Nintendo Switch Online price increase. Is it justified?

I would actually be fine with this. If it had another couple third parties in there for launch day.

I assume Ubisoft will be there on launch day with something.

I assume EA will be there on launch day with something.

I kinda assume MS could be there on launch or very early in the first few months.

So if they added:

Mario rabbids double pak or Assassins creed Iraq. Whatever it is called.

EA add in Mass Effect, Sims, Star Wars or Titanfall (now rumored)

MS- Halo or Goldeneye deluxe (straight up) this would be a shock wave on launch. Especially Halo.

I assume there is a couple more games. I’m fine with that! MP4, MK9 is a nice 1-2 punch, and BoTW deluxe with additional content would be cool.

Tekken is a nice addition. So is Elden Ring. Solid launch day!

Take a course on inflation. It's important.

A person can't be a citizen of the world and not know about inflation. What it is, why it exists and why it's innevitable. It's all gonna make sense.

Prices go up, and they're gonna go up across the board, always.

Not sounding good if true...
Botw remastered...huh??its like 8 years old.
Metroid and mk9 aren't good enough launch titles, I was hoping for new Mario or a luigis mansion 4 at least.
I don't care for the elden ring or any of the old shit.been played to death like years ago.

I don't care.

Litteraly never subscribed to any subscription from all of them and I'm fine. I consider them almost as scam since you can play most of the same games on PC with free online.

And about their "free" games, they aren't: you own NOTHING at the end.

I want this stupid online subscription model dead.

Online was free with PS3, thank you Microsoft for having made legitimate paid online with your stupid "Xbox Live" subscription 🖕🖕🖕

I dont think any of them are confident to make online free again and leave Subscriptions model for the months games and features etc like PS3 days.
Yes I blame MS too lol

I've been way more informed than you are, son:

I realize FED printed 10 trillion $$$ out of thin air in 2020 to bolster the scamdemic, but still technology should make everything cheaper.

This is the reason you don't pay a billion bucks for a modern Intel CPU compared to Intel 4004 released in 1971.

Nintendo kids haven't bought a new Nintendo system since the 90s, I reckon.

These days Nintendo consoles are a bit expensive for kids (not to mention smartphones are way more popular), so it's mostly adults with Nintendo nostalgia that buy them.
Thats a whole lot of nostalgia for whats soon to be the best selling console of all time.

A whole lot.

For 70$ youll get voice chat without needing your phone! Welcome to the next generation of multiplayer!
I would be surprised if Nintendo ever implements in-game voice chat regardless of how much their online service costs. There are so many young kids on Nintendo devices that Nintendo isn't going to want the liability. Requiring a mobile phone is by design.

It doesn't matter if it's justified or not. Nintendo has both the brand loyalty and pricing power to do this, on top of coming off their most successful system of all time. Any company that likes money will maximize that leverage when given the opportunity.

Nintendo Switch Online is total dog shit. I have the $30AUD version because it lets me play FZero99 and Tetris99, but if they jack up the price, that'll be a big fucking no. That much of an increase for a few shitty roms and the ability to play on P2P servers? Fuck off.

I'm not saying modern kids never play on Nintendo consoles.

In reality it's 90s kids (modern millennial parents) that buy Nintendo consoles and their kids also play on them. As simple as that.

Currently you can buy 1 year of NSO for $20.

It seems Nintendo plans to adopt Sony's pricing scheme and maybe remove the cheaper tier? (even if they don't remove it, the price gulf between 20 and 70 is too high, so expect them to increase that too)

How is this justified? Adding party chat (most likely p2p, which is free) is not a compelling reason.

Will Switch 1 owners get screwed (20 -> 70) if they just wanna play Mario Kart/Splatoon online?

Should people stack a few more years of regular NSO at $20?

You really trying to discuss value in a pay 2 online game subscription? There is no value, its just there to fuck you over because you chose a locked down drm platform instead of PC. Something that is normally free is being arbitrarily taken away simply because they *can* take it away. If these companies thought they could charge you to pause your game they'd do it.

I still think Switch 2 even with a bigger screen should have stayed 720p for handheld mode, maybe 900p maximum, spend the extra power on better quality AA, lighting, framerate, better battery life / lower power usage, etc… no need to really push high resolution in handhelds.

No. At the start it was massively overpriced which even Nintendo acknowledged. We’re now where we should be: £34.99 a year for a very good library of retro games.

This will probably make or break whether I continue investing in Nintendo as a platform as I’m not paying the high prices we see on PS and Xbox. If they go high I’ll probably buy the Switch 2 in its twilight years with their single player games.

In PS3 vs XB times, gamers have accepted "pay for network access" model.

Now we get what we deserve.

That price is very possible though.

