the jail broken wii u you can manipulate save data as you wish.

I imagine save backup/restore is going to be tied to their online functionality, with cloud save being the way to save and restore.

I remember my wii u dying, having to reformat it, and being flabbergasted that when I reinstalled and ran Mario Kart 8 all my online progress was gone.

It would help if Nintendo told people these things before they bought the console and plated hours of Zelda.

This issue isn't even a problem it's a feature. The idea is to discourage cheating by copying other people's saves. I agree with their policy of making game saves non transferable.
