Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

Out of all the games in that post, Persona 5 is probably one of the more realistic ones.
Probably, but I can't speak for the other games. Maybe my sentence just feel a little too extreme.

Perhaps not at launch, but Persona 5 seems like a natural fit.
After all they got Persona 4 onto Vita.
On Vita, not on 3ds. And it's an upgraded version.
I'm not saying it's impossible, I just don't see that as the most likely thing to happen, except if for whatever reason, the port to Switch is so easy they can release it eyes closed.
We've yet to see a Persona leaving a sony platform. Maybe if they plan a Persona 5 +, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Atlus will release other stuff before a Persona comes.
(I hope I'm wrong, the more games the better).

Yes, the 3rd parties tried their best to intentionally sabotage Nintendo's systems.

No but seriously, that's in some heavy conspiracy territory, no offense.

...

Have you seen the 3DS launch games? Nintendo purposely released weak first party games in order to give third parties a chance. (Because, during the Wii years third parties were always bitching about Nintendo games taking away all of the sales.) Iwata mentions this in an Investors Q & A when an investor questioning Nintendo's first party line up. What did the 3DS get launch wise that actually deserved to sale well?

Yep, Nintendo certainly should just ignore every 3rd party and just do their own games.

That would certainly work well.

Nintendo should show them, but they shouldn't be the priority.

Nintendo fans should be happy.

We pretty much get two E3's next year!

I wanted to say as part of my predictions I believe Sonic Mania will officially be announced at January 12.

I don't expect full reveals for all the upcoming games in January because E3 is right around the corner in June. I believe 3D Mario and Retros game will be fully unveiled at E3 2017.

Out of all the games in that post, Persona 5 is probably one of the more realistic ones.

What games seemed unrealistic?

Alot of the games I listed have either 360, ps3, or Vita versions. While a different architecture, I would think those games are all portable to Switch.

For Honor, RE7, south park, Battlefront, may not be. I don't know. But I found those games more likely around launch than ffxv, and battlefield 1.

Ghost Recon Shadow Wars :( (and Pilot Wings)

It's not a main release but Persona Q happened, shows Atlus is definitely willing to put Persona on non-Sony platforms.

In terms of game announcemens I'd expect

Zelda Breath of the Wild
- The big launch game

Splatoon Remix
- New maps, characters and customisation

Mario Kart Switch
- 4 new cups, retro and DLC cups included in this
- new characters
- the standard MK8 cups not included here but will come later as free DLC, this is to make the game feel new as there are 4 new cups
- Switch item mechanic

Smash Complete Edition
- all previous DLC included
- Snake and Raiden announced more characters to be announced

Mario Sports Superstars
- Also out on 3DS the same day but this is now a multiplatform release like Zelda. Switch version has better graphics.

Monster Hunter XX
- Same as above

Modern Warfare Remastered
- When Activision releases the standalone version the Switch version will release the same time as the other platforms for the standalone version.

Borderlands Hansom Collection
- This is already out in NVidia Shield and will be a easy port. Can play splitscreen multiplayer on one Switch device without TV like Mario Kart.

Metal Gear Rising
- Same as above a quick dirty port as it's already on NVidia Shield woukd make a decent launch title for Japanese audience

FIFA 16
- full FIFA fame portable has huge potential to be huge in Europe. Also local multiplayer without TV

NBA2K16
- same as above

Super Mario 128
- I'm expecting a high budget Mario that rivals 64

Tekken 7
- Multiplatform release alongside the other versions

Injustice 2
- Same as above

Pikmin 4
- The next big game after launch games

Retro Game
- I think it will be a Kid Icarus game which will be a big action adventure game like Darksiders, God of War and Zelda. Will have on rails sections too like the 3DS games and huge bosses.

Dragon Quest XI
- will be same version as PS4 DQ

Sonic
- multiplatform Sonic game will be shown of as well a Sonic Mania being announced for Switch

Sounds pretty good, but you don't expect Square Enix at all in terms of Final Fantasy? No Monolith Soft? No Atlus? No Nintendo new IP?

This takes place in Japan. I expect Japanese developers coming out on the stage from all around.

I'm not really following your logic here.

If it were technically feasible on 3DS I'm sure it would have been done. They did Persona Q instead.
Forgot about Persona Q. Yet it was on the 3ds, many years after launch.
And it's still a first person type games like the 3ds SMT.
I'm just saying I would be surprised to see a main Persona game anytime soon on Switch.
But I'm all for it.

The spinoffs have left PlayStation before (P4 Arena/Ultimax, Persona Q, even Devil Survivor and Catherine technically). Also no reason a theoretical Switch P5 Crimson couldn't also be an upgraded port, it's really a PS3 game after all.

I don't know if it'll happen for sure, I sort of expect a TMS#FE port first actually, but if it doesn't it probably means Sony locked down/moneyhatted exclusivity.