At the moment those tariffs aren't looking like bluffs.
The point is unless you are Nostradamus, Nintendo or anybody else has any idea when the tariffs will come in or at what rate and for which countries yet, or if it will be a blanket tariff or exempt electronics. It's a purely political comment
How can Nintendo work out a price taking into account a tariff that has yet to be brought in for a release date that may be before any tariff.

bullshit.

If it sounds made up it probably is made up.
There is not one thing on that list in the OP I couldn't make made up myself.
Pure guesswork

If the upscale and fps boost isn’t a free update, yo ho me hearties

It's Nintendo.
I would bet money backwards compatible games will run the same as on Switch 1 (though they'll probably max out their original resolution and framerate targets). Then they'll release remasters with improved performance and resolution as a separate SKU for $60-70, and if they are feeling very generous they MIGHT offer a $10-20 discount to people who already own the game on Switch 1

we've reached the point where a completely randum rumor isn't tagged as such and warrants a discussion based on random numbers? It doesn't even seem to come from the usual sources...

It is a random Twitter account that posts whatever they want to their 2k followers. It's obviously fake.
But let's say it is real...I do not think Switch online is worth $70. $50 is ok, but that is kind of stretching it. Online+cloud saves+roms isn't really a great value. $50 is cheap enough that I don't think much about it even though the value probably isn't there. Once things go above that then I start to think on if I would rather save the money or not.
Its wild to me people are paying for roms of old games they already own and played to death with switch online. You dont freaking rent nintendo games. You are supposed to own them. Cant believe people let the no vc on switch slide. Without an achievement system and all those style features sony, steam, and xbox has the nso shouldnt be costing anything. How do you charge money for old roms everyone probably has on there t.i 83 calculators without and achievement system? And then they charge a separate fee for the pokemon stuff lol? Man Nintendo consumers are the worst. None of nintendos online stuff ever made any logical sense to me.

People are on here saying, “Yeah if they add gamecube.”well herpa de derp. Uhh buddy pikmin 2 remastered, metroid remastered, paper mario thousand year door. Mario allstar collection. Soon twilight princess etc. Hello genius! You already own the freaking games. What in the hell are we doing here people? They need vc and they need achievements. There is no value and purpose to rent og nintendo games when nothing is demanding about them and they can be emulated on 20 year old console.

A increase for a improved online component that includes GC games makes sense. $70 doesn't, try lower.
This hypothetical/ made upon price increase would only apply to Expansion Pack. Since it’s highly unlikely any more new platforms would be added to the base NSO. Expansion Pack is where the built-in/planned future growth is for the service. Nintendo’s made it really clear for years that the intent is for NSO to grow in features and services over time. And each time something new is added, N64, GBA, DLC packs for AC, MK, Splatoon, it’s always come to Expansion Pack. And the price was high to begin with because they’ve continually invested more and more over time into content and added platforms. It’s prolly gonna grow again to coincide with the Switch 2 launch and the next major DLC, etc.

I subscribe only to psplus because they actually have online features like built in voice chat, achievements, friends list where you can add anybody anytime without friends codes, talk and text, and newer games that im interested in that i havent played to death. They will ban people and ps is harder to hack than switch is. I seen people putting hacked pokemon on nintendo lol.

I never payed for switch online. Its basically a dumby tax and fake added value with the old games when they should have a vc. Even sony lets you purchase ps1 and such games. If they had better emulation solution they would let you purchase the ps3 games. Nintendo doesnt have the, we cant bring these old games to the next platform excuse because they always been 2 generations behind with old tech and games can run on anything no problem with a small file size and no real work to do it. Nintendo has no excuses just a money grab.

I wish i would pay for switch online to play only 5-7 games only the whole gen with archaic dreamcast like online. Smash, mario kart, pokemon that also had separate extra pay at one point i dont remember what its called. Pokebank?

Meanwhile on the other platfroms i got 20-30 games or more that come out per year with online features and coop that far surpass any nintendos online. Not only that but ill be spending thousands of hours in them each. Multiple games with all the data and stat tracking etc. no, i use tilt controls pre written text.

I do have a beefy PC, but it's not possible to play Splatoon there, you know?

Even emulators don't support online MP... not everyone is a SP-only gamer.

Most likely they will reach 1080p with DLSS.

I was a PS3 gamer back then and I thoroughly enjoyed Uncharted 2/3 MP (even though many people thought it was inferior compared to Gears of War MP, I had great fun with it).

All these features are free without PS+.

So, I just received a mail from Nintendo mentioning the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will increase price on March 1. Since I'm in Argentina I would go from AR$ 48059 to AR$ 58179 (which would be from USD 45 to USD 55 without taxes and stuff like that), a bump of USD 10 which is better than the USD 20 that was mentioned.
