Nintendo Switch Game Save Data Tied to One System, Nintendo Confirms

This is just frustratingly stupid. It's a really cool system except for all these nagging issues that could have been seemingly avoided with ease. You would think after the Wii U never getting off the ground, Nintendo would be dotting all their i's and crossing all their t's with the Switch and not letting all these issues pile up.

I 100% assumed you could copy save data wherever you wanted. Didn't even cross my mind you wouldn't be able to.

Wake me in a year when Nintendo has all this straightened out, then I might pick up a Switch.

I have some bad news for you. The Wii U's been out for over four years. It has the same absurd problem, and it always will. Nintendo wants it this way, for unjustifiable reasons. Don't count on Nintendo to "straighten it out" with Switch. To them, nothing is in need of fixing.

I don't see what the problem with this. If your save corrupts it just means you get to experience the beauty of Switch games again.

Nintendo just doesn't get it and does stuff like this on purpose.

Wait, so the account system is still useless? I heard that it would work during today's GiantBomb stream.
You can't remotely deauthorise the active Switch (but Nintendo can). You need to go into a menu and deactivate it before tying your account to a new one.

Man part of me hopes there's some massive system wide fault that requires people to replace their system, just so Nintendo has to address this issue or face millions of angry Zelda owner losing their 70 hours of gameplay. Well, time will tell.

Guess everyone who buys a Switch is never planning on upgrading to a new, lighter, smaller, more powerful, longer lasting version in a couple of years either, or if they do, they must just be fine with losing all their game data when they do.

This is so shit. Need replacing your unit for whatever reason? Have fun losing your 50 hours of progress in Zelda. This NEEDS to be fixed.

I wouldn't be too worried about that. I'm sure Nintendo will have a similar system to the 3DS where you set aside an afternoon to transfer your content from one console to another at incredibly low speeds (but with cute Pikmin animations!).

Maybe they'll bring back system transfer :lol

This seems ridiculous. Issues with your console to the point of needing a replacement? bye bye all your save files? Want to upgrade to a newer model? bye bye savefiles?

Surely this will change in the future?

yeah, they'll at least have some dumb thing in place to help you upgrade to a new system

i just hope nothing goes wrong on my current one til then 😕

I wonder if it's an attempt to prevent user-edited save files from creating overflows, or just a lack of foresight.

The Wii U's been able to transfer save data from one system to another for a while, but only as a complete system transfer.

That feature was introduced after launch, so I'd expect the Switch to be the same. It's definitely not ideal, but you're probably going to be able to take data forward once they have a reason to let you.

Knowing them it's to prevent piracy. But shit like this doesn't work and they only end up fucking with the costumer experience.

How? The save files themselves didn't enable hacks. They just put you at a spot in a particular game where you would perform the hack. At least that's how the old TP hack and some others worked. If you can't use the save, you can still just play the game to that point and still do the hack.

One step forward and one step back with the switch so far, having saves tied to the system is so weird, it can't be that hard to connect such a thing to the profile/account can it? Nintendo make some weird design choices.

Well at least the Switch is portable so I can play my games at another persons house.
But in general this is just plain stupid. I wonder why Nintendo is so resilient to learning from past mistakes.

Or maybe it's not really an issue for people outside game forums.

Switch is rushed out the gate and only has the bare minimum functionality

Both 3DS and WiiU had their data management functions updated and enhanced during the life

I don't see this as the end of the world, but it's a major headscratcher all the same. This is basic level shit that Nintendo once again seem either ignorant of, or resistant to for whatever reason. Is there any official word if this functionality is being added in the future, or is this just how it'll be?

Typical Nintendo, never expect change.

Same shit as the vita, but at least they had cloud saves from day 1.

You could export your Vita save games to a PC/Mac from early on. Not sure if it was even possible from launch on but I think so.

Also it saved on the memory card, which you could get out when your device gets damaged.

This is the worst thing yet.

As someone who has been playing the hell out of Zelda and loving it, this scares the crap outta me.

Losing hours of progress because they don't let you back up your saves is unacceptable.

The Switch will prioritize external storage if it's available but if something gets installed or saved internally, you have no way of moving it right now.

Wait, does this mean if the save is on a Micro SD I can never change the Micro SD card without losing the save? I guess it should still work if you copy all the data to a new one right? I guess.... Maybe. This whole thing is crazy. Never expected something like this would be missing

You can have multiple cards without issue, to my knowledge.

I'm sure backing it up and copying to a larger card would work too.

No no no no. The save is not on the SD card. The game itself can be downloaded to the SD card, but the save is always on the internal memory.

Yeah that must work. Makes the idea of preventing piracy moot though doesn't it? If you can access the SD card and edit the save that way it could still lead to hacks. Just a really pointless oversight I guess

Edit:

Now I'm confused. What if the internal memory is full? You just can't ever save?

The game would probably prompt you to make space.

The only good thing about living in a third world country is that I was forced to avoid getting the console at launch, which means I'll be able to wait for the Switch v1.0 before getting one. Seriously, all these missing features and ridiculous decisions sound like a bad joke. What the hell is Nintendo thinking?

No surprise there.
May the homebrew artisans save us from this stubborn decision (3DS save managers saved my ass multiple times).

This is a move almost assuredly aimed at preventing homebrew. Wii, 3DS, and Wii U were all hacked fairly early on using distributed save game exploits.