Hope so. I mean, I'm already 150+ hours in P5 on PS3, but by no means I'd be against a Switch port or release of an upgraded version.
Good games should be playable by everyone.

Nintendo better show a portable franchise running on Switch, or else people won't buy into Nintendo combining their development efforts. MH is a given at least, so is AC but won't be released for a while, and Pokemon might be too early.

I'm optimistic and pessimistic at the same time.

I think that most developers don't say anything because of NDAs. They are not allowed to mention anything about the games they will announce. That's why they say things like "we have nothing to say", "we have nothing to announce", or "we aren't developing anything". Just Dance, Sonic, and Dragon Quest are some expections; perhaps they had Nintendo's permission, it was a mistake, or there weren't any clear NDAs yet signed about announcing future multiplatform games.

Even Nintendo is being very secretive with first-party games. We have only seen 5 secondos of 3D Mario, two possible ports of Mario Kart and Splatoon, and the Wii U version of Zelda attached to the teaser video. Skyrim was supposed to be a Switch game, but Bethesda said it was just a video used for the reveal. We don't know if Skyrim is finally coming or not, we don't know yet how does Zelda really look, we don't know what the hell Mario Kart and Splatoon will be (ports or sequels), and I don't even know if that 3D Mario footage is real or not.

But at the same time, all they say could be literally true. There's nothing on the way. I hope this scenario is the least possible.

I will try to wait two months for the presentation, but these 2 months will be very long.

My only hopes for Switch right now are South Park and Persona 5. South Park is coming the same month, and Persona 5 is getting released one month earlier outside Japan, also a portable version of P5 would do well in Japan. I will play them in my PS4 if Switch version never happens, but I will sell my PS4 is they both happen; I prefer Nintendo games than Sony games to be honest.

You guys think that this presentation will feature games beyond the launch period? I have a feeling that we will get maybe 1 big holiday game revealed (3D Mario that was shown), but the rest will be at E3.

Yeah, I do. Unless they will release like 50 games at launch window. I don't expect this to be any shorter than two hours of an event as far as the livestreamed conference goes.

Now I'm wondering if they'll have the Treehouse team at the event to stream the available demos on YouTube and Twitch.

If it runs UE4 finally, it runs Frostbite. You need to get away from that "power" thing and think about "features" which was what held those engines back from Wii U more than anything.

hell-are-you-talking-about.gif

Who said anything about power? I was asking in the context of which EA games we might expect. I'm not even asking if it's possible, I'm asking if it's been done.

I may be reading too much into this, but CD Projekt hasn't straight out denied plans to release Gwent (and The Witcher 3) on Nintendo Switch:

– If we decide to release Gwent or The Witcher 3 on Nintendo Switch, we will inform you with an appropriate press release.

In the past they were quick to deny release of their games on specific platforms. This is worded differently.

I think Gwent's good fit for Switch. I doubt W3 considering its' performance on PS4/XB1 and how they aren't updating it on them anymore.

It seems as though the people are finding into two camps.

1) Nintendo will have decent third party support at launch and it can run Xbone ports.

2) third parties will take a wait and see approach and give minimal support at launch. Switch is unlikely to get many Xbone ports, because there is no market, or it can not run them.

Launch Day Expectations:

Mario (Only if it comes out Mar. 10, which is MARIO Day)

Not to be a broken record at all, but given Miyamoto-san's comments about the next Mario game at E3 earlier this year, I'm not expecting it till Fall. I'd be thrilled to be wrong, though. I guess also I think Eurogamer's comments about the Switch video being delayed in part to get Mario looking as good as possible on the Switch potentially indicates they're not necessarily at the end of development on it yet.

BTW, I'm kind of surprised you expect Retro to be working on a Metroid game. With some of the core MPT team gone and with no Metroid game made there in several years I expected someone else would take the reins of the next Metroid game.

I really don't think that's as big a deal as people make it out to be. Look what I said here:

Likewise, how many really important people left Retro, exactly? Just Mark Pacini and some artists, right? People act like it was such a devastating blow to Retro and now they can't make a new Metroid Prime or whatever, but I think that's silly. Mr. Pacini admitted in an interview that Metroid Prime was essentially a game that came from the east and the west. He literally admitted that if it weren't for Nintendo's guidance, the game wouldn't of turned out nearly as good. It goes to show, just look at the games he was involved with over at Armature, such as Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate or ReCore.

I really don't think they need Mark Pacini or those few other artists that left with him to make a new Metroid Prime game.

Thank you for the clarification! I didn't realize that was the case. What about the alternate argument, though? That Retro hasn't evinced an interest in Metroid for several years (as far as we know, right? Please do correct me if I'm wrong!) and/or that Nintendo may not be keen to revisit this spin-off series since it already has a completed spin-off series and more importantly, what with the double bomba of Other M and Fed Force?

Honestly, if Nintendo's serious about their eSports push (if that rumor is true in the first place), then one would hope that the Smash 4 port is ready for launch. Plus, as mentioned before, it's Nintendo's biggest Amiibo game right now, & they'd likely want to get some Amiibos besides the BotW ones sold alongside the launch of the Switch.

Battlefront, Overwatch, Destiny, For Honor, South Park, Batman Return to Arkham imo
What's so unrealistic about Overwatch and South Park?

Not saying they'll necessarily show up, but both make perfect sense.

If they did port Destiny I wonder if they would use the 360 version?
Why would they do that?

Don't count on TW3, but would be stupid not to port a f2p game that would be awesome to play on the go with a touch screen.

Thanks, bookmarked that interview so the next time i read that incredibly silly argument (which comes out a little too often, the other day i read Emily Rogers writing that) i know what to post them.

Yeah no reason to believe it won't be there d1.

Honestly I think it's better to hold it back a few months. We already have Zelda and most likely Mario Kart 8 coming to launch, that's two Wii U ports. Let those games have some space, and give Sakurai more time to add new stuff.

We really have no idea if Mario Kart is coming at launch. Heck, we technically don't even know if Zelda is.

I'd be very surprised if either of them weren't there. As I said before, Mario Kart appears just to be an extension of Mario Kart 8, which had its development completely wrapped up by early 2015. How much development time could they possibly need?

It's very possible Smash Bros. is in a similar position.

There's really no way of knowing which games are coming at launch. Nintendo holds back finished games all the time for marketing and scheduling reasons.

  • We don't know if Sakurai's even involved with the port (assuming that the port is happening).
  • Tying back into my eSports mention, Nintendo likely wants to replace the Wii U in the competitive community as soon as possible. Hard to do that if they release the Switch version too close to EVO, forcing them to stay on the Wii U. Of course, if that "Nintendo's pushing for eSports" rumor isn't true, disregard this bulletpoint entirely.
  • As mentioned earlier, Smash 4 is still Nintendo's biggest Amiibo-seller. And while yes, there are other Amiibo-compatible games in the Switch's library (MK8, Splatoon, BotW), Smash 4 is still the biggest one of the lot that supports Amiibos (namely due to its large cast).

Technically, Smash for Wii U/3DS was wrapped up earlier this year back in February. I'd imagine the MK8 team had a lot more time on their hands.

In general I'd just imagine Nintendo wanting some sort of popular multi-player game of theirs to be at launch. Maybe it could be Smash, but I'm willing to bet MK8 will be there instead (or maybe both of them?).

People said that from Wii > Wii U as well

But instead Nintendo focused on making 3DS games.

Now I'd hope that whatever CPU is in the 3DS/N3DS is similar to the one in Switch so those games can easily go between them (to the Switch, not vice-versa). Or at the very least, their plan is to not support 3DS after next year.

The major difference is that Nintendo themselves have come out and explained their move combining divisions was explicitly to avoid the above problem- software shortages due to supporting two platforms. I agree we may see some 3DS->Switch ports (like Mario Sports- that had very high quality assets for a 3DS game, it should look amazing in HD) and also that 3DS support in general will be winding down massively. Nintendo's talk about the Switch not "replacing" the 3DS is basically marketing for, "please buy stuff this November!"

But really, the big thing to me is that third parties are still not allowed to "officially" announce Switch games they are working on. I mean, Skyrim Remastered was in the trailer, and Bethesda is on the confirmed developers list- that game is obviously coming. But they aren't able to officially confirm it. Same with NBA 2k7. Why?

Because Nintendo wants to have as many games as possible for their January blowout- both first and third party. The more games they have, the more confidence consumers have, the more hype enthusiasts (like us) have. It's clear that their strategy is to drop as much as possible all at once.

I actually think MK has a better chance of showing up at launch as well. My point though is that we really don't know, as nothing has been confirmed.

Is it bad I'm scared they might frontload launch a bit too much, and I won't have time to play all the games I want to? I mean, Zelda alone feels like it'll be a huge time investment, and I don't have the free time I used to.

It's a sad launch game TBH. Wii U remasters as launch games are as sad stuff in general. Zelda is the exception since that's the launch date for the game anyways I guess.

I'm hoping the launch is a bit lighter than normal and Nintendo instead spreads out their releases evenly throughout the year. I don't want to see a three or four month drought right after release day.

I have no problem with one Wii U remaster at launch. Any more though and I think it could hurt early perception of the system a bit.

I doubt they well--unless you didn't have a Wii U anyway. They need Zelda to sell, so I'm guessing it will mostly just be that, plus some combo of Mario Kart/Splatoon/Smash ports/enhanced editions/maybe sequel (but I doubt it) for Splatoon.

I mean, I'm sure this is mostly true, but I still see at least a few other major titles at launch that are new just for diversity

There absolutely will be more from Nintendo on day one. It's quite possible we'll get a new IP, as Nintendo has done so with every new-gen hardware launch since Wii.
